London feels like attractive “insurance” for family of wealthy people, partly for the precise reason there is not too much cooperation between governments in the UK and Russia.
There is no sharing information about assets between governments for tax purposes, no mechanism for seizing assets, there is no cooperation in tax policy, and there is not even an extradition agreement. I don’t think there is even any communication to authorities in Russia, if you receive a visa.
If relations would become friendly between the governments, then such legal agreements would be established, and some of the “attraction” of London would be reduced.
At the same time, if relations were “too friendly” with England, that visa requirements were reduced or eliminated, then a large proportion of young people would emigrate and then flood London to work in e.g. Macdonald’s, where the salary is six times higher for the same job as in Russia. London would be flooded with vast numbers of not rich and not so skilled gastarbeiters from every part of the country, and a currently discrete situation for Russians of London would become something embarrassing like it is for Poles in London currently (except if you could imagine the flooding with 5 times more people).

Manufacturing PMI at only 41 is fairly severe. IIRC, the worst it got during the 2008 financial crash was something like 33-34. So still not cataclysmic but very bad. Germany had a contraction last quarter. If it has one again in the current one then according to the official definiton, they’ll have a recession. It looks all but inevitable at the moment.
Swedish unemployment also jumped the most in over 6 years last month. The last run we had from 2013~2018 is likely coming to an end. Central banks all over are already deep in negative territory, except the Fed but they are quickly falling back again.
I wonder if we’ll see “helicopter money” now. Central banks just printing money and then the governments using them for fiscal stimulus instead of QE, which was more convoluted and indirect.

Climate change appears to be a serious issue, and even if it does turn out to be fake many strategies for combating carbon dioxide emissions (also methane, N2O, etc.) are low cost, cost neutral, or sometimes cheaper than current practices. There are also climate change fighting strategies which have other benefits.
We’re supposed to be motivated by data, and since we can approach this from a scientific perspective rather than a religious one we can offer serious, effective, and non-hysterical solutions.

In a few decades, most meat will be produced in factory vats, like tofu or wine is produced today, although with some more engineering. Animals will not need to be killed for most meat production.

I actually think climate change is important, it’s just the question what should be done about it. Many of the policies pushed by Greens don’t strike me as constructive…electric cars (whose ecological bilance may not be all that great either) are no use when you’re doing your best to destroy secure energy supply, as the fanatics who oppose both atomic and coal power do. And as it is currently, the technology just isn’t suitable for the needs of many people. There’s also a class issue here, with a divide between urbanites and people living in rural or peripheral regions. I am sure rising sea levels are and will be problem – for example, if you live in Netherlands or Caribbean. At the same time, there may also be benefits of rising temperatures in some areas of the world.
Society can adapt to changing sea levels, it happens slowly, and the extent of human ability to change the sea levels (as opposed to ability to successfully adapt to them) is small.
On the other hand, you as an individual, probably will not successful adapt if you get health problems from the bad ecology – you’ll be trapped by it being too late.
We mostly are very complacent about change in our risk of oncological diseases created by bad ecology. People might leave an area with higher sea levels, but they rarely leave cities with higher rates of oncological disease.

This is a strange teleological argument. It might be binding if you believe in Old Testament texts which claim this. But actually there is no such purpose or design in nature.
No it doesn’t. It comes from increased knowledge of reality. We can observe consciousness or “soul” in ourselves, and that our deeper sense of good and evil is derived from this.
The important question of morality in relation to something outside ourselves, derives from our recognition of consciousness existing outside of our own.
Now if you are Cartesian, and believe that animals are machines without containing consciousness – then we can use them the same as a material object.
But from the 20th century already, the position of Descartes became impossible scientifically. You cannot avoid a conclusion that the consciousness exists in many species of animals, and in some animals is almost the same as our own (as the neurological correlates are almost the same).
Currently, we can probably go for some time with the idea that our human consciousness is qualitatively more refined and interesting than that of an animal, and therefore it should have priority including in meat consumption.
But this is probably only a historically temporary position. After it becomes easy to engineer meat, then the societal view will also shift.
This is a result of your social conditioning and because in your culture these views signal certain things which seem to be desirable to you.
But of course, in the interesting sense concepts like “fundamentally immoral” are not a result of customs and political posing. It is a result of states of consciousness and has to have a real scientific basis. If something creates an unpleasant state of consciousness (such as torturing a baby, creates in the baby), this is immoral. If something created a pleasant state of consciousness (such as providing a scholarship for a talented blind pianist to study at a music school) then this is moral.
If animals can contain consciousness of similar quality to human (and this is a scientific question), then the same issue generalizes as for other people.
Again this is in the permanent or “deep” sense of moral. Not in the sense of “custom”, which is something more temporary and contingent on stage of history, country, etc.

If such views were idiosyncratic, then they would only be interesting for us to the extent you might be able to enforce it on other people, or to the extent we might be interested in you biographically (e.g. if you were an author and I wanted to understand your perspective to access the great novel you have written). Alternatively, it might be interesting if it reflected something in the current historical stage or technological level (which is what your views seem to reflect).
For example, when man achieves the technological level to kill a woolly mammoth, then this kind of view would have emerged (that man is above the other animals). While when the technological level was not adequate to this, man would probably have believed the woolly mammoth was above him.
But in nature itself, there do not exist these categories, or concepts of higher and lower. There’s no particular view that one animal should “serve” another (the concept of “serve” itself has no sense outside of low intelligence level of human culture). A simple Chinese man might think sharks are designed to serve their soups. But a European will disagree. And indeed a shark might still sometimes reverse the order and eat the Chinese man that forgot his technology and goes into the sea without a boat.

Climate change isn’t just about rising sea levels. A big problem for the movement is that you had people who were pretty hysterical at times in their tone. James Hansen’s more infamous quotes about manhattan being underwater shortly made him an easy target. It also obscured that most of what he said was reasonable.

I make a comparison here to immigration activists. Many of the earliest ones were saying extreme things. Take Enoch Powell. His quote about the “black man having the whip hand over the white man” is obviously bullshit. It was a shock quote intended to shake people out of complacency, but it also had the risk of making him look unhinged (which it did, same with James Hansen). Yet his fundamental analysis was not wrong. In fact, Enoch’s demographic estimate for the year 2000 was almost spot on in terms of racial dynamics. The same thing can be said about early climate change actisits.
Beyond rising sea levels, you also have the issue of uneven distribution of rains. In India, the amount of monsoon water they get has declined, but not massively. What has changed is that they used to get a more evenly distributed share of rain over the entire season. Now they get a lot more rain squeezed into a far fewer raining days, and this has led to crisis.

Actually Asperger doesn’t impact judgment per se, only the expression of that judgment. Given that in a social situation those are the same thing, we can only judge Greta on what she says. What she is clearly suffering from is a low level hysteria. Her family background is rather interesting: a high class, aspirational, broken family – that often leads to children being unhinged and forcing the boundaries of everything. There is probably also some alcohol and Weimar-like behaviour that played a part.
The other possibility is that Greta is a random, clear-headed prophet and we are all going to sink under the water. I’ve been to Russia (Moscow St P Kazan Samara Chelyabinsk) Ukraine (Kiev, Carpathians) and Kazakhstan (Alma Ata and Astana) and it seems Kazakhstan and Kiev are totally russian speaking. In kazakhstan all films in the cinema were in Russian. At university one summer it taught English in a summer camp to Ukrainian kids from Kiev and Odessa in Zakarpattia, they all were russian speaking, down to about 4 years old, whilst the locals there were totally Ukrainian speaking. The Russian language in Ukraine refuses to die (I’d assume Moldova is the same), but do you think it may eventually? In Kazakhstan no young people speak kazakh, I’m not sure if this is the same for Uzbekistan (I heard in Georgia the youth don’t speak Russian anymore, but in Armenia they do). How does this affect Russian nationalism?

More coal power plants that release SO3 aerosols would cool the climate. Deindustrialization in Central Europe (after Soviet Block collapse) is partly responsible for increase of temperature in last 20-30 years.

Norway does very well, but then they are blessed with nearly all hydro. The same is true to an extent for Finland and Sweden, where hydro forms a big part of our grid. Hydro can’t be scaled across the world, so it is a non-solution on a global scale. The Netherlands also has low costs, but their grid is very dirty and polluted. France shows that you can combine reasonably low costs with low emissions, without the “luxury” of hydro. I honestly do not understand atomophobia.

Looking at the Nordic power grid, the price per MWh at 22.00 tonight was 36.23 euro in Sweden and 44.64 euro in Lithuania. Yet Sweden apparently has almost twice the cost per KWh to the consumer. Literally at the time of writing, Sweden is exporting 3.1 TW to its neighbors. The integration of the European power markets certainly have increased the Swedish prices.
I have however found that, as a consumer, the main power cost in practice seems to be the fixed ‘grid fee’ charged by the power providers. The variable per-KWh cost is usually just a fraction of that.

The fact that white people are a much smaller share of the global population is not a strong argument because white countries are highly industrialised with very few exceptions, so our per capita emissions are much greater. That means that are aggregate emissions are also far higher than our population share alone would suggest. Even if China is a bigger aggregate polluter, it doesn’t change the fact that Western countries are huge contributors to emissions themselves. You can’t solve only one, you need both pieces.
More fundamentally, the argument also contains a nonsensical zero-sum component. Why should anyone make an arbitrary choice between cleaning in front of your own door and making sure the others are, too. This planet is a shared space. Our political borders are irrelevant to mother nature. I think there is a lazy assumption at play that Europe won’t be much affected by climate change. I’ve seen maps showing that the impact will be mostly neutral on Central Europe and even positive on Northern Europe.
First, the major troubles that German industry faced due to low water levels, in turn caused by abnormally high temperatures, has already exposed this as a lie at worst or a naïve forecast gone wrong at best. Second, beyond climate effects there are also going to be huge population pressures at play. The hardest hit countries by climate change will be severely destabilised and this will push many more people towards (relatively) safer, more stable places, which usually means going further up north. And as I pointed out previously, commenters on anonymous internet forums and blogs sections who think we can shoot tens of millions of people are nothing more than delusional LARPers.
I can relate to this. When I first heard of vegetarianism as a kid, it was explained to me in terms of health concerns. I was deeply skeptical of this, without having any good reason to be. Somehow between then and my mid-teen years, I developed a hatred for people who were vegetarians that was quite apart from any health claims they made about their diet. Later on, when I heard of a special class of vegetarian that opposed all animal products – vegans – and not necessarily for health reasons, but because it was “wrong” to eat animals, my hatred was off the charts. It was hugely invigorating to learn that these faggots were actually wrong about their health claims.
Still, for all that, I think vegans have a case about excessive cruelty to animals marked for slaughter. It doesn’t – and won’t – stop me eating meat, but it doesn’t sit well with me to think of animals who never had any real shot at “freedom” and/or who are killed at a disturbingly young age. Battery hens are the best/worst example of this. Even as a kid I was disturbed the first time I saw this set up with my own eyes. Nothing will ever convince that eating meat is wrong – I could justify shooting vegans before I could justify banning meat – but I think improvements could and should be made to the way animals are treated prior to slaughtering them, even if it means paying up a little.

For starters, you need to consider that the rest of the world wants at least the same standards as whitey. When I was a boy and first heard about vegetarianism, to be honest I thought it was strange too, but it did not ilicit hate or ill will within me towards these people. To each his own. My superficial impression of Brazil (not knowing much about it), is that their main problem* are high crime rates.
The eventual aging population (higher median age) that will follow in decades after the decline in fertility rates in Brazil, will be a strong downward pressure on crime rates.
Vast majority of crimes are by people aged 15-30 years.
In Russia, as median age has increased to almost 40, there has been a strong reduction in crime levels (although it is not only because of the higher median age, it is one of the causes for the reduction).
Median age in Brazil is around 32 years now (similar to Russia in the 1990s, although there was a public health crisis in the 1990s which has slowed increase in median age).
That said, aging could eventually have negative effects on Brazil’s economy and increase their dependency ratio, so the positive will also accompany a lot of negative with this issue – as discussed a many times on this forum.

Israel’s election came and went. I didn’t follow it too closely because Lieberman basically threw a hissy fit. The political situation has not materially changed. Netanyahu has an AG hearing in October about the bribes and the corruption, among other issues. He wanted to quickly form a government previously so he could exonorate himself. Gantz and Lieberman have both publicly raised the specter of a Likud palace coup to get rid of Netanyahu, which would smoothen the way for a unity government (Likud + B&W, and possibly a few more parties).
Netanyahu being the perennial survivor, has managed to get the first shot at forming a government. In some ways, whether he survives politically or not is not that important in the long run. To me, the most interesting part of the Israeli election was when Netanyahu panicked and proposed to annex large parts of the West Bank. Gantz, who is supposed to be the liberal moderate (or at the very least more liberal than Netanyahu), responded by boasting that Netyanyahu had stolen the idea from him. I seem to recall that Bennett was the one most associated with the idea a few years ago, but who cares about details right?
If Israel decides to annex large parts of the West Bank, it will be faced with a stark choice. Either it offers citizenship to the Palestinian/Arabs living there, further negatively altering the demographic composition of the electorate. Or it keeps them without citizenship but then it will be easier than ever to levy the accusation of Israel being an Apartheid state. The only other option would be a large ethnic cleansing campaign, but I find it doubtful that even a shabbos goyim administration like Trump’s would greenlight that. Still, Israel has had two large waves of ethnic cleansing before (48 and 67). Both of which were initiatived by Labour, supposedly leftist.

It underlines the demographic challenge Israel has. Within Jewry, it is getting far more religious and more fundamentalist. Lieberman’s hissy fit can and should be seen in this context. No, but I am realistic about it and we should not deny the beneficial side of imperialism when it comes to spreading culture and civilization. But it depends who is the imperialist. When a higher civilization conquers a lower civilization then the net benefit is positive. Possibly Germany and Eastern Europe would have been in a better shape if they were conquered by Romans. But if a lower culture conquers higher culture (vide Turks and Byzantium or Russia and Baltic States) then the net benefit is negative.
Once I asked an elderly German-Austrian friend of mine which country did he think the Jews disliked the most. He squirmed because he insists on having jewish friends. Then answered: Russia. And then? Germany. And then? Spain.

Autistic people are usually excellent in their specialty areas, because they have a high attention span and can study the same topic for hours.

I can speak Spanish so I understand it but you couldn’t understand it with just Latin, since even the Latin cognates have undergone too many morphological changes to be obvious.
There’s a significant enough market in Spanish history in England to sustain popular books; for instance Geoffrey Parker’s books about Philip II and even his grand strategy specifically and Hugh Thomas’ multi-volume history of the Spanish empire. In fact, when I was in Madrid I saw that most of the Spanish books in museum bookshops were English works that had been translated into Spanish.
On the subject of Spanish history, over the summer I read Spain: A Unique History by Stanley Payne (Anglo-American). It’s more historiography – a history of the history of Spain – and a good corrective to the dominant PC propaganda without succumbing to right wing contrarianism.
Also, the six part British (Granada) TV documentary on the Spanish Civil War – free on YouTube – gives a much more balanced account of the war than the couple of more recent continental ones I’ve seen which were hysterically pro-Republican. It probably is good because it came out in the early 1980s before PCness ruined everything.
I’ve read it too, interesting book.
Payne has also written a biography of Franco which seemed quite balanced to me (doesn’t omit the darker aspects like the mass repression during and immediately after the civil war or Franco’s pro-Axis sympathies during much of WW2, but avoids the demonization which seems to be common to many other books about Franco).

Also, a native speaker of English, Italian, or French, who is well versed in his own language, should be able to identify and understand the roots of many Spanish words, consistent thus far with Dmitry’s position. But we cannot quickly and readily tell how they are conjugated (verbs) or declined (nouns).
Learning enough basic Spanish to get by in simple conversations is one thing. I’ve done that just living in this Latino colony called Los Angeles. Learning Spanish well enough to read an article, let alone a novel, is a different proposition even for intelligent people with high knowledge of the common etymology of Romance languages (Latin roots).

Vigilance against heretics and nipping the problem in the bud prevented something like what Martin Luther did to Germany, which resulted in the deaths of 30% of Germans.
Also, mercy was not an unknown element of the Inquisition. During this process most people tried for heresy repented and were not killed. The ones who were killed were actually unrepentant ones, who chose to die rather than submit. So yes, they really were heretics, and they were those zealous heretics who voluntarily chose death over repentance. Again, compare to what was happening among the English and other Protestants who spread horror stories about the Inquisition – murdering 10,000s of mostly innocent “witches.”
That was pretty much unavoidable, given the Spanish model of colonization: military conquest of vast territories on several continents, exploitation of their riches and religious conversion of their inhabitants. None of this required female settlers in those distant lands and, in any case, this race mixing didn’t affect the metropolis.
A similar phenomenon happened in territories colonized by British or Dutch that were not very suitable for the settlement of European families, such as the Caribbean.

As far as I can see in most international IQ studies, this did not have a very depressing effect on the Spanish average IQ but I have the impression that it did have a long-term effect on some other personality traits. Without any knowledge of DNA, by the end of the 19th Century people in the Basque Country, that was never conquered by the Muslims, realized that the immigrants coming from the South to their incipient industrial centers were of a very different character. Basque nationalism was born at that time and had a very strong racial component, as opposed to its current cultural/linguistic emphasis.
In fact, Spaniards themselves were aware of this problem in the 16th Century. Only persons of proven Christian roots or natives of the Northern regions (“Old Christians”) were allowed to become officers in the imperial army and navy. The rest were relegated to rank and file positions.

Well, you can broadly say that reformation eroded the – already to a large extent only nominally existing – central authority down by destroying the power of the Catholic Church, which in previous centuries held it together and prevented protracted civil wars from happening. It also created an ideology which aligned the northern princes with foreign powers against the imperial center.
So I would argue that yes, it was largely responsible for that war. But not a proximate cause, rather like how you can say that Marx’s and Engels’ writings and founding an ideology led to the Russian Civil War and later in the 20th century a few mass murderous forms of government like Stalinism or Maoism.
Also, it’s similar in the sense that you can argue that some similar ideology was due to happen anyway, and so the Thirty Years War or the mass murdering leftist regimes in the 20th century were inevitable anyway. (But that’s just basically saying that if Luther hadn’t written something similar, then someone else would’ve come up with a similar ideology, and the same thing about Marx. Which may or may not be true.)

I’ve always been amused by the Catholics who want to draw a moral equivalency between the persecution of Catholics in England and that of Protestants in Spain.
They’ll trip over themselves when talking about the disabilities suffered by English Catholics, which were quite real. So then I ask them about how those compared to the disabilities suffered by Spanish Protestants, and it gets real quiet. There were no Spanish Protestants, they were all dead.

If you want to read fiction in Spanish – I find the vocabulary is quite unique for Spanish (you can’t infer it from Russian/English/French, etc).
But if you look documentary literature, a large proportion of the words are shared the languages.
If you read every week an article of Vargas Llosa for example, from El Pais – I believe you will understand part of the article without need for study (and with a few weeks or months of study, you could read the majority of it).

The Catholic places where the Inquisition was strongest (Spain and Italy) were the ones with the fewest witch-killings. IIRC once the Roman Inquistion took over all witch trials nobody was killed as a witch anymore.
Again, the Inquisition applied due process and required evidence. People accused of witchcraft wanted the Inquistion to handle their case. The Inquisition targetted heretics. It provided them with mercy if they recanted and expressed remorse. The ones killed were mostly fanatics, like that deist guy killed in 1828. It wasn’t some sort of terror organization as anti-Spanish propagandists made it out to be. Having the Inquistion didn’t make Spain or Italy somehow morally “worse” than those countries that did not have it.

I’ve used loose language in my attempt at humor, though I think there is a grain of truth in it. At that time of year, there are no many tourists. You can book for the hotel room in the labyrinth streets of the old city easily. (We booked a room when we arrived at 8pm, without knowing anything about what was this city Seville).
On semana santa actual days, then I believe hotels will be booked, with millions of tourists there (from all over Spain). Seats near the procession in Seville cost hundreds of euros each.
But mysterious night procession rehearsals are going through the streets every Friday for weeks before actual semana santa.

Re: The Spanish Inquisition
The Spanish Inquisition is one of the two main pillars of the Spanish Black Legend, the other being the extractive nature of the Spanish conquest of the Americas. It would be fair to say that the Spanish Inquisition is then depicted as bloody, retrograde, and holding back Spanish pursuit of knowledge.
1) A bloody and retrograde institution.
The Spanish Inquisition was founded to counter the deliberate subversion of the Christian moral order, thus ultimately also the political order. Its purpose then was to retain political and moral order.
The precedents would be the Church’s local fights against the loony cathars (1184) and albingensians (1209), until it created a centralized Inquisition under Dominican rule in 1234. Also, and specifically regarding the converso problem in Spain, one has to take into account that the Church had come to know the contents of the Talmud through the conversion of Jew Nicolas Donin in 1238 and had then started to realize that Jews were not only patiently awaiting the Messiah, but had religious injunctions to mistreat and cheat Christians, and regular prayers against Christians. Since actions follow naturally from ideas, the Jews had become resentful, abusive and subversive of the Christian order. After Donin, the Church set upon a course of disputations to foster jewish conversion, which produced many true conversions. (The idea had solid precedents, a Church Father already enjoined along the lines of “love thy enemy not because he is your enemy, or because he is right, but that through that love he may convert and become your brother in Christ”). But of course, with conversion came social benefits that were not granted to admitted Jews, and false conversions.
The Jews in Spain were known to have helped the Muslim conquest since the beginning in 711, and during the subsequent centuries. It will surprise no one in the Unz commentariat that they were regarded as a fifth column, and that their ties with converso Jews, powerful through usury and in government, caused suspicion. The loyalty of these Christian conversos to Christ and King was the jurisdiction of the S. Inquisition.
The Inquisition founded in 1478, lived for another 356 years, and had jurisdiction wherever the monarchy had, that is, in all the empire. It executed less than 3,000 persons, or around 9 a year. It kept extensive records, and applied torture to only 1-2% of cases. Torture was legal at the time, yet the Inquisition could not torture to death or risk of death or mutilate, was often done in the presence of a doctor and the proceedings recorded. Later use of torture was abolished. Many of the tortures depicted by John Foxe in his Book of Martyrs were not used by the Inquisition, but by civil governments. The accuser could not be anonymous, and was investigated to see if he would profit by his accusation. The accused was notified, could recuse a judge and bring witnesses to speak for him. He could have his possessions and writing materials in his cell. He could leave to go to Mass and certain pilgrimages. He could recant his heresy and avoid death. A measure of the institution is that common civil prisoners blasphemed (while in prison) to attempt to be drawn into the Inquisition’s jurisdiction.
Were other civil authorities across Europe as humane? More humane? Did those other authorities a) uphold the existing, legitimate moral order or b) imposed a new one for their own particular benefit (Henry VIII and German princes)?
2) That the Spanish Inquisition hampered the development of thought and culture of Spain.
The Inquisition started just before the greatest flourishing of Spanish culture. The “Siglo de Oro” under Habsburg rule is commonly dated from 1492, the year of unity and expansion, to the death of Calderon de la Barca (1681). Language and law were codified, as were the philosophical underpinnings of Christian civilization. Close to two centuries of steady production of beauty and thought.
And how to gauge the immense effort of transferring Christian civilization where the monster-gods had reigned? The sheer effort of organizing, of building, of technological transfer, of preserving local knowledge in a whole continent should count as a clear cultural achievement. An anecdote about Philip II tells how, when interviewing explorers recently returned from the Phillipines, he was told it was a very poor, backwards land with little in the way of resources. “There is nothing there, Majesty.” He countered: “Are there souls?”. The Phillipines are named after him.
To gauge the Inquisition, look at the 300 years of peace in Spain (peninsular and American) from 1521 to 1821. Unity was the precursor to order, growth and flourishing.
The State of Zacatecas is nowadays a poor part of Mexico, but its capital of the same name is a rather beautiful town, built when it was part of Spain, in the local rose-colored stone. During Semana Santa, they do a Procession of Silence, that narrates the Christ’s Passion. Local parishes have these brotherhoods, who organize and fund the event.

As can be seen from these numbers(if they are correct), lumping all of Northern Europe in with the Holy Roman Empire and then comparing them to Southern Europe, is highly misleading.
Even if we credit Southern Europe’s subjection to the Inquisition as the cause of its lower numbers of people killed as witches, that difference is more than made up for by the peope killed by the Inquisition. I would also suggest that the distinction between witches and heretics is mostly not a real one. Therefore there would be more justification in combining the deaths from witchcraft trials and from Inquisition trials together than would be putting all of Northern Europe into one bucket(or, in case it needs to be said, putting all of Protestant Europe into one bucket).
If we do that, and adjust for population, we would find that France is the most moderate, not Spain, Portugal, Italy. We would also conclude that places with more religious divisions look worst in this comparison(Holy Roman Empire). It’s a smaller effect, but we would also observe that more backwards places among the areas of comparison(Scandinavia and Scotland) may have had more witches killed per head. But I fail to see any evidence for the glories of the Spanish Inquistion with regards to witchcraft trials.

Inquisition served other purposes (see the excellent comment #367). A peripheral but beneficial side-effect was far fewer witch killings.
If you are going to include Inquisition to witch-killings for southern Europe, then you can add various political executions meant to try to maintain order (a main purpose of the Inquisition) for northern Europe. Henry VIII alone executed 10,00os of people. You may also consider the millions of deaths caused by various religious wars in northern Europe, that were probably prevented by the Inquisition rooting out and snuffing out heretics and troublemakers before they could cause serious harm.

The idea that religious wars would have occurred in southern Europe if not for the Inquisition is speculative, and not very interesting. Logically speaking, the argument that the Inquisition was good because it might have prevented these wars says very little. One could argue with as much validity that if the Catholics in northern Europe had just converted to Protestantism, there would have been no wars either! Or maybe if everyone in Europe had just stayed pagan, none of the religious wars would have happened. One could even make arguments about the superiority of Orthodox Christianity from this perspective.

A lack of insider support? Some social dynamic among normie Dem voters I don’t understand? Is she not seen as black enough? Is a “black” woman lawyer somehow less appealing than a “black” man lawyer (Barry)? Are the effects not additive?
I get that Gabbard BTFOed Harris in a debate, but that isn’t much of an explanation. A fundamentally strong candidate would have weathered that, the way Sleepy Joe weathered all that press of him getting handsie. Biden is essentially openly criminal, yet he’s still #2. I think that a lot of us fail to grasp some key dynamics at work here. On paper Harris should be almost unbeatable in this field, according to progressive axioms, but she’s a paper tiger. Perhaps i am under the influence of the Black Legend, but i will have to disagree with you on that. British and Spanish colonialism had different charaters due to the different circumstances. With the British colonies being less densely populated than the Spanish ones. If anything they were just as bad for the non-white people. Allthough i would argue that British America gave more rights to white residents, than Spanish America gave to it’s white residents. Though immigrants to Spanish America may have been wealthier due to the cheeper manpower there.
