Open Thread 135: A Dozen Years of Blogging

Jan 9, 2020 marks the 12th year since I began blogging about Russia in 2008, before expanding into broader geopolitical topics, HBD, and futurism within that same year.

Here is a graph of my pageviews across my websites during this period.

(I did not plot visits to my personal webpages akarlin.com and akarlin.ru for 2019-20 since they have largely been inactive legacy archives ever since I moved to UR in 2015, with diminishing numbers of pageviews over the years).

Since the sharp upwards spike of 2018, viewership has stalled, though it hides significant quarterly dips and rises, as you can see from this graph broken down by month:

I was highly preoccupied with personal/work-related matters in late 2019, hence the slump in the second half. Conversely, I was able to be much more productive this year, generating a record 381 posts. This should have translated into a record amount of visits and page views given The Unz Review’s expansion over the past few years, my own increasing profile (e.g. Twitter followers have doubled to 8,600 over the past two years, despite repeated purges) and the large amount of big habbenings this year.

But this was not to be. Google took strong exception to this site in mid-2020 and deranked it in Google searches. Google is a near monopolist in the Anglosphere search market, so that made me virtually invisible so far as search engine “discovery” went. Facebook banned us from the entire platform, making it impossible to share unz.com links even in private messages, as well as deleting all past posts and comments containing them. Considering my accurate and timely coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, it is likely that Sundar Pichai and Mark Zuckerberg have blood on their hands in so far as their interference meant that fewer people, including potential policy-makers, were denied viewership of these posts.

Anyhow, with Google searches and Facebook accounting for about 30% and 10% of my traffic, respectively, what should have been more than 2 million views this year resulted in only 1.5 million instead:

Items PWords Comms CWords Visits Views
2008 70 139,021 304 37,218
2009 72 254,052 867 152,868
2010 81 209,939 1,594 200,483
2011 75 152,706 3,159 406,353
2012 172 153,634 5,164 662,995
2013 167 132,173 1,986 259,421
2014 5 5,154 1,023 147,549
2015 130 156,592 5,504 664,553 128,326 382,574
2016 128 120,956 6,204 597,092 188,570 493,156
2017 262 190,137 17,326 1,808,417 237,477 791,675
2018 341 270,456 56,996 5,721,653 381,300 1,408,092
2019 284 244,409 40,200 4,198,868 336,314 1,221,668
2020 381 184,646 44,573 4,539,035 301,716 1,510,135

On a month to month basis, the decline in the second half was partially disguised by general intensified politicization surrounding BLM and the US elections. But unless there are many more powerful habbenings this year, this factor will recede into the background, while the restrictions from Google and Facebook will, presumably, stay on – and may be joined by additional ones from Twitter, which is now on a banning spree against pundits of both Right and Left that are not aligned with the woke neoliberal elite consensus.

As such, I do not expect any gains in viewership in 2021 for a fourth year running, though I don’t really expect significant losses either on account of continued organic growth.

Top Posts in 2020

This year did not really see individual “seminal” longreads along the lines of Katechon Hypothesis and The Geography of the Noosphere, though overall I think I did a good job accurately covering this year’s main developments.

(1) Corona:

No need for further commentary, since I devoted what is probably my single longest post this year to it.

Bad outcomes. Lucked out with vaccines. Needn’t have been so. Proof of “politics is the mindkiller.”

Curated list here: https://akarlin.com/archive/#CoronavirusCOVID-19

(2) BLM:

Most #BLM demands are based on lies… toxic lies that constitute long-term threats to the civilizational viability of not just the US but it’s vassal states.

Silver lining is that the US has been giving us ample cause to “socially distance” from them, both in summer and much more recently.

(3) Minsk Maidan

Predicted that Lukashenko would probably stay in power – but that this would not be an unambiguous boon for Russia, since Luka wants to hang onto power (being potato dictator of BSSR is cooler than retirement in Rostov). This has all played out as expected.

However, Russia cannot expect accomodation with the opposition – at least its dominant Tikhanovskaya wing. Their secret program was ultra-zmagarist form the start and I was the first to cover that in English.

(4) Karabakh War 2020

This graph should be recognizable to regulars by now. God favors the side with the drones, not the one with the democratists. Who would have thought.

(5) Notable Russia posts:

(6) Other posts:

(7) Quite a few “rare”/niche obituaries, thanks in part – certainly so in the case of Avdeev, possibly so in the case of Krylov – thanks to Corona-chan.

In other news, I also co-authored a couple of psychometrics-related papers:

You can download them via Sci-Hub. I explain how to use Sci-Hub (and other useful piracy tools) here: https://akarlin.com/piracy-guide/

I will try to blog soon about the second paper.

My classic article, probably my most read one ever – The Idiocy of the Average – was very kindly translated into Russian by Mikhail Lebedev. I also updated my classic Sputnik & Pogrom article on Russian IQ with new PISA data for Ukraine and Belarus, as well as military testing data for Russian regions.

Looking Forwards to 2021

I will start off with an extended organizational note on how to follow me and will finish up with my blogging plans for this year.

(1) FOLLOWING BLOG

  • You can follow me directly from The Unz Review front page (though only my three latest posts are displayed), or this archive link.
  • Front page of my personal website automatically has new posts:  https://akarlin.com/
  • I repost most of my posts on Twitter (@akarlin88), the last major social network on which I remain active.

I don’t know how long I will survive on Twitter – after Facebook/Google, and a shadowban this summer, I gave my survival this year even chances. I am perhaps no longer as squarely in Jack’s crosshairs – the current wave of purges are targeting Qanon and the more “agitated” boomercons – but the overall level of censorship is likewise much higher, to the extent that NRx blogger spandrell is predicting that the Western social media sphere will go the way of China’s Weibo (i.e. with politicals purged, it becomes an apolitical platform for celebrities, hobbyists, corporate PR teams, etc).

For reasons I will go into in another post, there is limited utility to “getting on Gab” and the like. So, if it happens, I will likely vanish from Western social media (apart from a small private account on Twitter for observation purposes).

Despite the simplicity of the underlying idea – it’s really just an integrated blogging platform + mailing list + Patreon – Substack has driven a small renaissance in blogging from the second half of the year. So much so, that I will post a much needed update to my “blogroll” in the next few days. I will not be “blogging” there, but I do intend to use it to send (very) occasional important updates for those of you who are interested in keeping tabs on my work without checking in here often.

  • Use a blog reader such as Feedly or The Old Reader.

Pretty remarkable that, for all people’s complaints about the toxicity of social media, one of the simplest and most customizable been relegated to the sidelines. I am talking about the humble blog reader, which seems to have gone near extinct when Google nuked its Google Reader in 2013. But plenty of good alternatives exist – personally, I use Feedly, though I know that many people prefer Old Reader. If there are many significant numbers of individual blogs or columnists that you follow, a blog reader is extremely useful. I am happy that Substack is compatible with them.

  • My other social media sites:
    • YouTube – largely dormant, but I do aggregate podcasts/interviews I do (mostly they’re in Russian).
    • VK – largely dormant
  • As per above, I largely stopped using Facebook after they banned me from posting my own articles.
  • My Russian language website is at akarlin.ru

(2) REFERENCE MATERIALS

One issue that people have raised with me is how to best “introduce” me to new followers or access some article of mine deep in the Unz Review archives. This is explained in the sidebar of my blog and individual posts (below this photo of me in Nizhny Novgorod), but since it’s quite deep on any given page, many people understandably don’t notice it.

So I’ll take the opportunity to clarify how to navigate my past work/archives:

  • Best/current “intro” to my work can be accessed through my personal website akarlin.com – the front page is pretty intuitive, with hyperlinks to all relevant pages of interest.
    • In particular, “Start Here” for the short intro: https://akarlin.com/start/
    • Thematic archive of my posts here: https://akarlin.com/archive/
  • The website also has a pretty comprehensive (and growing) links to my book/film/video game reviews; travel accounts and travel guides; and various other things that I occasionally update.
  • While Google has deranked my blog on The Unz Review, it obviously did not do the same to the flattering RationalWiki article about me. Wrt those for whom this is an issue – my response to it is here: https://akarlin.com/ratwiki/

(3) DONATIONS

I get an income stream from the very generous Ron Unz, so while I do appreciate reader donations, they are not currently necessary for me to keep writing and keep said writing freely available. This is a privilege, and one that many “public intellectuals” don’t enjoy. Furthermore, I am not poor by Russian standards, and I don’t want to feel like I’m exploiting my readers like some BLM or MAGA grifter. So again, please don’t feel obliged to contribute if you’re struggling yourself. In fact, I’d rather you not.

However, if you are substantially moneyed, and derive enjoyment, satisfaction, intellectual stimulation, or indeed monetary benefits from my blogging – e.g., my forewarnings on the global crash last February, or the advice to not bet on Trump or the Republicans in Georgia – then I do give you license to imagine me tipping a piggy bank towards you:

  1. Sponsor me on Patreon
  2. Bitcoin: 17tDufZUEK3DvQh3rY75F3xtVgxj4TzdtB
  3. Paypal donation
  4. Yandex Money via Yasobe (for ruble accounts)

This list of donation methods is kept updated on the sidebar, and on this page: https://akarlin.com/donations/

(4) PLANS FOR 2021

I have had an unfortunate habit of overpromising and under fulfilling in previous years, so I am going to tone down on my ambitions this time round, trading caution for completion:

  • Finish my long-promised book about Russia.
  • Maintain UR blog viewership at 1.5M (this will be an achievement in the context of Google/Facebook censorship cutting traffic by 40% relative to what it would be otherwise, not to mention crimping rate of potential growth).
  • Two papers, again (including a repackaging of Katechon Hypothesis into a journal).
  • List of essays that I commit to doing:
    • The long-promised Great Bifurcation (by January 25).
    • The equally long-promised impression of my Poland travels. (Hey, it also took me about a year to get round to writing up Romania).
    • Longread on US politics/society.
    • Translation of my Russian-language longread on Russian IQ (i.e. what I am most famous for in the Russosphere).

One thing I’ve seen mentioned on twitter recently that I don’t think you touched up on in your coverage is the idea that the US has prior knowledge that Azerbaijan would invade and tacitly supported it because of the gas pipeline(not sure why this would matter since it doesn’t go through the disputed area). Do you agree with that?

There’s something poetic about rightoids being banned in massive numbers off social media platforms after being bootlickers of neoliberal oligarchs for years.

Trump himself was a zealous defender of tech monopolies abroad. He was often bullying countries like India to open their markets wider and wider to help these firms. And now they backstabbed him. Such is the fate of rightoids! To be clear, I don’t support the censorship.

There’s tons of hot air about “civil war” but this misdiagnoses the true psychological profile of your garden variety rightoid: he is a rule-follower authoritarian (with a small a). Such people are incapable of rebelling because their instinct is to “be normal” (i.e. to conform to the status quo).

There’s been a steady stream of censorship over the past few years, but what have rightoids done? They have pleaded with the censors that they are not the extremists, only those to their right out, out of sheer cowardice. By contrast, there’s been much more support for those censored on the left by the left. And yes, censorship on the left is a real issue. It just doesn’t get as much attention in the popular consciousness.

That is why nobody respects rightoids, not even rightoids themselves. This time won’t be different. They will crawl back into the tent, meekly whining like they always do but doing nothing.

China’s next-gen J-20 stealth fighter jettisons Russian engine in favour of home-grown technology

A military insider told the South China Morning Post Chinese aircraft engineers found their domestically built WS-10C, the modified version of the WS-10 engine, to be as good as the Russian AL-31F engines.

“It’s impossible for China to rely on the Russian engine, because Russia asked China to purchase more Su-35 fighter jets in exchange for the AL-31F engine deals,” the insider, who requested anonymity, said.

“The key problem is – except for its longer combat range advantage – the radar, navigation system and other electronic components on the Su-35s are inferior to Chinese aircraft like the J-16 strike fighter.”

Yikes. The Chinese seem to be unhappy with the Comac deal as well.

  10. Is Corona deaths actually going down now in Russia? New cases and deaths are falling since late december according to the official data. It would be disastrous if the excess mortality of October and November continued several months into 2021.

  11. I wonder how much of the components of the J-16 are Western. China probably buys a lot of technology through front companies in third countries.

  12. Thanks for all your hard work, AK.

  13. Shortsword says

At best it contains Chinese derivatives of Western technology. But it’s just a Chinese Flanker variation so more likely Chinese derivatives of Russian technology made from reverse engineering their Russian Flankers.

  17. Europe Europa says

The decline of Western societies into leftist, anti-white shitholes seems to correlate closely with increasing enfranchisement of women over the decades. It’s a factor often overlooked by both sides I think. Women don’t seem to care about matters such as nation and immigration, in fact most of the people I hear screeching “racist!” at anything even vaguely civic nationalist seem to be big mouth women.

A lot of women especially feminists (which most Western women identify as) are also brainwashed into thinking it’s in their interests to be in solidarity with third world immigrants and LGBT. I think it’s clear that the more female Western parliaments become, the less things like anti-mass immigration and conservatism are going to matter or be a relevant part of the decision making process.

It’s interesting that the two most conservative white countries, Russia and Hungary, also have a low percentage of female politicians by European standards.

I’m warning Trump tards that trying to save the US Empire and behaving like rabid dogs will only lead to their destruction. Making yourself hated everywhere and by everyone, at home and abroad, will only fasten your demise.

You will have to learn to cooperate with others and give up on imperial dreams or you will be destroyed.

  21. RadicalCenter says

What do Karlin’s blog and the Russian economy have in common? Americans aren’t in much position to mock either one.

(Even if he is wrong about the lethality of the COVID-19 virus and the propriety of a police state in response)

  22. Trump himself was a zealous defender of tech monopolies abroad.

Trump bullied France too, on taxes for tech giants. He did that in the context of saving the US Empire and its tech giants.

Basically US rightoids got triggerd massively that “we no longer have the biggest dick”, “we are no longer number 1” and started going crazy trying to save the US Empire, that will eat them later.

They have really animalistic thinking of the type of “Murica! We have the biggest dick!”

If they do not come back to their senses and start cooperating with others, they will be destroyed.

  23. RadicalCenter says

Good point, Europa. Women seem to be disproportionately represented among people who refuse to think about the COVID-19 virus’s actual lethality, and about what a proportionate response that does not result in mass poverty and a police state would look like.

I have now been screamed and cursed at once for not wearing a mask on a bus, in LA last summer. The hysteric was a woman (roughly speaking, as she weighed more than I).

Yesterday I walked to a grocery store in New Jersey. My son and I were wearing masks but not covering our noses. A woman glared and followed us and then physically got in our way of our cart. When she got our attention, she “ordered” me “cover your damn nose or I’ll call the police.” I responded, not too politely, with an inquiry about her epidemiological expertise, and asked whether she had read the World Health Org’s statement last year that masks should not be worn except if sick or treating sick people. She kept glaring and threatening to call the police. I said “I’ll take that as a no, but thanks for sharing your vast knowledge. Plus, you weren’t standing six feet away from us, which really really frightens me. Now mind your f——g business.” She did call security and we ended up walking right by her and them on the way to pay. Security did nothing, but I wouldn’t count on that always being the case given the hysteria and ignorance that prevail.

Of course, to be fair, it’s not only women who are hysterics and bullies. Plenty of men seem to think that destroying normal life and erecting a police state is a suitable response to the virus — especially, I’ve noticed, men who don’t have a small business, an offline job, or children being harmed by the lockdown.

  24. Supply and Demand says

Well, in a rare case of female morality, she did the right thing. That woman clearly is more willing and able to uphold polite white society than you and your son are, considering you both were wearing your masks like negroes.

  25. On masks, i will give you a friendly advice again – salt your masks, especially if they are surgical masks. 3 studies now confirm that salting masks increases filtration efficiency and creates a self-disinfecting mask, killing the microorganisms falling on it. Salt coating is viable for at least 15 days.

The inventors received award in Canada.

Use 60 gr salt, 200 gr hot water, good mixing of solution, 2 hours bath per mask, overnight drying.

I look forward to reading your take on the Great Bifurcation and the Katechon hypothesis. From my point of view your Katechon hypothesis is of outstanding interest.

Some vaccines are worth getting, some are not, based on an assessment of the gravity of the disease in question and the apparent likelihood and severity of side effects. By the way, it doesn’t exactly inspire confidence when legislators shield the corporations making the vaccines from liability.

Whatever Nazis or Soviets or any other unpopular or evil groups thought about some vaccine, or vaccines generally, sheds no light on our current issue: should people be forced to get this vaccine? I say no, I would not force people to get it, whatever our family ultimately decides about getting one of these new vaccines.

More broadly, we wouldn’t be wise to rely on the state of scientific understanding eighty years ago in making decisions about which vaccines to approve, which vaccines to mandate, and which vaccines to voluntarily take.

  34. Bashibuzuk says

Well this whole Corona Chan topic is far from being simple. A lot of ramifications. It is hard to find a balanced stance. There are arguments for both the lockdowns and against them. Anyway, I believe the coronavirus crisis is not a matter of public health, it is more of a tool for massive social engineering.

  35. So, the implication of this is to say that white people originated in India.

And that these white people then spread from India to everywhere else.

Isn’t this what the Hindu Nationalists are saying?

  36. I think the point is that people have been historically afraid to get vaccines because vaccines are centrally planned and administered.

So how much you trust the vaccine depends on how much you trust your own government.

The worst people in the world, the George Soros types, I’m sure have thought of using vaccines in one way or another to advance their nefarious schemes.

There was a big scandal in Germany where the elites got different sets of vaccines than the common folk. The elite vaccines apparently did not have preservatives.

  37. At this point, there are hospitals that are already getting their 2nd vaccine dose.

So what do the stats at these hospitals tell us? Are infection rates from hospitals employees dropping dramatically?

This seems to be the best way to see if the vaccine will actually have an effect on the population as a whole but I haven’t seen any discussion on this.

  38. I won’t post anything here, but seems that if you joined Parler, the Feds have EVERYTHING. I am not exaggerating — hackers have scraped pretty much everything from the site, including deleted posts. This is all going to the FBI.

    😉

Seriously though, it looks like there’s competition between Biden-Sobol axis and Merkel-Navalny axis.

Germany disapproved of Twitter ban of Trump similar to Navalny, and Merkel is far from Trump fangirl.

  40. India faces two tests, currently:

The first is that farming is shrinking as a percentage of GDP, weakening Indians’ ties to the land.

The second is that the world’s most powerful and fawned upon Indian will soon be a half-negress (daughter of a single mom) and a whore who slept her way to the top, thus setting an example for the worst class of women. Probably some will have ten different children with ten different Africans, in the hope that one will be a Kamala or Obama.

  41. I find Sobol more attractive than Navalny. She looks like a genuine “bitchy eyeglass wearing blondie”.

That would certainly increase the revolutionary zeal of Russian opposition.

  42. Daniel Chieh says

    You have just noticed?

  43. Seems to me the key to mitigating a lot of the excesses of modern liberalism would be to formalize and thus regulate the new liberal religion of worshiping blacks.

What would be better? A daily but short ritual, like two-minutes-negrophilia (from 1984)? Or an annual but longer 24 hr no-holds-barred event, like “the Festival” (from Return of the Archons, Star Trek TOS)?

Or is there a golden mean? Making it a weekly sabbath where progressives would have to go into the inner city and lick the boots of blacks and hand over all their money, and unlock their iphones?

  44. Russia, SK, etc. must form anti-poz censorship boards for the protection of their youth, and they should adopt this wise old proverb as their motto:

A tune is more lasting than the song of the birds, and a word more lasting than the wealth of the world.

  45. Why cannot you accept your ancient, proto-Slav DNA, like the rest of us?

  46. Bashibuzuk says

Looks like there might indeed be an Impeachment against Trump before the Biden / Harris inauguration.

It had much more influence on the Scandinavian and Baltic gene-pool than the Varangian Rus had on the gene-pool of modern Russians.

Apparently the songs are popular Russian pop songs from 2020 translated into Italian. Anyways, enjoy.

He says that if you want to be really anonymous, you have to use a burner simcard, never log into your Apple or Google account, and use your telephone in places where you don’t normally go. Also he says that Telegram is better, but the author of the blog says no messenger service is secure and that you have to choose which government reads your messages. He also predicts that censorship will accelerate after Biden is in power and no one is going to care about Russian laws fining youtube if they censor Russian content if they don’t care about that stuff in the USA. Also, Facebook can be banned easily in Russia, but not youtube apparently, for which no good alternatives exist.

But of course they will not do it. I have already seen some Republicans in my state arguing that unregulated speech platforms could be worse than what we have. They are losers and thus deserve to keep losing.

Speaking of which, did anyone really think that a slim Republican majority in the Senate would prevent an amnesty or a new green “deal”? Or that the final versions of these that we are going to get will be substantially different from the ones we would have with a Senate led by McConnell, Toomey, Romney et al? Come on.

You only have to look at how England is run and how the elites have flooded England with third world immigrants for decades to dispel any illusion that England is some sort of Israel. The reality is the English are probably the most deracinated white ethnicity there is, far from Jewish ethno-centrism.

The “Eternal Anglo” meme seems like typical case of Jewish misinformation and misdirection in reality, I’m sure it’s very beneficial for them to have their stereotypical negative characteristics transposed onto English people.

People of Telegram, is it a usable alternative to Twitter? What channels do you recommend?

  89. The problem with English is that it has been thoroughly pozzed. Does this represent some special weakness of the language, or can it be reduced to historical factors? Such as the industrial revolution, emancipation of the Jews, or the foundation of America. Regardless…

It seems to me that there are only three options:
1.) burn out the poz with heavy censorship and other mechanisms, such as exiling the top 5% of pozzed people to Africa
2.) gradually get the pozzed to speak another dialect, by paying influencers to introduce new words, and drop old ones, then transform the dialect into another language, so they have no purchase on civilized society
3.) create a language that is grammatically immune to poz. (Though I am not sure how to do it.) I’d guess gendered nouns and clever ideograms might be a start. Ideograms have their weaknesses – they make literacy difficult. Maybe, that’s a strength? But if people were smarter maybe it would not matter. I have read that the Chinese ideogram for trouble derives from two women under one roof.

I think there is a larger historical context for behavior on the right. When you describe lack of support for the censored on the right, this is part of another trend: During the post WW2 era, there has been a complete separation between the far right and establishment conservatism. On the left that was not the case to the same extent. Social democratic parties were influenced by, and in different ways, pressured by, Communists and other fellow travelers. This was true even while the mainstream parties had to prove their anti-Communist credentials etc. In academia new fusions of liberalism and Communism(using both labels loosely) emerged. But on the right the tendency has been almost the opposite, in hostile circumstances conservatives have to prove that they’re not secretly Nazis and far right ideas really have no place at all in academia. I don’t believe only right wing psychological profiles can explain this state of affairs, incentives must also play a role.

Why did you repost the same whataboutery again?

The general idea Europe Europa put forward was that there is a close correlation between rising political power and activism of women and the rise of progressivism, identity politics, mass immigration and demographic change in favour of non-white groups in Western countries. Secondarily, that women seem to constitute some of the most doctrinaire and intense SJWs. The conclusion was that if this correlation holds up over time anti-immigration and conservatism in general will be increasingly marginalised in politics.

The existence of this correlation, and any potential causal effects, is not dependent on women occupying all (or even a majority) of the top political positions in Western countries. Or on how sexually successful anyone who notices the correlation is with women.

Another poster has already mentioned that up until the 1960s and the invention of the pill women tended to be more conservative and more religious than men.

  104. They do literally tend to inbreed but I used to see a reasonable number of slim ones, especially little Bengali women. They may have grown in size as they got older.

Currently life is better economically and socially, in Russia than in most European countries, as there is a lack of lockdown policies.

There is a prioritization of the economy and political popularity, over anti-pandemic measures. But if you compare to just a very months ago, there is no logical coherency.

For example, the church has probably the oldest participating “fangroup”, which is to say the people who are vulnerable from coronavirus and should stay inside until vaccinated. Yet in Christmas this month, the churched allowed old parishioners indoors for services (and this is not some hi-tech building with HEPA filters installed – old parishioners are breathing the same air as each other over hours).

I agree with a lot of this, but I also have some quibbles. While I would historically buy your analysis, I think this dynamic has changed in recent years. Certainly, the anti-war left which was still active during the Bush era all but collapsed during the Obama years.

Really, since BLM took hold, we’ve seen the rise of a “radlib” culture that puts a major premium on identity issues over class/economic interests and the traditional anti-imperialist focus on the left.

What shocked me was when even Jacobin magainze (!) supported some of the coups in Latin America lately, or at least sought to deflect blame from US imperialist meddling. Antifa has become the enforcers of the neoliberal oligarchy, whether they accept that or not.

There is some pushback occuring, primarily by the likes of Max Blumenthal and the folks at the Grayzone. Hell, even civil libertarians like Glenn Greenwald is adding to the fire by attacking the democrats for being blindly obedient to the CIA. But these voices are still very marginal and under harsh attacks. Glenn has, amusingly for a Jewish man, been routinely accused of being a white supremacist and a fascist. That should tell you a lot about the tone of the debate.

The neoliberal oligarchy has understood that identity politics works on the left just as effectively as it does on the right. White working-class rightoids are willing to make stupid alliances with self-promoting blowhards like Trump, motivated by petty racism in many cases. Aspiring white middle-class radlibs are willing to throw away any pretention of economic justice as they get ginned up by the media to fight against an imminent “fascist takeover”.

It’s a very cynical, but also highly clever, game that they are playing. And the plebs on both sides of the aisle are falling for it, hook, line and sinker.

P.S. While many in universities are marxists, they quickly tend to abandon those ideas once they leave because there’s no incentives for it in the work force. This also shows that the much-hyped “marxist infiltration” that rightoids harp about is the typical rigthoid bloviating nonsense. It has very little real-life consequences. The social policies pushed is not by marxists but by neoliberals. But rightoids are too stupid to understand that.

    Ithkuil, http://www.ithkuil.net

    AUI, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/AUI_(constructed_language)

In the near future, at least — because it becomes even harder to predict or “guesstimate” the farther into the future we look — a simplified version of English seems more likely. Specifically, we would spell words the way they sound and stop having two sets of rules on how to spell, pronounce, decline, and conjugate words. We would correct for the fact that our language’s vocabulary and rules come from two different language groups, Germanic and Latinate (through Norman pre-French or whatever it is called).

Spanish is not out of the question. It could become at least as widely known and used as English in the USA, certainly in most of the (temporarily) independent statelets that may secede or emerge from our four most populous States (particularly #1 California and #2 Texas, but also #3 Florida and #4 New York).

On the other hand, the USA is likely to decline in absolute terms economically, militarily, and culturally, not just relative to other major powers and cultures, and possibly outright collapse. In such a scenario it would ostensibly be less important which languages people speak here. Moreover, is there any substantial sustained immigration of Spanish-speakers into Europe or some other continent outside the Americas? If not, it would be harder for Spanish to take hold as a lingua franca.

Mandarin is not a good candidate. Most of our children are learning it, but there is a reason why we were advised by native-speakers that it is especially important to learn Mandarin at a really young age. The intentional emphasis towards ‘progressivism’ in West has been engineered, funded and deployed for decades now by mostly males. Sure, there have been plenty of useful idiot females (and males) recruited to assist the cause but, only a deeply in-denial person doesn’t grasp where the power resides in that massive effort.

Take the psychotic old men at the helm out of the equation and the problem goes away.

Glad to hear it, and good for Russians. That is another reason why it seems tempting to apply for residency in Russia, as difficult as the adjustment would be for an American of my age.

Presumably Russia doesn’t share the US delusion that they can ruthlessly crush economic and social activity for a prolonged period and make up for the loss of jobs and tax revenue by simply printing-and-borrowing their way through the “pandemic.” They can’t rack up massive debt with (temporary) impunity, because they don’t have the world’s reserve currency (nor will the US, soon enough, but that is a topic for another day).

As for Russia’s approach to the exaggerated “pandemic” lacking “logical coherence” or consistency over time: there is nothing wrong with ceasing to do what one never should have done in the first place. I pray that Russians have the sense and principle not to lockdown again, and that our rulers here in the USA can be made to end our lockdowns (dubious).

I’ve read claims that Mandarin is gradually losing its tonal system, due largely to the number of polysyllabic words that have no homophones so therefore no practical need for the tonal system.

Apparently the actual number of true homophones in Mandarin is not that high, which is why the “ma1 ma2 ma3 ma4” example gets used all the time. I’ve also read that there are regional dialects of Mandarin that only distinguish three or even two tones.

Perhaps creating a sort of global lingua franca version of Mandarin without the tonal system that is easy for non-natives to learn is not that far-fetched an idea?

  129. We don’t always agree on things but that was an excellent post.

White working-class rightoids are willing to make stupid alliances with self-promoting blowhards like Trump, motivated by petty racism in many cases.

In my experience, affluent liberals are smarter about their petty racism. Instead of yelling “Boo Mexican rapists!” at the top of their lungs, liberals demand “Good Schools”, and high taxes. Nothing cleanses your neighborhood from blacks and other poor minorities like high property taxes that fund your school district.

Anyway, white working class rightoids have serious problems right now. They are getting culled by opioid overdoses and thats not good. BLM-antifa white liberals may burn down black neighborhoods (damages from the summer riots run in the $billions last I saw), but at least culturally, corporate oligarchy made blacks and minorities into token champions. So thats something. White poors have nothing to look forward to, hence the drug deaths.

Well we can’t have that right now because we need to grow nominal GDP and inflation in order to stabilize debt to GDP ratio and that means we need those rightoids in Walmart buying stuff. They can’t shop if they are dead. While they are not the brightest light bulbs out there, beggars can’t be choosers and all that. Their complaints about life passing them by are not unfounded, and we need to do something about that, at least so they stop dropping dead and do their duty and help maintain consumption growth.

Agree with all of this, with the quibble that there’s no reason that a Jewish person can’t support a fascist economic/social system. Not Greenwald, but an ethnic or religious Jew could be a fascist.

Moreover, millions of Jews appear to be racial supremacists; it’s just that think that their own race(s) — for the Ashkenazim, an often roughly equal mix of white European (mostly Italian) and Semitic/“middle eastern”, whether they admit it or not, and straight up Semitic for the Sepphardim — is favored or should rule others rather than Europeans doing so.

Liberals should also be required to make Hajj to Lagos, where they will circle Ajegunle, Nigeria’s biggest slum, seven times, in a counter-clockwise direction, while chanting “black is beautiful.” They shall also have to drink from the river that runs through it, and complete sundry other rituals, such as picking up seven metric tons of garbage from the streets, and trying to sort it in order to recycle it.

You board the invasion ships first; in stormy weather, I understand the journey time across the Irish Sea is precisely the same as the time it takes to drop people off by the mouth of the Niger, so don’t get suspicious, if there is a small delay.

  135. A lot of people in the Third World complain about how borders were drawn. In a way, I am sympathetic because I think parts of the world had the idea of a nation-state forced on them before they were really ready for it.

Of course, it is urbanizing so maybe that will change things eventually.

To be honest my knowledge of Mandarin is limited to basic stuff, I wouldn’t profess to be any sort of expert on Chinese phonology and how equivalent tones work across dialects but I have read a few times that tones are less important in Mandarin than in say Cantonese, mainly because Mandarin has many more polysyllabic words than Cantonese does, so there is less chance of ambiguity in Mandarin from an incorrect tone.

Not that I’m suggesting it’s possible to speak decent Mandarin while totally ignoring the tones, just that perhaps over time it’s possible that Mandarin could evolve into a non-tonal, or at least more minimally tonal language if it started to be widely spoken by non-natives?

It’s interesting that about 60% of Japanese and Korean words derive from Chinese and yet they are pronounced without the original tones. Obviously Japanese and Korean are structurally completely different languages to Chinese so it’s not a direct comparison, but it does prove that many Chinese words can still be distinguished without the tones.

I wish more Indians stated their views on whites openly like you do, then maybe less British people would naively believe that Indians, especially Sikhs, are their friends and allies and repatriation of your kind back to where you belong would become a viable possibility.

Some promising news about the lacking ADE ability of SARS-CoV-2:

Vaccines are essential to control the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and to protect the vulnerable population. However, one safety concern of vaccination is the possible development of antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE) of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The potential infection of Fc receptor bearing cells such as macrophages, would support continued virus replication and inflammatory responses, and thereby potentially worsen the clinical outcome of COVID-19. Here we demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 neither infect human monocyte-derived macrophages nor induce inflammatory cytokines in these cells, in sharp contrast to Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus and the common cold human coronavirus 229E. Furthermore, serum from convalescent COVID-19 patients neither induced enhancement of SARS-CoV-2 infection nor innate immune response in human macrophages. These results support the view that ADE may not be involved in the immunopathological processes associated with COVID-19, however, more studies are necessary to understand the potential contribution of antibodies-virus complexes with other cells expressing FcR receptors.

Thank you for the wordpress link. Right up my alley.

Our eldest daughter hopes to start learning Russian later this year. In the event that she attends a year or more of college in Russia someday, we are laying the groundwork. We have been living in southern California for about a decade, though, and are largely ruined for real cold weather. As beautiful as Saint Petersburg would be, say, visiting in winter or even moving there to be with her and maybe one of the other kids, brrrr…….

Would it be wrong to play a quiet recording under her bed at night for subliminal effect, you know, flowing water mixed with “university of so-chi, so-chi, sohhhhhhhh-cheeeeee……”

  151. RadicalCenter says

That is an excellent point. Hadn’t thought of that. Would seem to be a jarring change for native mandarin speakers, but then again, their government would have no qualms forcing the issue. How would kids learning the tone-free Mandarin communicate with their elders, though, during the long transition?

The Chinese need to eliminate the dang tones even more than the germans need to stop having three words for ‘The” for no good reason. “Der, die, das” is the bane of my existence when I try to chat a little with a German speaker; I sound alright until then, remembering a decently complex vocabulary and presenting a good accent given the long lack of practice …. and then der, die, das, and I sound like a wetback.

Mandarin just too hard if you’re not a youngster. I guess the easier route would be to just stay in the usa when we retire and buy Rosetta Stone: Spanglish.

Russia’s Izvestia newspaper, which later found Nikita, reported that he had refused to wash after the kiss.

“I just liked him [Mr Putin] and he liked me very much. I want to be president myself,” the boy was quoted by the daily as saying.

    Putin later recalled

“He seemed to me very independent, very serious, but at the same time a boy is always vulnerable. He was very sweet. I’ll be honest, I felt an urge to squeeze him like a kitten and that led to the gesture that I made. There was nothing behind it really,” Putin said, smiling.
