Guardian: Ukraine president offers Russians citizenship in snub to Putin
Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the comedian who last week won Ukraine’s presidential election, has dismissed an offer by Vladimir Putin to provide passports to Ukrainians and pledged instead to grant citizenship to Russians who “suffer” under the Kremlin’s rule.
I take back everything bad I ever wrote about Zelensky – not when it emerges that he is my faithful reader!
Ukraine needs to make a powerful countermove. Give Ukrainian citizenship to all Russians!
— Anatoly Karlin (@powerfultakes) April 27, 2019
I strongly approve of the Ukraine giving out passports to Russians. No oppressed Russian should be denied the opportunity to participate in Ukraine’s vibrant democracy.
Having proven their democratic and freedom-loving credentials by willingly assuming Ukrainian citizenship, the Ukraine must then also take the requisite steps to allow them to easily vote in Ukrainian elections. They must open polling stations in Russia to service their new loyal citizens.
As a long-suffering political victim of the Putler regime, I am willing to take up the duties of Ukrainian citizenship and so are millions of other Russian nationalists!

Glad to hear it – can’t wait to see your latest photo dressed in a vishivanka. I didn’t know that you were somehow living in ‘victimhood’ in Russia – time to recalibrate – for sure! 🙂
Since when is it multilateral, eh? What Putler wants, Putler does, fresh (((khokhol))) clown unheeded.
^_^
I’d love to actually know how many people in positions of influence in science/media/business/politics read this blog. It would not surprise me if there are a considerable number.
ROFL
I’ll give my good friend Anatoly Karlin some credit here…..but he should not get too carried away because Zelensky for his latest response to Putin may well have also read
Karlin’s ridiculous wailing about the perfectly normal Article 282 law when coming out with the idiotic standard liberast garbage of Russia not being a “free country”and that somehow Ukraine is one!

OK, I had to look that one up.
LOFL. He must get his chutzpah from his Israeli citizenship.
Do the Hungarians know about this?
Does this apply to Chechens and other Churki?
There is this long-held belief in AR that Stephen Miller at the very least listens to Fash the Nation.
Last time I checked, the Ukraine still bans Russian men from entering the country “to stop private armies from forming”. So, you wouldn’t be able to get your Ukrainian passport even if you tried. 🙂
Putin fully approved Zelensky’s initiative

This is a good move by Zelensky, I think. He could have gone for some heavy-handed call to arms à la Poroshenko but opted for a message of cheer. The one fly in the ointment is his wording in this passage, which reads unnervingly like a resolution by the UN Human Rights Council

Yes, he said in effect that Z.’s idea “sounds good”. For if all Russians and all Ukrainians are citizens of both, then … “We’ll be stronger and more successful.” https://www.rt.com/news/457820-putin-zelensky-passport-sparring/
Trolling war is escalanting. I bet on Putler.
He did reply with a cowardly Poroshenko-style move: demand that Western countries come to the rescue and escalate sanctions against Russia. By which I lost all respect for him and abandon any hope of a significant change of the situation.
Why does the rest of world need to suffer the consequences of the collapse of the USSR having led to the creation of dysfunctional countries with largely artificial boundaries? How is that our matter? Will we be stupid enough to continue escalating tensions with a nuclear superpower just to make sure that the Russo-phones stranded in neighboring countries after that collapse do not even get the chance of having a simplified procedure to get a Russian passport?
Then again, Kiev regime controlled Ukraine has already been a host to several Russian “dissidents” (traitors).
Furious libertards still crying.

Nobody takes Akarlin seriously on RuNet anyways.
Indeed the Ukrainian Bershidskys would not be the ones to benefit from a Russian passport, but the millions of Ukrainians working in Russia and having to go back and forth across the border every few months to avoid deportation— they would certainly benefit.
Yet more evidence of how out of touch Bershidsky is.
Sure, but that’s a very mild response by Ukrainian standards. And Russia already imposes sanctions on Ukraine, of course. Including very recent ones. I will wait and see a bit longer before passing judgement.
Yes, but that’s a good thing, don’t you think? As long as they aren’t actual fugitives, of course.
If Ukraine joins the EU, then millions of millions of people would rationally want to apply for Ukrainian citizenship (of course, in such an unlikely scenario, the EU probably would condition giving EU membership to Ukraine ⇔ Ukraine is not giving easier citizenship to random people in Russia).
But as long as Ukraine is outside of the EU, then there is little motivation for ordinary people – whether in Russia, or even for citizens of many third-world or African countries – would want to apply for Ukrainian citizenship (unless you want to escape from police in Russia – in which case, Ukraine can “benefit” from escaping criminals).
Intended figuratively, not literally – not sure if the phrase is only used literally in English.
Putin’s policy when it comes to the near abroad has been retarted. Why not let Russians(or all native inhabtants for that matter because I bet any Estonian or Latvian who wants Russian citzenship would be pro Russia) in the Baltics have dual citizenship? I bet tons of Russians living in Estonia and Latvia don’t get citzenship because they don’t want to lose thire Russian citzenship. That is theortically almost 1/3rd of the population in those countries.
