I spend some time in 2023 in Morocco, mostly Casablanca, but including visits to the capital Rabat, Marrakesh, and the edges of the Sahara Desert.

This is the Third World! People are notably less well off than in Turkey or the Balkans. Heavy dieselpunk vibes… small mechanics shops fixing motorcycles are prevalent. Moroccans are polyglots; knowledge of French is near universal (amusing detail: all the literature and science books are in French, while Arabic seems reserved for religious topics), and many have a working knowledge of English or Spanish. (This is very much not the case in Honduras). The food is cheap and delicious, though I am not a huge fan of couscous.

Downsides: Still a poor Islamic country. Crime is low, but the souks are known to be packed with grifters who “help” you with directions and then cajole you into buying things you don’t need. It’s dirty. Much of the prime Casablanca beachfront is a dump. Not even the limited EHC community that Turkey has in Istanbul.

Casablanca is probably the most interesting and dynamic city. Marrakesh is a tourist haven that will get old fast if you stay; also the least developed otherwise. Rabat is clean, modern, and relatively rich; I assume on account of its status as the capital and national bourgeoisie linked to the state.
