I have been doing some useful “infrastructure” behind the scenes that will be revealed in another 1-2 weeks that be of use to my readers. More immediately, I have a good feeling that this weekend I’ll finally get my “Great Bifurcation” concept written up, as opposed to cryptically mentioning it in the comments every so often.

  1. This is the current Open Thread, where anything goes – within reason.

If you are new to my work, start here.

  2. Any updates on your Serbia visit?

  3. The Naked Mole-Rat: An Unusual Organism with an Unexpected Latent Potential for Increased Intelligence?

    Interesting.

Take, for example, dolphin, sea otter and beaver – otherwise unrelated species of above average intelligence – what do they have in common? They dive. My favorite theory is that increased brain is just an adaptation for low oxygen environment.

So there we have an animal that found a low oxygen environment underground instead of under water.

  4. That article is bull shit Hindi Russi Bhai Bhai STFU!
    https://youtu.be/5o4Y-i3kmdo

  5. Why did the Russian army have so many officers at the time of the Revolution? The White guard was founded almost entirely by officers. The army was not demobilised as Kerensky wanted to keep the war going. Is this the answer? So why so many in Kiev?

  6. From Douglas Adams’ “Hitchhiker’s guide to the Galaxy”:
“For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.”

  7. Reading Bulgakov much? He is totally disapproved of by “svidomy” in Kiev.

On a serious note: officers ran away from the Red Army. Privates had no reason to run, so they didn’t.

  8. Short story recommendation: ‘Pump Six’, by Paolo Bacigalupi.

The man is an unregenerate leftist, but he has (almost certainly inadvertently) written a great conservative story about what society is going to look like when the Great Replacement takes hold.

  9. Thulean Friend says

The FT article you linked is total trash.

China’s social and economic system has created an uneven playing field favouring Chinese companies in competition with their western counterparts, both domestically and internationally. Engaging in a race against China in this space and in this manner means the west risks becoming more like China, rather than the reverse, as Henry Kissinger might have hoped.
While China is practising socialism with Chinese characteristics, the west appears to be gradually embracing capitalism with Chinese characteristics! If this pans out, China will have won the ideological war.

Hard to know where to start dismantling the bullshit. Let’s just say that the myth of the “free market economy” is just that. The US was the biggest IP piracy thief for most of its economic rise. So much so that the UK and other European powers raged against it constantly. History repeats itself.

Francis Cabot Lowell and many other Americans was doing to the UK what Chinese entrepreneuers were doing to the US several centuries later.

Alexander Hamilton, the first treasury secretary, instituted a series of highly protectionist tariffs and other barriers to protect domestic industry. These barriers did not meaningfully come down until the US was in a position of primacy.

Even beyond the US, the German economic model has been even more state-led. Everyone knows about Friedrich List, but fewer know about Ludwig Erhard, who was much more interventionist than is the fashion today. Sweden’s economy during much of the 20th century was one which would make Bernie’s economic plans look like Wall Street utopia.

If anything, the world is simply going back to an earlier era after 2-3 decades of hyper neoliberalism. This neoliberalism was only promoted because the leading powers did not feel threatened by outsiders. It was never any ideological commitment for its own sake.

The Washington Post was sold for $250 million in 2013 (though it’s probably worth more now). These properties seem to be priced entirely as cash cows – based on their ability to make money through subscriptions or ads. The extra value of using them for political influence seems to be priced around zero, and this price seems to be correct based on how little money is spent on political causes.

Does Scott Alexander really think that Bezos bought WaPo for its ads or subscriptions rather as a political tool to protect his larger fortune (Amazon pays very little taxes, among other issues). Lmao.

  11. Thulean Friend says

There was some discussion in the previous OT whether dance was inherently sexual as an artform. My position was and remains a firm no. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. Case in point.

    https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1175788089555456000

You can call this dancing many things – but sexual it isn’t.

  12. French Government this week denied Edward Snowden’s request to relocate himself to France

Denial occurred after French government ministries received reminder letter, that Edward Snowden is a CIA fraud

Report authored for European governments, and long in the hands of France’s DGSE intelligence agency, covered proofs that Snowden is CIA deception with ‘nothing really new’ alleged ‘revelations’

France’s intelligence services apparently long aware that Edward Snowden & Glenn Greenwald are CIA hoaxers, helping perhaps silence real whistle-blowers who are duped into contacting Snowden media partners

Snowden allegedly first ‘leaked’ to CIA-tied friend of Bush VP Dick Cheney at the Washington Post, Bart Gellman

Snowden refuses to make use of files possessed by Snowden’s legal team and by Wikileaks too, on bribery and corruption of USA federal judges in Virginia, even though they are the same judges who would put Snowden and Assange ‘on trial’, files already used to stop other USA extradition requests

  13. Thanks, I’ll check that out.

  14. anonymous coward says

You should Google the “Aquatic Ape” theory.

(Which, in any case, makes a lot more sense than the currently accepted “baboon with a stick that decided to walk upright because his shit was all retarded” theory.)

  15. The India article seems like denial of reality
Pence and Pompeo were going on an on about the “biggest democracies in the world” being “natural allies”, yet this has never manifested into anything tangible
India will not support the war on Iran because India gets it’s oil from Iran, India will not suddenly stop buying arms from it’s biggest arms supplier since it’s independence and flip off their UN veto buddy in order to get “advanced american tech”
Same case with Pakistan really, they have been fucking Americans over for over 2 decades now from hiding Bin Laden to being Chinas California (in terms of ports, not tech) yet Americans pretend it’s still 1971 over there
India has joined the SCO, accepted US sanctions in exchange for Russian Weapons and didn’t participate in any of USs current quagmires, yet Americans still claim them as allies
Indians are just motivated by what helps India, cutting off their own legs in exchange for Modi being given a Nobel Piss Prize or New Delhi getting the biggest gay pride parade in the world does not seem like a good trade, and they also won’t be fighting for some Russian war effort either
Indians either don’t like China or are ambivalent about it, but they have no interest in serving as cannon fodder against it just so Pompeo can get his wet dream fullfilled

Indian elites are in Sillicon Valley because they are all fluent English speakers and that’s where the money is for English speaking High Tech nerds, once that well dries up they’ll probably move to Shenzhen or try to create their own in like Mumbai or whatever
I really don’t get this line of thought tho, most Russian and Pakistani “elites” are in London yet the UK is not shown as some sort of ally of Russia and Pakistan, quite the opposite in some cases

  16. anonymous coward says

most Russian and Pakistani “elites” are in London

The real Russian elites are the guys with dumb faces in military-style hats. They’re mostly not in London.

  17. Since when did logic or basic understanding of how the world works have anything to do with US foreign policy?

Long ago I recall reading a book titled’ Blind Oracles’ about how the very big brains at various think tanks led the US into one foreign policy disaster after another.

US is presently the country with which we have the biggest trade surplus it’s yuuge and given our overall current account deficit we are very keen that a Trump trade war doesn’t start against us this being an election year in the US and we having some of the highest tariffs which we have no intention of lowering.

So there is this BS about the world’s two largest democracies being natural ‘pahdners’ etc. It’s working so far and doesn’t cost us anything really..

  18. Looking forward to see what you mean by infrastructure…

  19. I guess I got riled up because the article writer has an Indian name (or maybe he’s a Paki, I didn’t check)
It is always fun to read wrong predictions and poke fun at them, my favorites are:

-Japan becoming a superpower by 1990 and fighting another war with the US
    -Chinas 20 collapses since 1999
-Yugoslavia-Iraq-North Korea axis of evil (there was even Iraq style fake WMDs propaganda about Yugoslavia but they switched to Color Revolution instead of invasion)
-The various Central Asian republics becoming extremelly wealthy and developed akin to Gulf states like UAE due to their natural resources, today the CNC still pushes that same line about Siberian republics

  20. I wanted to formulate something about that article but then just waved it off as delusions of some ameriboo not worth the effort.
Jesus, they repeatedly fail to assemble T-90s from the russian kits to spec and constantly fuck up maintenance of their Su-30s, both well documented procedures without ambiguity, and then yap about muh high tech. What high tech, even more callcenters?

  21. Thorfinnsson says

Japan becoming a superpower by 1990 and fighting another war with the US

This was a reasonable prediction in 1970.

The people making the prediction in the 1980s were out to lunch.

  22. Thulean Friend says

The US hasn’t had foreign policy disasters once you understand that the Middle Eastern wars were started by US (dual) citizens who had tribal loyalty to Israel. They view the US as merely a pawn to use in that game. US foriegn policy in fact is perfectly rational in their view. What’s good for the US is irrelevant to them.

    From Marginal Revolution this morning:

Premature Imitation and India’s Flailing State

    https://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2019/09/premature-imitation-and-indias-flailing-state.html

India has most of the laws, rules, and regulations of a developed country but lacks the state capacity to enforce this. The alleged cause of this is that Indian elites take their cues from the West.

India has essentially all the inspections, regulations, and laws a developed country such as the United States has, but at approximately $235 of federal spending per capita the Indian government simply cannot accomplish all the tasks it has assumed. Consider: U.S. federal government spending per capita was five times higher in 1902 than Indian federal government spending per capita in 2006 (Andrews, Pritchett, and Woolcock 2017, 58). Yet the Indian government circa 2006 was attempting to do much more than the U.S. government did in 1902.

The full paper is available here: http://www.independent.org/pdf/tir/tir_24_2_01_rajagopalan.pdf

This reinforces a common theme on this blog, which is that you need to nationalize your elites.

  25. The Coming War with Japan was written in 1991
It’s a doozy, iirc it predicted China collapsing USSR style and Japan and US trying to carve out their spheres in the disintegrating Chinese state, thus setting off a conflict between the two

I think George Friedman, Gordon A. Chang and the gang ought to be labeled as “fantasy writers”
Changs China collapse series is Harry Potter for Neocons

  26. It’s his whole job as a gatekeeper of the approved right to be retarded.

  27. Yes I think I know a bit about the Israeli lobby it isn’t anything new.The parasites take over when the body’s immune system is compromised. The west ‘s societal immune system traditional family values, culture of savings, pride in ones own culture, conventions on interaction between the sexes etc has been compromised more than any other civilization resulting in the relative decline of power and prestige not seen since the collapse of the Roman Empire.

It’s lazy to blame Jews for everything. Why should they not take over your institutions and enrich themselves at your expense if you let them?Did westerners refuse the chance to take over eastern countries during their golden age out of a sense of morality when the East’s institutions were weak, corrupt and open to manipulation ?

The fact is mass prosperity to the undeserving masses,a welfare state which enables a single woman to raise a child without a man and a one man one vote democracy in which people vote for how much money they ‘deserve’ from the public purse and elections are swayed by pandering to the idiots(Most people are stupid even in high IQ countries) has brought about this state of affairs and made your countries susceptible to institution capture by special interest groups of which the Jews are just the most famous.

Unfortunately for you very few right wingers focus on the root cause while riling against the symptoms of institution capture..

  28. Dinesh D’Souza made a movie (in 2016) about Andrew Jackson being evil.

Then Trump put Jackson’s portrait in the White House.

The Republican Party can be hilarious.

  29. https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/9328852/albanian-gang-uk-sex-traffickers-cocaine-dealers/

The growing number of Albanian criminals in the UK seems to coincide with a suspicion that Kosovo is experiencing a Ukraine and Baltic style depopulation due to migration, this started when during their elections towns of 10 000 would only produce 1000 votes
I guess living in an irradiated half recognized statelet isn’t really appealing
There is together around a million Albanians in Switzerland, Germany and Austria, most (but definitely not all) of them are from Kosovo (this one was confirmed by a Kosovo MP in a tweet)

Graham Philips made a short video about it
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBt1r9vtJjU

It is starting to affect Albania proper aswell:
    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/09/14/schools-forced-close-albanian-town-emptied-young-men-recruited/

I would like to thank West Europeans for taking in these vibrant and diverse individuals into their homes and I look forward to hearing about how Birmingham was always Albanian and needs to secede from English opressors

  30. “elites” are in London

London feels like attractive “insurance” for family of wealthy people, partly for the precise reason there is not too much cooperation between governments in the UK and Russia.

There is no sharing information about assets between governments for tax purposes, no mechanism for seizing assets, there is no cooperation in tax policy, and there is not even an extradition agreement. I don’t think there is even any communication to authorities in Russia, if you receive a visa.

If relations would become friendly between the governments, then such legal agreements would be established, and some of the “attraction” of London would be reduced.

    • At the same time, if relations were “too friendly” with England, that visa requirements were reduced or eliminated, then a large proportion of young people would emigrate and then flood London to work in e.g. Macdonald’s, where the salary is six times higher for the same job as in Russia. London would be flooded with vast numbers of not rich and not so skilled gastarbeiters from every part of the country, and a currently discrete situation for Russians of London would become something embarrassing like it is for Poles in London currently (except if you could imagine the flooding with 5 times more people).

  31. How can anyone say right wingers are retarded when Dinesh D’Souza hits the lefties with devastating tweets like this?

The Right is in good hands.

  32. Third World Country Searching for First World Problems.

  33. My parents sent me some things from Bulgaria, as they were there for vacation.

I don’t know if any Balkan people know this stuff.

I guess Balkan people sell more lokum/Turkish delight, compared to chocolate (because I always ask for chocolate).

And which “Lukanka” is better to keep or to give away? The deer one or the pork/beef mixed one?

    https://i.imgur.com/0UcD2Ll.jpg

    https://i.imgur.com/rFQBwfn.jpg

  34. Lol, the English translation on the box calls the lokum “Bulgarian Delight”, as if the tourists will think it is invented in Bulgaria, not in Turkey.

  35. Pro-tip for Delights, serve one with Arab/Turkish style coffee to guests, actually any black coffee will do

  36. It’s a bizarre name really, we call it Ratluk and Bulgarians call it Lokum

  37. Thulean Friend says

Germany Limps Closer to Recession as Factory Output Plunges to 2009 Lows

Manufacturing PMI at only 41 is fairly severe. IIRC, the worst it got during the 2008 financial crash was something like 33-34. So still not cataclysmic but very bad. Germany had a contraction last quarter. If it has one again in the current one then according to the official definiton, they’ll have a recession. It looks all but inevitable at the moment.

Swedish unemployment also jumped the most in over 6 years last month. The last run we had from 2013~2018 is likely coming to an end. Central banks all over are already deep in negative territory, except the Fed but they are quickly falling back again.

I wonder if we’ll see “helicopter money” now. Central banks just printing money and then the governments using them for fiscal stimulus instead of QE, which was more convoluted and indirect.

  38. “It’s a bizarre name really, we call it Ratluk and Bulgarians call it Lokum”

    Wikipedia:
The Turkish names lokma and lokum are derived from the Arabic word luqma(t) and its plural luqūm meaning “morsel” and “mouthful”[6] and the alternative Ottoman Turkish name, rahat-ul hulküm,[7] was an Arabic formulation, rāḥat al-hulqūm, meaning “comfort of the throat”, which remains the name in formal Arabic.

  39. That’s a good idea – I like that kind of coffee.

There’s a street with some Middle Eastern shops in the city I live in which probably sell the Turkish (oops- I mean “Bulgarian”) coffee.

  40. Bhadrakumar himself is a multi-polarist who strongly favors the development of India’s ties with Russia and China, as can be seen through the rest of his body of work. That particular article is just an explanation of how Modi and the Indian elites conduct their foreign policy. And it is sadly correct. Bhadrakumar is lamenting this state of affairs, rather than endorsing it.

  41. Yes lokum in most languages I think. But in English, they call it “Turkish delight”.

Lol I have 4 boxes and they avoid the word “Turkish” for the English packaging in 3 different ways.

One of the boxes I have is called “Rose delight”. Another two called it “Bulgarian delight”.

    And one just called “Delight”.

    https://i.imgur.com/C6WuCmJ.jpg

  42. (oops- I mean “Bulgarian”)

All Balkanoids do this, it’s real cringy
Greeks call it Greek Coffee, Serbs call it Serb Coffee (or sometimes Homemade coffee), something similar is calling the Ottoman period an “occupation” as if we were in some sort of 300 year war during that period

Butthurt expressed in the naming things reeks of fake nationhood and superficial nationalism
I never use those terms and neither does anyone with a triple digit IQ, it’s fucking coffee, get over it, if we were fine with gutting Turks with Turkish Yatagans then drinking Turkish Coffee to stay awake should be no different (also it tastes better then Western style)

  43. Either way, I’m not convinced by his arguments

    https://www.blackrock.com/corporate/literature/whitepaper/bii-macro-perspectives-august-2019.pdf

The next downturn is unlikely to be like the last one, so while exploration of novel policy tools is always good I think this is overblown.

And in an ordinary recession, there’s no particular need for stimulus other than political expediency.

Policymakers also need to move beyond the headline GDP figure in recognition of the altered demographic situation. Japan frequently has quarters in which the economy technically contracts, but GDP per capita still goes up.

  45. Thorfinnsson says

It’s not “fucking coffee” since it’s unfiltered.

It should either be called Turkish Coffee or Balkan Coffee. The former is more historical given that the first Ottoman coffehouse was opened in Istanbul by Damascene merchants.

  46. This Tweet from @DineshDSouza has been withheld in Germany based on local law(s).

    Banned in Germany. 🙁

  47. Well, what is called “Turkish coffee” all over the world is called “Greek coffee” in Greece.

  48. also it tastes better then Western style

Filtered coffee is not necessarily bad. Filtered coffee at any gas station in Italy is better that the best Starbucks coffee in the US.

Why can’t we have a right-wing like this? One which isn’t a climate science denying pack of idiots. And one which actually keeps its promises. Modi promised a big beautiful wall against Bangladeshi “infiltrators” and he delivered. Now a bunch of illegal aliens are getting purged in Assam. Trump is not even bothering with the illegal aliens in the US. No wall anywhere in sight. Wouldn’t be surprised if he pushed for amnesty in his 2nd term. Seems almost like a GOP tradition.

  54. Kent Nationalist says

It was 4d chess to own the liberals by getting them to defend white girls with pigtails and so reveal their racism

  55. German_reader says

Why can’t we have a right-wing like this?

Some of the right is pretty stupid in its total denial of man-made climate change, but on the other hand, you can’t just ape the left either. The movement around that creepy Thunberg girl (who has obvious mental issues imo) has signs of a quasi-religious cult and is quite irrational in its hysteria imo; it’s also probably an astroturf operation by various “Green” lobbying organizations out for subsidies. In Germany there’s a real risk this climate change hysteria will lead to deindustrialization by making energy prohibitely expensive and wrecking the car industry through enforced switch to electrical cars. It’s also culturally destructive, since there’s now this argument that people in developed countries shouldn’t have children to save the planet (and hey, there’s a surplus of Africans anyway, so don’t procreate!).
imo the right shouldn’t ignore or ridicule environmental issues, but trying to out-compete a religious movement like Greta’s cult is futile, one needs to present an alternative vision.

  56. LoutishAngloQuebecker says

    Whitey is delusional, that’s why.

The majority of white people still believe that diversity is a strength.

White leftists hate whitey outright. White conservatives think that “as long as they assimilate they’re A-ok!”

There is no serious appetite for far-right, racial actions… well there is an appetite but it is too small.

I’ve kind of given up, at this point. If other whites come to their senses, good. If not, there’s no point wasting time trying to convince them the sky is blue.

  57. Thorfinnsson says

I’m not convinced that embracing “climate” as an issue will get us any votes for the simple reason that “climate” is part of the same leftist religion that worships troublesome colored people, homo-sexuals, etc. Perhaps it would get some votes from “educated” urban moderates who boldly profess themselves to be “fiscally conservative but socially liberal”.

That said, embracing “climate” as an issue and pointing out that leftist immigrationism and atomophobia inevitably increase carbon emissions at the very least throws a spanner in the works. Worth trying and probably cost free. Maybe some enraged car enthusiasts will boycott.

Thulean Friend is also coming at this from the Swedish perspective, where “climate” is of much greater religious importance than it is in many other Western countries.

  58. German_reader says

Thulean Friend is also coming at this from the Swedish perspective, where “climate” is of much greater religious importance than it is in many other Western countries.

He needs to overcome his conditioning, it was already embarrassing enough for Sweden when “Swedishfamily” celebrated France’s win in the football world cup. Thulean’s enthusiasm for eating bugs and soy food does nothing to dispel the “Sweden, yes!” meme.
I agree with you about the climate issue, while outright denial is bad imo (because it looks so stupid), there’s no point to adopting the hysterial attitude affecting much of the mainstream, would merely give added validation to the hegemonic discourse. Many of the policies pushed by Greens and their fellow travellers will also eventually prove to be extremely unpopular imo.
    Also agree about nuclear power.

  59. Thorfinnsson says

I am going to be generous to Thulean Friend this time.

Climate change appears to be a serious issue, and even if it does turn out to be fake many strategies for combating carbon dioxide emissions (also methane, N2O, etc.) are low cost, cost neutral, or sometimes cheaper than current practices. There are also climate change fighting strategies which have other benefits.

We’re supposed to be motivated by data, and since we can approach this from a scientific perspective rather than a religious one we can offer serious, effective, and non-hysterical solutions.

As far as his enthusiasm for bugman fake meat goes, I’ll chalk it up to novelty-seeking, ignorance of the medical consequences of industrial seed oils, and lack of awareness of the essential ecological role played by ruminants.

  60. Climate is a problem in some parts of the world, and it has always been that way; sh..t happens – heat waves, cold waves, droughts, floods. It is not a problem in my part of the world, and what is slightly inconvenient could be fixed by using more AC. That requires more energy and better infrastructure.

The solution in Europe is very simple: more Air Conditioning and no migrants, stable populations and Greta moving to Maldives to enjoy the drama as the water rises – by five f..ing centimeters. The horror! (Wasn’t England 5,000 years ago actually connected to Europe, what happened there too many camp fires?)

Using children as shock troops is very low. From Children’s Crusade to Mao’s Red Guards, it is usually the last gasp of an ideology that has lost all sense of reality.

  61. Climate change is not important.

But air pollution and ecological pollution in general, is extremely important, because it is one of the main ways something external to our responsibility is damaging our health and quality of life.

Priority for countries like German and Poland, should be to end the use of coal and replace it with relatively cleaner sources like gas.

    Greta’s cult is futile

Zeitgeist for promotion to martyrology now is the theme of the autistic teenage girl. Billie Eilish has a similar neurological problem and is suddenly promoted as well – beginning around 2017.

  62. The solution in Europe is very simple: Air Conditioning and no migrants

Are we really going to pretend that’s it? Even if the migrant flow is cut (and it won’t be) theres millions of them already there and they’re breeding faster then the Western Euros
It has to be stressed that this problem will never go away, how could it ever be solved?

Russians could gradually deport and repatriate the 1 to 2 million Churkas that reside in Moscow and things would be back to normal
In the UK this would require forcing a 180 shift in public opinion, demolishing hundreds of mosques in London, getting rid of it’s mayor, even some of it’s Lords and MPs, if all non-European migrants in London were deported then the city would be annihilated in terms of population (only 45% are White English), Paris and Berlin will soon be in similar situations
What drove that Aussie Mosque shooter mad was seeing how overrun France was, not even the rural areas were spared invasion
This isn’t even mentioning Sweden, holy shit

Simple policy changes will not and cannot stop this, and by the time “based” people get into power it will be too late
The French elite has no problem with replacing Frenchmen with Africans, it’s part of their 4d Chess plan to re-create their colonial Empire in Africa by tying all of those countries to France
Merkel is gonna get replaced but theres no signs that the AfD will get into power in time at current speed, especially with the all-powerfull Western Media leviathan sabotaging them
Spain is a socialist mess who accepts the ships that Italy rejects
The Dutch get to watch Blonde girls get druged up and railed by Africans on their state run TV
Sweden is straight up running Orwellian “there is no going back, deal with it” ads on it’s TV and internet and literally rewriting it’s history to include muslims and blacks into it, did you hear they also want to ban runes too
    hoo boy

Yugoslav civil war style ethnic purges would be require to just revert to year 2000 status quo, purity spirals would inevitably cause wars between the whites and we’d have a 30 years war style anarchy as the EU disintigrated

  63. In a few decades, most meat will be produced in factory vats, like tofu or wine is produced today, although with some more engineering. Animals will not need to be killed for most meat production.

The problem is killing of animals – which is bothering something’s consciousness – , not nonsense about climate change.

Probably the killing of animals is a real sin, and will seem that way in a few decades when meat can be produced by simple tissue engineering without create unpleasant states of consciousness.

I know people say that animals like cows wouldn’t exist in the same numbers if they weren’t needed. But it’s not a good argument, because simple existence is not a positive thing. The positive thing is the quality of the consciousness, not its mere division by quantity. (Ethically it is probably better these animals don’t exist in such large quantities, and their meat is produced by engineering processes, without needing to irritate consciousness).

  64. German_reader says

I actually think climate change is important, it’s just the question what should be done about it. Many of the policies pushed by Greens don’t strike me as constructive…electric cars (whose ecological bilance may not be all that great either) are no use when you’re doing your best to destroy secure energy supply, as the fanatics who oppose both atomic and coal power do. And as it is currently, the technology just isn’t suitable for the needs of many people. There’s also a class issue here, with a divide between urbanites and people living in rural or peripheral regions. Since urbanites often are rotten leftie cosmopolitans, their preferences shouldn’t be validated by right-wingers.
As for gas, there are other considerations as well, becoming dependent on foreign suppliers has obvious risks.

  69. climate change is important

I am sure rising sea levels are and will be problem – for example, if you live in Netherlands or Caribbean. At the same time, there may also be benefits of rising temperatures in some areas of the world.

Society can adapt to changing sea levels, it happens slowly, and the extent of human ability to change the sea levels (as opposed to ability to successfully adapt to them) is small.

On the other hand, you as an individual, probably will not successful adapt if you get health problems from the bad ecology – you’ll be trapped by it being too late.

We mostly are very complacent about change in our risk of oncological diseases created by bad ecology. People might leave an area with higher sea levels, but they rarely leave cities with higher rates of oncological disease.

If you compare that only around 500 people die from major plane crashes in 2018.

While we often have to fly in planes. But the desire to use coal-fired power plants instead of gas, was usually an unnecessary risk, created by bad choices, usually by government officials, in establishing their energy production.

  70. There are more cost-effective and nimble alternatives compared to nuclear power.

In relation to a question of electric vehicles – they will significantly improve quality of living in cities by the middle 21st century, due to reduction in air and noise pollution. And they are inevitable because of their greater energy efficiency will translate into becoming a more economically competitive transport probably as early as the 2030s decade.

The unknown is how quickly the electric vehicles will penetrate in the market. Probably I guess in the 2030s already they will become mainstream. I testdrove in a Tesla Model X, and aside from the impossibly high cost – which is probably temporary – this kind of automobile drives more enjoyably compared to a normal automobile as well.

  71. Thorfinnsson says

This is not a problem, and anyone who thinks it is a problem should be sent to a concentration camp.

To be human is to be an apex predator with dominion of over all animals, which today exist solely to serve human needs. The fulfillment of an animal’s purpose, the most noble thing any animal can do, is to die in service of mankind. An exception can be made for dogs, companion animals who co-evolved with us.

The idea that killing animals is somehow wrong stems from the same contemptible left-wing mindset that worships weakness and insists on equality in all social relations regardless of biological reality. It’s not surprising that these disgusting weaklings have begun to see animals as the next organism to be elevated by “equality”.

For this reason I will always reject lab-grown meat, as meat produced without animal slaughter is fundamentally immoral.

  72. Well, you are probably right. I am retreating into smaller Europe, whatever is left, mostly in the central and eastern parts of Europe. They can have London. Correction, they already have London.

The mental collapse among Western Europeans – and by far not just the manipulate elites – is something to behold, nothing this self-defeating and stupid has happened in human history. There are parts of Western Europe that might react in time to preserve their European character. But big metropolitan areas are gone – they will become something else. It is hard to judge, maybe some will even enjoy it – or pretend to enjoy it – it is their life, their homes.

Western populations as a whole have behaved quite stupidly and arrogantly in the last few years – they failed to stop a lot of evil done in their names, or often even supported it with hypocrisy and feigned helplessness. A civilization that goes off and bombs smaller countries in the name of ‘virtue’ is really not much of a civilization. What goes around, comes around.

Climate ‘change’ is not that crucial, climate always changes. It depends on where one lives – and large parts of Europe are actually going to benefit. And there is AC, learn how to use it. Or go outdoors or to the mountains, it is always quite comfortable outdoors.

This is a strange teleological argument. It might be binding if you believe in Old Testament texts which claim this. But actually there is no such purpose or design in nature.

killing animals is somehow wrong stems from the same contemptible left-wing mindset that worships weakness

No it doesn’t. It comes from increased knowledge of reality. We can observe consciousness or “soul” in ourselves, and that our deeper sense of good and evil is derived from this.

The important question of morality in relation to something outside ourselves, derives from our recognition of consciousness existing outside of our own.

Now if you are Cartesian, and believe that animals are machines without containing consciousness – then we can use them the same as a material object.

But from the 20th century already, the position of Descartes became impossible scientifically. You cannot avoid a conclusion that the consciousness exists in many species of animals, and in some animals is almost the same as our own (as the neurological correlates are almost the same).

Currently, we can probably go for some time with the idea that our human consciousness is qualitatively more refined and interesting than that of an animal, and therefore it should have priority including in meat consumption.

But this is probably only a historically temporary position. After it becomes easy to engineer meat, then the societal view will also shift.

reason I will always reject lab-grown meat, as meat produced without animal slaughter is fundamentally immoral.

This is a result of your social conditioning and because in your culture these views signal certain things which seem to be desirable to you.

But of course, in the interesting sense concepts like “fundamentally immoral” are not a result of customs and political posing. It is a result of states of consciousness and has to have a real scientific basis. If something creates an unpleasant state of consciousness (such as torturing a baby, creates in the baby), this is immoral. If something created a pleasant state of consciousness (such as providing a scholarship for a talented blind pianist to study at a music school) then this is moral.

If animals can contain consciousness of similar quality to human (and this is a scientific question), then the same issue generalizes as for other people.

Again this is in the permanent or “deep” sense of moral. Not in the sense of “custom”, which is something more temporary and contingent on stage of history, country, etc.

  76. Thorfinnsson says

This is a strange teleological argument. It might be binding if you believe in Old Testament texts which claim this. But actually there is no such purpose or design in nature.

It is in fact an empirical statement. Owing to the proliferation of humans and our technological development, wilderness only remains where we have decided it should remain. As such wild animals that still exist simply exist because humans have decided they should exist.

In industrialized societies there are now projects to reintroduce previously dangerous predators such as wolves and brown bears. This is done as a form of luxury consumption. Humans are (mostly) no longer threatened by such animals, so they are brought back because the possibility to observe them brings humans enjoyment.

Voluntarily vegetarianism and veganism is no different. People unable to control their feelings of compassion choose to forego the consumption of meat and other animal products in order to improve their perceived emotional well-being. This is a conscious rejection of what it means to be human, and therefore such people forfeit their right to exist and should be executed.

No it doesn’t. It comes from increased knowledge of reality. We can observe consciousness or “soul” in ourselves, and that our deeper sense of good and evil is derived from this.

Currently, we can probably go for some time with the idea that our human consciousness is qualitatively more refined and interesting than that of an animal, and therefore it should have priority including in meat consumption.

The existence of consciousness in animals is obvious. It is also completely irrelevant.

This is the exact same sort of logic that was used to rationalize giving negroes, females, homo-sexuals, etc. equality.

Social relations should not be predicated based upon the capacity of organisms to feel, but rather according to hierarchical principles. Animals are lower than humans, and accordingly exist to serve us. This law of nature cannot be overthrown, only channeled into making animals (or whatever other inferior group you care to dote on) into protected pets of a politically dominant class of humans who are unable to control their feelings of compassion.

But this is probably only a historically temporary position. After it becomes easy to engineer meat, then the societal view will also shift.

You are probably correct, and in that case the new societal view will be objectively wrong. This is why leftism must be forever eradicated as a force in human affairs.

This is a result of your social conditioning and because in your culture these views signal certain things which seem to be desirable to you.

But of course, in the interesting sense concepts like “fundamentally immoral” are not a result of customs and political pose. It is a result of states of consciousness. This is an effeminate and childish way of viewing morality and the world. It’s leftism, and you should be executed.

  80. an empirical statement.

It is just a teleological assertion, which is a phantom which has come from your culture, but has no necessary existence outside it (i.e. in the real observer-independent world).

This is a conscious rejection of what it means to be human,

What is “rejection of what it means to be human”?

Answer to question “what it means to be human?” – will always be a subjective view. And common for humans, is to disagree between each other about their subjective views.

logic that was used to rationalize giving negroes, females, homo-sexuals, etc. equality.

Question of political equality is complicated and contingent on complex systems. In some of these systems, the popular answer will be different than in others.

It could be possible that women or homosexuals, will be better without being able to vote – for example, in a society which is ruled by only the most intelligent men.

On the other hand, it is probably not possible that women or homosexuals would be happier if you put them in a battery farm and killed them for their meat. And with animals, something very similar will likely be true.

The issue to remember here is that the consciousness itself is something observer independent, or that exists in nature independently of being observed.

Whereas concepts like “equality”- are just observer-dependent phantoms, and have no existence in the real world.

Animals are lower than humans, and accordingly exist to serve us. This law of nature cannot be overthrown, only channeled into making animals

Sadly, this is just a subjective view. If such views were idiosyncratic, then they would only be interesting for us to the extent you might be able to enforce it on other people, or to the extent we might be interested in you biographically (e.g. if you were an author and I wanted to understand your perspective to access the great novel you have written). Alternatively, it might be interesting if it reflected something in the current historical stage or technological level (which is what your views seem to reflect).

For example, when man achieves the technological level to kill a woolly mammoth, then this kind of view would have emerged (that man is above the other animals). While when the technological level was not adequate to this, man would probably have believed the woolly mammoth was above him.

But in nature itself, there do not exist these categories, or concepts of higher and lower. There’s no particular view that one animal should “serve” another (the concept of “serve” itself has no sense outside of low intelligence level of human culture). A simple Chinese man might think sharks are designed to serve their soups. But a European will disagree. And indeed a shark might still sometimes reverse the order and eat the Chinese man that forgot his technology and goes into the sea without a boat.

Humans when they begin to hunt animals larger than itself, were in fact rebelling against such an idea of hierarchy via technology means.

Woolly mammoth might seem far higher than a human, until we realize that we can “cheat” with some technology and make a spear.

This is an effeminate and childish way of viewing morality and the world. It’s leftism, and you should be executed.

Lol here these emotional views and political posing. There is no necessary connection to “leftism” or “effeminate”, except within determinants of the early American 21st culture, which can always comically reverse in different epochs. For example, we know the Nazis’ obsession about animal welfare.

Of course, Schopenhauer was not interpreted as “leftism” either in the 19th century. I wonder when this connection has developed. I guess a lot is related prevalence of meat and healthy diets in the post-war era, when meat becomes so widely available in developed countries.

In another epoch, when meat is produced in vats, the connotations will change again.

  81. What a disgrace – nothing shows up the brainwashing of people and the utter moral bankruptcy of the world and anti-Serbian thuggery…..than the shocking lack of FIFA awards and respect to the best footballer in the world last season, the Serbian, Dushan Tadic ,who was the star for Ajax

Dushan Tadic. Easily deserving of being in the “Best Eleven” Team, just as deserving as being in the top 3 and the best player in the world. He got f**k all – I dont think even an invitation to the awards ceremony.

To make it worse, the Croat, Modric ( genuinely great player) gets in the best Eleven even though he and Real Madrid had a shocking season and he won the best player awards last year with a standard not as high as Tadic this season ( I did not think Modric or Croatia were particularly good at the 2018 World Cup even though they got to the final)

  82. People unable to control their feelings of compassion choose to forego the consumption of meat and other animal products in order to improve their perceived emotional well-being.

This is probably one reason some choose to forego eating meat. There could be several other reasons. One might have no qualms with the idea of eating meat, however, feel that it’s healthier to forego it. Some may not appreciate meat’s aesthetic properties, or possibly not like the way meat tastes.

This is a conscious rejection of what it means to be human, and therefore such people forfeit their right to exist and should be executed.

Climate change isn’t just about rising sea levels. A big problem for the movement is that you had people who were pretty hysterical at times in their tone. James Hansen’s more infamous quotes about manhattan being underwater shortly made him an easy target. It also obscured that most of what he said was reasonable.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVz67cwmxTM

I make a comparison here to immigration activists. Many of the earliest ones were saying extreme things. Take Enoch Powell. His quote about the “black man having the whip hand over the white man” is obviously bullshit. It was a shock quote intended to shake people out of complacency, but it also had the risk of making him look unhinged (which it did, same with James Hansen). Yet his fundamental analysis was not wrong. In fact, Enoch’s demographic estimate for the year 2000 was almost spot on in terms of racial dynamics. The same thing can be said about early climate change actisits.

Beyond rising sea levels, you also have the issue of uneven distribution of rains. In India, the amount of monsoon water they get has declined, but not massively. What has changed is that they used to get a more evenly distributed share of rain over the entire season. Now they get a lot more rain squeezed into a far fewer raining days, and this has led to crisis.

Even in Europe, part of the problem for Germany has been the collapsing water levels of the Rhine. Bloomberg had a good article on it this summer:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-07-23/the-rhine-river-risks-a-repeat-of-last-year-s-historic-shutdown

Last year wasn’t a one-off. It seems this is the new normal. The rhine river is critically important for Germany’s industrial backbone. It is a key pathway for shipping goods between various companies situated along the river. The economic damage done is far stronger than the mellow forecasts had predicted. And much soooner. Changing deep patterns/pathways quickly will not be easy. In other countries, power generation is under threat because of the same water scarcity problems, particularly in some of the V4 states with a high share of coal generation. There’s much more to be said, I’ve only touched on a tiny slice relating to water issues. Climate change is real, it is happening, and people here whining about Greta’s asperger, and in this way dismissing the issue, are just revealing themselves to be ignorant. Both of the issue as well as of asperger.

For those of you who are developers, into technology, Google is now offering free lessons on Kotlin. Kotlin is a relatively new programming language which is intended to supercede Java, and Google wants people to use that instead. You can get free lessons here:

    https://codelabs.developers.google.com/kotlin-bootcamp/

    https://www.udacity.com/course/developing-android-apps-with-kotlin–ud9012

This is a big deal. The Android app ecossytem is obviously huge and for Google to officially promote another language over Java like this is pretty notable given the huge amount of sway Google has in the tech world. Kotlin is interoperable with Java, so the transmission should be smoothed by that.

Fun curiosity: it was developed in Prague by a bunch of Russians. You could probably guess that if you live near St. Petersburg. “Kotlin” is an island near the city. Shows that there is a trememndous amount of tech talent in EE. It also shows that much of this tech talent is not doing productive stuff given that the region has produced relatively few startups of note, probably in part due to massive brain drain.

  86. “Climate change is real” – really? The global temperature indeed increases. We have satellites that can measure the true global temperature for only 40 years. All other estimates for say, 19 century are questionable.

The UAH temperature show increase of 0.5° C in 40 years:

    https://www.drroyspencer.com/wp-content/uploads/UAH_LT_1979_thru_August_2019_v6.jpg

This does not seem to be that much. How much of it is anthropogenic is another question.

Which countries pose the greatest threat do the growth of CO2 emissions? Probably China and India and Africa.

The ocean level growth is very small.

All what we get form the activists and large segment of scientists is hysteria. Exaggerations and many counter scientific claims. They can’t be taken too seriously. Them drafting poor little Greta Thunberg as a shock troop is disgusting. Perhaps if they suffocate her with CO2 or drowned her and dropped her on the beach the impact would be greater:

The rhine river is critically important for Germany’s industrial backbone.

Well, if “Green” policies manage to deindustrialize Germany, that won’t be much of a problem anymore.
I’m not dismissing climate change at all, I actually do think it is a serious issue. The question is what can and should be done about it. I can’t remember you making many concrete proposals apart from the suggestion that we should all start eating insects because cows produce too much methane or whatever. And that kind of stuff will never be a vote-winner among people attracted to right-wing causes. Because many people sense, imo correctly, that it’s not least about social control by well-off progressives (post-materialism is an attitude you have to be able to afford, it’s not attractive if you’re struggling to get by anyway or concerned about decline in your social status) who see it as their mission to reeducate the rest of the population, similarly to “antiracism” and other pet causes of the left.

and people here whining about Greta’s asperger, and in this way dismissing the issue, are just revealing themselves to be ignorant. Both of the issue as well as of asperger.

That astroturfed Greta cult creepy as hell (and potentially dangerous in its quasi-religious self-righteousness), imo it’s naive to assume this is simply about some kids concerned about the environment.
And while people suffering from Asperger’s probably deserve some sympathy, imo their judgement is clearly impaired and should be given correspondingly less weight.

  90. …Asperger’s probably deserve some sympathy, imo their judgement is clearly impaired

Actually Asperger doesn’t impact judgment per se, only the expression of that judgment. Given that in a social situation those are the same thing, we can only judge Greta on what she says. What she is clearly suffering from is a low level hysteria. Her family background is rather interesting: a high class, aspirational, broken family – that often leads to children being unhinged and forcing the boundaries of everything. There is probably also some alcohol and Weimar-like behaviour that played a part.

The other possibility is that Greta is a random, clear-headed prophet and we are all going to sink under the water. And, of course, Rhine will go dry and the chemical sh..t from Basel will have to wait for the slow Swiss trains. I will take my chances. Less evenly distributed rainfall, or India overrun by insects (again), I think we can live with that.

I’m familiar with some versions of it, just didn’t want to open that can of worms. Some people even within the “science-loving” crowd are extremely uncomfortable with an idea that their big brain might be meant to survive the damage from too much diving, and everything else (civilization, culture, cat memes…) might as well be an accidental by-product.

  115. Article about the exploited Greta who is the heart of this circus:

    https://quillette.com/2019/04/23/self-harm-versus-the-greater-good-greta-thunberg-and-child-activism/

Greta is eleven years old and has gone two months without eating. Her heart rate and blood pressure show clear signs of starvation. She has stopped speaking to anyone but her parents and younger sister, Beata.

After years of depression, eating disorders, and anxiety attacks, she finally receives a medical diagnosis: Asperger’s syndrome, high-functioning autism, and OCD. She also suffers from selective mutism—which explains why she sometimes can’t speak to anyone outside her closest family. When she wants to tell a climate researcher that she plans a school strike on behalf of the environment, she speaks through her father.

The book Scenes from the Heart (“Scener från Hjärtat,” 2018) recounts these medical difficulties and the events that led to Greta Thunberg’s now-famous “school strike for climate,” in which hundreds of thousands of children have refused to attend school to protest about government inaction over climate change. Greta herself strikes every Friday and spent three weeks sitting outside the Swedish Parliament at the beginning of the school year. Written by her family—mother, father, Beata and Greta—the story is told in the voice of Greta’s mother, the opera soprano Malena Ernman, who was a celebrity in Europe long before her daughter’s fame. Although the book is only available in Swedish for the time being, it is already being translated into numerous languages—a development that reflects the global fascination with Thunberg’s campaign.

We are offered a story of “a family in crisis and a planet in crisis”—two phenomena that are presented as inextricably linked. The book posits that oppression of women, minorities, and people with disabilities stem from the same overarching root problem as climate change: an unsustainable way of life. The family’s private crisis and the global climate crisis, the authors argue, are simply symptoms of the same systemic disorder.

Greta is not alone in her mental suffering, according to the book. Her sister Beata, who was 12 when the book was written, lives with ADHD, Asperger’s syndrome, and OCD. She is prone to sudden outbursts of anger, during which she screams obscenities at her mother. What would normally be a 10-minute walk to dance class takes almost an hour because Beata insists on walking with her left foot in front, refuses to step on certain parts of the sidewalk, and demands that her mother walk the same way. She also insists that her mother wait outside during class—she isn’t allowed to move, even to go to the bathroom. The child still ends up weeping in her mother’s arms.

Because many people sense, imo correctly, that it’s not least about social control by well-off progressives (post-materialism is an attitude you have to be able to afford, it’s not attractive if you’re struggling to get by anyway or concerned about decline in your social status) who see it as their mission to reeducate the rest of the population

And this is wrong how exactly? Most people left to their own basest instincts will revert to the jungle. You should read Heiner Rindermann’s book on cognitive capitalism. I can only classify as a lexicon of sorts for HBD. It is a book that is packed with minute detail on everything relating to HBD (and then some) with precision that is astounding.

One of the many interesting things that I learnt from the book is that more intelligent truly are more moral. This difference is even true for politicians but especially in more ‘normal’ occupations.

The collective morality of the masses is lacking and regressive. There is no need to put a lipstick on a pig. But I should add that I do not believe in coercion, only in mass education. Paternalism needs to make a formal comeback and cognitive elites should be open about it.

I’m not dismissing climate change at all, I actually do think it is a serious issue.

You are literally spending all your time here propagating against it, bringing up talking points straight out of the AfD playbook. If you’re concerned about it, you have a funny way of showing it. And the scaremongering about deindustrialisation is bogus. As the article from Bloomberg pointed out, the huge negative impact on German industry this summer and last was in large part due to shockingly low water levels of the rhine, which in turn is linked to negative climate change effects. I haven’t seen you adress any of this, contrary to your posturing of claiming to care otherwise about climate change. It also pierces your deindustrialisation argument. The two are linked. Combatting climate change will help, not stymie, German industry.

it’s naive to assume this is simply about some kids concerned about the environment.

I will allow for the fact that some people are using her. So what? I would throw it back at you and say it naïve to think that people aged 16 can’t deeply care for social and political issues. And the overly obsessive focus on Greta is a clown circus in my opinion. The issue is far deeper and far more serious. But the media focuses on her, whether pro- or anti-Greta, because most people don’t have the time or energy to get into the science. They prefer to just comment on the spectacle of the politics. The media is easily blamed but they just respond to what sells.

And while people suffering from Asperger’s probably deserve some sympathy, imo their judgement is clearly impaired and should be given correspondingly less weight.

And you base this on what? Some knee-jerk instinct you have without any scientific analysis? Seems just like blind and stupid prejudice.

Most of the responses ranged from defeatist fatalism to vapid and empty ironybro-posting.

Well, mystery solved. Seems the left’s cultural victories in the social section of our society is so complete that even the so-called “far-right” doesn’t even bother to put up a fight against any of it. As I said somewhat sarcastically; “nothing more than racist liberatarians”.

A lot of people rejoiced when Jordan Peterson’s daughter announced, likely with his approval, that he was sent into rehab for pill-popping, as if this was somehow an argument against him politically. I never understood this.

Do these folks really believe that people in position of fame are somehow indestructable? There is plenty to criticise Peterson for. His childish conception of civic nationalism and “radical individualism” has manifestly failed in Western socities. He was propagated as somekind of “dark enlightenement intellectual” when most of his advice was just what your mom told you at age 9.

That said, when someone like that goes into rehab they deserve our sympathy and not our scorn. People are frail. I have had people in my family who died out of alcoholism and drugs. I have seen up close how it can tear families apart. People should criticise his political stances, which are laughable, and not attack him on his weaknesses of character. In some ways, it is even brave to admit to weakness so publicly. Many would cover it, to carry on with a false façade.

And I think that we should make a concerted effort to make much more use of solar power where appropriate, move power plants gradually from fossil fuels to nuclear, move vehicles from pure gas-burning to hybrid, to plug-in hybrid, to full electric, as government and household resources permit.

But these things need to be done gradually, without crippling our economies and reflexively taking away freedom. Because the ones who will do the reeducating are the enemy, so moral that they will put the interest of the foreign masses above the interests of their fellow countrymen (but not their own class, of course).

As the article from Bloomberg pointed out, the huge negative impact on German industry this summer and last was in large part due to shockingly low water levels of the rhine

And another big factor was related to what happened to the car industry which was under increasing pressure by new emissions standards and the Green lobby.

Combatting climate change will help, not stymie, German industry.

    Wishful thinking.

Germany’s most important, the car industry is not going to benefit from this.
Even if they manage to retain their market share in eletric cars era, many German workers are going to lose their jobs.

  124. Are northwestern Europeans more prone to ‘end of world’ hysteria than everyone else? I don’t know much about the history of this topic but it seems like it. Too much introspection and guilt or something like that.

Even during the Cold War the anti-nuclear sentiment was different in Italy and Spain where it had more to do with anti-Americanism and/or cynical political agitation. In Germany, the Netherlands, and Anglo countries it was more emotional, even religious in nature. Today it seems most countries are only grifting on climate change whilst the N-W Euros are genuine believers.

  125. German_reader says

And the scaremongering about deindustrialisation is bogus.

It isn’t bogus at all, “Green” policies in Germany (leaving both nuclear and coal power) are eroding energy security and pushing up prices to prohibitive levels…do you think there’s some law that industries will just stay put in a country where high costs and intermittent cut-offs of energy (has already happened several times to the aluminium industry in North-Rhine-Westphalia) make their operations less and less profitable?
As for your ideas about “elites” reeducating the immoral masses, lol, that’s touching naivete given the disastrous track record of those “elites” (which in the case of German Greens at the top levels often consist of people who have such “qualifications” as having studied a few semesters of theology without ever getting a degree, or intercultural communications, or similar nonsense).

    Yes

  128. Thorfinnsson says

It is just a teleological assertion, which is a phantom which has come from your culture, but has no necessary existence outside it (i.e. in the real observer-independent world).

This is a very strange remark. I come from the culture which produced the Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat products and has numerous laws and cultural practices intended to protect animal welfare. And animal worship is intensifying here, not regressing.

What is “rejection of what it means to be human”?

Answer to question “what it means to be human?” – will always be a subjective view. And common for humans, is to disagree between each other about their subjective views.

Rejection of the use of animal products is a rejection of what i means to be human, as previously stated. That we evolved to become apex predators is an empirical statement, not subjective.

That said, I will grant that we also evolved the ability to invent and use technology, and some humans use this technology to partially forego animal products. These people are of course scum.

You’re again demonstrating your effeminate, leftist way of thinking. Rather than considering what is in your own interests, you’re considering the interests of women and homo-sexuals.

Returning to animals, the fact that animals may suffer in battery farms is irrelevant for the simple reason that we are not animals. Humans with a preference for higher animal welfare are already able to express this preference in the marketplace by purchasing more expensive animal products.

Unfortunately, these humans routinely confuse their own preferences with social needs.

Mammoths and other pachyderms are not predators, so they were never above hominids per se. But certainly humans had to develop technology and hunting techniques in order to decisively defeat the mammoths once and for all, which was accomplished.

The simple Chinese man is correct, though sharks also produce other valuable products such as sharkskin. Sharks of course also have tourism value.

America is not the Soviet Union, and meat has always been widely available here.

It is true that the Nazis inverted the usual practice on this, but indeed in today’s epoch the same people who worship animals nearly always worship homo-sexuals and negroes.

  129. Thorfinnsson says

This is also wrong. Any attempt to define human-animal moral boundaries on the basis of the capacities of animals is wrong and creates wiggle room for animal worshippers to carve out sacred animals we can’t eat or turn into leather.

It’s a simple who-whom question. We do not have obligations to non-human animals for the simple reason that they are not us.

  130. Thulean Friend says

“Green” policies in Germany (leaving both nuclear and coal power) are eroding energy security

That has nothing to do with climate change. It has everything to do with Fukushima and the political fallout from that event. Nuclear power is the best energy source we have right now. Renewable energy is increasing rapidly, but it is intermittent in nature. Coal and gas are baseload power. Only clean baseload power that can be built at large scale, cheaply and with minimal emissions is atomic power.

There are many climate acitivsts, including the co-founder of Greenpeace and Bill Gates, among others, who are pro-nuclear. The fact that German Greens are idiots can’t be an argument against climate change.

  131. Thulean Friend says

The Energiwende is mostly a done deal now anyway.

    https://i.imgur.com/36aamQm.png

But the legacy of that is that Germany has some of the highest energy costs in Europe.

    https://i.imgur.com/wFKhpiA.png

Norway does very well, but then they are blessed with nearly all hydro. The same is true to an extent for Finland and Sweden, where hydro forms a big part of our grid. Hydro can’t be scaled across the world, so it is a non-solution on a global scale. The Netherlands also has low costs, but their grid is very dirty and polluted. France shows that you can combine reasonably low costs with low emissions, without the “luxury” of hydro. I honestly do not understand atomophobia.

Once again: this is not an argument against climate change. The deindustrialisation argument is complete bogus. It’s an argument against stupid energy policies, like Germany’s. We can’t be held hostage to the fact that Germans are too stupid to make good energy policies. It’s perfectly possible to have low energy costs and low emissions.

  132. The problem is that the pro-nuclear climate activists seems to have a lot of less influence than their anti-nuclear counter parts.

That is why we get something like this:

The European Parliament voted on a proposed classification for sustainable assets on Thursday (28 March), voting to exclude nuclear power from receiving a green stamp of approval on financial markets.

The text voted in Parliament also excludes fossil fuels and gas infrastructure from the EU’s proposed green finance taxonomy, which aims to divert investments away from polluting industries into clean technologies.

Tabled a year ago, the green taxonomy is the most sensitive part of a European Commission plan on sustainable finance, which aims at shifting financial flows towards the decarbonisation of the economy.

When he presented the proposal in May 2018, Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis underlined that financing the energy transition cannot be financed with public money alone. The Commission sustainable finance plan is therefore meant as a lever to bring sustainability out of the niche market where it currently stands, he stressed.

There is no reason for electricity to cost more than ten cents per kWh anywhere.

Pricing in places like Norway, France, Sweden, etc. are particularly inexcusable.

  136. Nuclear is the ideal base

Use of new nuclear power plants is not (very) cost-effective and not nimble (to establish new plant is slow).

Combined cycle power plant with gas is the ideal.

    https://i.imgur.com/OT1yjUc.jpg

    https://www.lazard.com/media/450784/lazards-levelized-cost-of-energy-version-120-vfinal.pdf

Recall that some very expensive costs of nuclear energy are hidden, and only now the government is beginning to expend on this. (disposal contracts in Krasnoyarsk for high-level waste).

It is clear why nuclear power station construction have a rapid increase in capacity between 1970-1990, and then have stagnated since this time, despite improvements in the technology.

It’s more useful, due to energy security viewpoint, for countries without supply of gas. But now expansion of LNG industry will result in increasing domination for gas even to countries without domestic supplies, or adequate pipeline infrastructure.

  137. your feral women murder your progeny

When abortion happens in the West it’s usually among the lumpenproletariat, we don’t think of it as “the figurative progeny of our great nation” being aborted. As for the literal fathers of the kids getting aborted, they are usually side-by-side encouraging the mothers to go through with the process.

  138. “Atomophobia” – would refer to someone who is scared of everything, as atoms constitute all matter we interact with.

You mean people who are scared of nuclear power plants for electricity?

On balance (around the world), nuclear power plants have not been very dangerous, and the latest ones will be safer.

The rational reason for scared – is mainly by high cost (especially including hidden future costs), slow establishment, and the usually bad choice when we have so much gas to burn in the world, and it can be converted it to electricity with 60% efficiency.

  141. Looking at the Nordic power grid, the price per MWh at 22.00 tonight was 36.23 euro in Sweden and 44.64 euro in Lithuania. Yet Sweden apparently has almost twice the cost per KWh to the consumer. Literally at the time of writing, Sweden is exporting 3.1 TW to its neighbors. The integration of the European power markets certainly have increased the Swedish prices.

I have however found that, as a consumer, the main power cost in practice seems to be the fixed ‘grid fee’ charged by the power providers. The variable per-KWh cost is usually just a fraction of that.

  142. Thorfinnsson says

  144. Lol, I could only bear a very short period myself before I got massively triggered and had to change the channels. (Proudly displayed on Swedish government TV, of course.)

  145. from the Swedish perspective, where “climate” is of much greater religious importance than it is in many other Western countries.

The Swedish contribution to global temperature is of course minuscule, but that approach doesn’t seem to take when I advance it. I occasionally mention that whites are only about one billion of the seven and a half billion people around, just to see what happens. Usually it’s crimestop but perhaps some of the seeds will flower.

  146. Nah, Tadić is playing in a crappy league and played his worst game when it mattered the most – versus Tottenham.

The inferior league issue makes Ajax’s achievement in Europe even better, in my opinion.
As for Tottenham ( and Liverpool) two shit and shithole English clubs who got lucky. Ajax had practically won the game, proven they were better, and with the pressure completely off and big lead, they all relaxed, and the loser English team got lucky.

As for Tadic……he basically played like Platini/Zico and Nedved all in one. Juventus would have comfortably annihilated Liverpool and Spurs ( against Manchester City would have been a great match)….Ajax deservedly beat Juve. As for Real Madrid – not many teams have destroyed Real in Madrid like that before as Ajax did. Tadic was very much the star.

….but no excuse for him not making the best eleven.
Going back to the inferior league issue…….Shakhtar Donetsk easily had teams capable of winning the European Cup between 2004-2012, as evidenced by the many high quality Brazilian players there who have gone to the big teams in Europe

  147. In my experience, the people who worship Greta also worship Billie Eilish (MK-Ultra victim who is being promoted as “the new face of pop music”).

On a more relevant note, Greta’s age and her disability (autism) enable the Left to call you “sexist” and “ableist” if you try to counter anything she says.

  148. The Swedish contribution to global temperature is of course minuscule

That’s an understatement, it’s downright irrelevant when compared to just one of the bigger polluters
Swedes metaphorically flagelating themselves by no longer eating meat will quite literally change nothing, it’s just more bs to distract them from the grenade attacks

  149. Sweden is exporting 3.1 TW

(Power export was about 3100 MWs, i.e., 3.1 GW; apologies for the small error of 1000x.)

  150. I’m told the annual global CO2-emissions growth is larger than the total CO2-emissions of Sweden, possibly integer factors larger. So in that case, I guess even going down to zero won’t help a lot. If this problem has to be solved, it won’t be done in Sweden.

Though we could of course do our part by not turning low-CO2 third world migrants into high-CO2 Swedes. Just a suggestion, dear countrymen.

  153. The other reasons are also all wrong, and such people should be shunned at minimum.

They don’t bother me in the least. Why are you so uptight about vegetararians?

That said the Book of Genesis informs humans that God has given us dominion over the Earth. So from an Abrahamic point of view animal worshippers are also defying God.

You’re jumping to conclusions here. Why equate vegetariansim with “animal worship”? Also, I don’t see anywhere in the Bible where God is expecting his human creation to eat meat? Allowing it is not necessarily promoting it.

  154. Thorfinnsson says

They don’t bother me in the least. Why are you so uptight about vegetararians?

It’s instinctive in me. When I was a boy and first learned of the existence of vegetarians I immediately hated them without knowing why.

Later on when I learned that they are wrong about nutrition, generally worship animals, and are mostly left-wing my hatred was strengthened.

Beyond that there are practical reasons to oppose them, because they’re not content to enjoy their deranged diets in peace. They seek to push them on other people, and not merely just through peaceful conversion. WeWork for instance banned reimbursing meat for employee lunches, and New York Public Schools has converted two elementary schools to “plant-based” menus. The latest crock is that ruminants, an essential part of the soil cycle, are to blame for climate change.

You’re jumping to conclusions here. Why equate vegetariansim with “animal worship”?

    It’s deliberately insulting.

Also, I don’t see anywhere in the Bible where God is expecting his human creation to eat meat? Allowing it is not necessarily promoting it.

The same God that issued very specific instructions on how to slaughter animals, which animals not to eat, and which foods not to consume with meat clearly expected the Israelites to eat meat. Just not with cheese for whatever reason…

The fact that white people are a much smaller share of the global population is not a strong argument because white countries are highly industrialised with very few exceptions, so our per capita emissions are much greater. That means that are aggregate emissions are also far higher than our population share alone would suggest. Even if China is a bigger aggregate polluter, it doesn’t change the fact that Western countries are huge contributors to emissions themselves. You can’t solve only one, you need both pieces.

More fundamentally, the argument also contains a nonsensical zero-sum component. Why should anyone make an arbitrary choice between cleaning in front of your own door and making sure the others are, too. This planet is a shared space. Our political borders are irrelevant to mother nature. I think there is a lazy assumption at play that Europe won’t be much affected by climate change. I’ve seen maps showing that the impact will be mostly neutral on Central Europe and even positive on Northern Europe.

First, the major troubles that German industry faced due to low water levels, in turn caused by abnormally high temperatures, has already exposed this as a lie at worst or a naïve forecast gone wrong at best. Second, beyond climate effects there are also going to be huge population pressures at play. The hardest hit countries by climate change will be severely destabilised and this will push many more people towards (relatively) safer, more stable places, which usually means going further up north. And as I pointed out previously, commenters on anonymous internet forums and blogs sections who think we can shoot tens of millions of people are nothing more than delusional LARPers.

  157. silviosilver says

It’s instinctive in me. When I was a boy and first learned of the existence of vegetarians I immediately hated them without knowing why.

Later on when I learned that they are wrong about nutrition, generally worship animals, and are mostly left-wing my hatred was strengthened.

I can relate to this. When I first heard of vegetarianism as a kid, it was explained to me in terms of health concerns. I was deeply skeptical of this, without having any good reason to be. Somehow between then and my mid-teen years, I developed a hatred for people who were vegetarians that was quite apart from any health claims they made about their diet. Later on, when I heard of a special class of vegetarian that opposed all animal products – vegans – and not necessarily for health reasons, but because it was “wrong” to eat animals, my hatred was off the charts. It was hugely invigorating to learn that these faggots were actually wrong about their health claims.

Still, for all that, I think vegans have a case about excessive cruelty to animals marked for slaughter. It doesn’t – and won’t – stop me eating meat, but it doesn’t sit well with me to think of animals who never had any real shot at “freedom” and/or who are killed at a disturbingly young age. Battery hens are the best/worst example of this. Even as a kid I was disturbed the first time I saw this set up with my own eyes. Nothing will ever convince that eating meat is wrong – I could justify shooting vegans before I could justify banning meat – but I think improvements could and should be made to the way animals are treated prior to slaughtering them, even if it means paying up a little.

My bad for the double post, delete this and the double post when appropriate please AK.

  161. The fact that white people are a much smaller share of the global population is not a strong argument because white countries are highly industrialised with very few exceptions,

For starters, you need to consider that the rest of the world wants at least the same standards as whitey. So for instance “The hardest hit countries by climate change will be severely destabilised and this will push many more people towards”, note that the migration is already ongoing but because dey asylum seekers just want a better life.

The third world population for a century has been, and still is, skyrocketing and at a guess they are exporting their surplus population for that reason (and also because it works), not because of some gassy climate change program. Afghanistan and Iraq have increased their populations by about 50% since 9/11 and now they turn up at the so-called border, imperiously holding their hands out. Likewise for the rest.

so our per capita emissions are much greater.

A post-industrial society need not generate a lot of emissions. For example, if our industrial production has been outsourced and globalized, we simply import the stuff instead of manufacturing it, just like any third world country.

Furthermore, Sweden already generates 90% or more of its power from non-CO2 sources and dedicates vast areas to binding CO2 (known as forests). We are even shutting down clean non-CO2 energy production and have been doing so for a number of years.

I’d thus expect we are already far ahead of the game, even should one consider the game to be worth playing. There is no crisis. Instead, it’s the usual elite Swedish neuroticism and grandiosity.

  162. More fundamentally, the argument also contains a nonsensical zero-sum component. Why should anyone make an arbitrary choice between cleaning in front of your own door and making sure the others are, too. This planet is a shared space. Our political borders are irrelevant to mother nature.

Certainly not. Let us say the world CO2-emissions consist of two factors, Sweden (0.01) and the Rest (0.99). You want to reduce CO2-emissions to 0.50. Even if the Sweden factor is reduced to 0.0, you still have 0.49 to go. Thus, you should focus your efforts on reducing the CO2-emissions where it makes the greatest difference.

But then the whole ‘climate change’ zealotry may be bullshit too. The argument above disregards that, even though one might hope our elites would be more prudent.

I think there is a lazy assumption at play that Europe won’t be much affected by climate change. I’ve seen maps showing that the impact will be mostly neutral on Central Europe and even positive on Northern Europe.

So it might be good for Scandinavia, but you think we desperately need to stop it? OK.

  163. And as I pointed out previously, commenters on anonymous internet forums and blogs sections who think we can shoot tens of millions of people are nothing more than delusional LARPers.

Well, they probably stop coming after the first few millions. But we have already had wars and suchlike that have killed tens of millions of people so it’s not like it’s an impossible, unprecedented fantasy. (Except, of course, we might no longer have the balls to defend ourselves.)

It is absolutely 146% his fault, and he deserves more than scorn, he deserves ostracism and a jail term.

  165. You want to reduce CO2-emissions to 0.50.

(Or you might presumably instead want to cap them at 0.50 of today, or wherever the boundary of Earth going up in flames is, which means a steadily shrinking amount of CO2-emissions per capita as world population grows. That might get problematic too, perhaps indeed more problematic, but I’ll leave the issue for another day.)

  166. anonymous coward says

When abortion happens in the West it’s usually among the lumpenproletariat, we don’t think of it as “the figurative progeny of our great nation” being aborted.

Yes, and that’s exactly why you’re now importing millions of third-world lumpenproletariat to work your menial jobs and paying protection racket money to the USA.

  167. anonymous coward says

Cuckoldry was supposed to be the next degeneracy to be normalized among straight couples after anal sex, and a few years ago the mainstream media was pushing it hard.

Then the internet incel troll brigade made cuckoldry into a joke and ‘cuck’ into a four-letter-word, and the campaign petered out. (Humor is a good way to defeat them, by the way.)

It seems like they’re still trying, but I don’t think they will get far. They work by volume and shouting out sane opinions, against a cunning opponent they have no clue how to proceed.

  168. commenters on anonymous internet forums and blogs sections who think we can shoot tens of millions of people are nothing more than delusional LARPers.

Westerners with feelz who think it will never come to this, for one reason or another, are the delusional LARPers. Some of us live in places that have no qualms contemplating, and preparing for, these types of contingencies. If the situation is truly as dire as you make it out to be, you should probably move to one of theses places. Moralistic preening on the internet will accomplish nothing.

  169. Thulean Friend says

People who casually make these kinds of comments, living in comfortable middle-class conditions and typing away in anonymity, have zero credibility. It’s the same phenomenom whenever there is an interracial hate crime covered up by the media, or some MENA rape gang go after some white girl, the comment section always gets inflamed. Even normies start to extopost. I’ve seen this all my life. It always comes to nothing. Self-appointed internet tough guys are complete frauds.

  170. Thulean Friend says

So it might be good for Scandinavia,

It might. Some of these predictions may also underplay the dangers. Sweden has seen extremely warm summers of late, and in a consecutive order, meaning it is a pattern and not a one-off. Forest fires are becoming more normal. I am less sanguine that everything will be smooth sailing. I’ve already mentioned Germany, where extremely warm summers are having a very negative impact on the Rhine’s water levels, and thus crushing industrial transportation links. Germany was supposed to be a “neutral” country according to these optimistic forecasts.

but you think we desperately need to stop it? OK.

More fundamentally, as I maintained before, even if Scandinavia were to make it just fine, our political borders are not the same as our geographic borders. Eurasia is a continous land mass. If you think we have a big refugee problem now, just wait when climate change makes some of these countries unhabitable. The northern gangetic plains already get 40-45 degrees celcius every summer these years. When the peaks go up even further and happen for longer, many will just pack their bags and flee. Water stress is another related issue. And your solution to this is close your eyes and say not our problem? It will be our problem, and it will land on our doorstep. Why not do everything to prevent it instead of waiting until it happens? Common sense is quite uncommon as our friend Mark Twain once observed.

This is a specious argument. It isn’t Sweden against the world. It will have to be a coalition of countries. India is a very poor country, yet is far more farsighted on climate change than the US or Australia is. India has one of the highest share of people believing that climate change is man-made, at 71%. It remains to be seen which coalition wins out. I ultimately believe that my coalition, those who take the issue seriously and are not in denial about it, will win. But the question is that of time. Winning five minutes to midnight is hardly a victory, save perhaps a phyrric one. Humans are short-sighted and lazy, and generally don’t do what is required unless there is no other way.

  171. Reduce your carbon footprint. Go back to India.

  172. The importance of Trump’s speech is understated.

The free world must embrace its national foundations. It must not attempt to erase them, or replace them. The true good of the nation, can only be pursued by those who love it, by citizens who are rooted in its history, who are nourished by its culture, committed to its values, attached to his people.

Patriots see a nation and its destiny in ways no one else can. Liberty is only preserved, sovereignty is only secure, democracy is only sustained, greatness is only realised by the will and devotion of patriots

The future does not belong to the globalists. The future belongs to patriots.

Looking around and all over this large, magnificent planet, the truth is plain to see. If you want freedom, take pride in your country. If you want democracy, hold on to your sovereignty. And if you want peace, love your nation. Wise leaders always put the good of their own people and their own country first.

One of the many interesting things that I learnt from the book is that more intelligent truly are more moral.

Well the so-called intelligentsia have elevated treason into the chief moral virtue, so how does that square with this idea? Anti-white, anti-Christian, and communistic progressivism is deeply entrenched in the intellectual class, whereas historically the intellectual class was very involved with theology and Christian virtue, so how is it that the intellectuals of different eras (let’s assume a relative parity of intellects here, though I consider the intellectual heavyweights of yesteryear considerably more impressive) reached such diametrically opposed moral conclusions? I don’t buy these as different steps on an arc of “moral progress”, these are diametrically opposed moral theories.

Furthermore, not having read Rinderman’s book, I’m thinking his proof of the moral superiority of the intelligent must be… what? His agreement with the moral principles of the educated class? If you throw out the truth of Christianity then that’s what any moral argument ultimately boils down to, and anyone might come up with an equally convincing proof of the opposite.

But let’s take even this exact scenario: the designated “bad guys” of the climate debate are massive global oil corps supposedly spreading disinformation to protect their profits. Sounds pretty immoral to me, so that means massively rich and successful oil executives are stupid, but retarded swedish children are smart?

More likely this is just a misreading of the fact that the intelligent also tend to be wealthier and thus have the luxury of time, will, and resources to more effectively impose their moral views on the rest of society. If anyone has the power to effectively define what is viewed as moral then then of course they look like moral paragons.

The media is easily blamed but they just respond to what sells.

So laughably wrong I reread it a few times to make sure I wasn’t misunderstanding it. You can’t seriously think that the media is covering the ranting of a mentally unstable child because she’s just so organically popular and people can’t get enough of her? Who do you think pushed her into celebrity?

And you base this on what? Some knee-jerk instinct you have without any scientific analysis? Seems just like blind and stupid prejudice.

Thinking that someone with mental problems might not have the clearest thinking is about as prejudiced as thinking a midget might have trouble reaching things. Seriously, what a load of nonsense, from someone who usually seems so reasonable. Regardless of the facts of the climate situation thunberg’s hysteria seems to be rubbing off on her fans.

I thought at first Ana Oppenheim belonged to Britain’s established Jewish minority, but she seems to be a Polish immigrant who came to Britain only in 2012 (but already wants to change it according to her preferences). So much for “based” Eastern Europeans saving decadent Northwestern Europeans from their universalistic impulses, lol.

  180. The black population was 10x smaller than the white in the 50s.

Today it is only about 4x less. I suspect we would have seen it hit 50% of the white population within the 2030s or have caused a complete American state collapse within this decade without abortion.

I don’t support abortion for ideological reasons as well but empirically speaking America is much better off with Asian and Hispanic immigrants who are much less powerful politically, inter marry and assimilate, and also don’t play the gang rape or kill whitey game.

  181. That same God also enjoined that we be especially kind to animals, as when it says you cannot tear off a limb from a live animal and eat it.

Not eating a kid in its mothers milk is another instance of being sensitive to animals – the general prohibition against cheese and meat is of later origin, and is only for the purpose of preventing mistakes.

Modern factory farming would be an abomination to this God.

There are also traditions which say eating meat is a concession to the fallen condition of man…one imagines man did not eat meat in the Garden of Eden.

It is possible that Oppenheims might not be representative of your average East European peasants. I have noticed that people with some sort of Slavic ancestry are passively overrepresented in British nationalist groups. Natural ethnocentrism coming through.

Despite the kvetching, Momentum is actually very Jewish. The leader, Jon Lansmann, is Jewish and three of the four founders were Jewish. An activist gave an interview in the Jewish Chronicle saying you wouldn’t believe how Jewish the organisation was.

  185. climate change is a overhiped threat to justify globalization and global governance

A global threat that we can only escape by reulling nationalisms and embracing a world government, transferring power to supranational organizations that will save us from catastrophe.
is a way of diluting differences in the face of the mythical task of saving the planet while the provincials who remain loyal to their nation are treated as traitors to humanity for putting their petty interests before global salvation.
This is the new religion for the swj and any person with revolutionary spirit who will nurture the unversitary classrooms in the next 30 years, manufactured by the elites to justify their domination.
The globalist elites not only control the official version but also manufacture their own opposition to drive any revolutionary ambition for their own ends.
    is all a gigantic lie.
to think of any movement and its central point
if in Nazism it was the race
    in capitalism money
in green movement is the planet and its salvation

is a political movement that armonize perfectly with the interests of the glovalist elites and helps to camouflage their true interests in the same way that they instrumentalize feminism or mass immigration under the cloak of moral superiority and in this moments of awakening of nationalism across the west could serve as a distraction

and of course I am in favor of defending nature but there are many more solutions than giving our freedom to a small elite that only wants ABSOLUTE POWER

  189. My friend, do not discount little Greta, as I did.

She is a very successful experiment in a) transnational social agitation and b) advancing the narrative from “climate change” to “climate crisis”.

She has in fact helped mobilized normally apathic young people around the world. Strikes on demand. The UN must “legislate”, then local governments can be pressured to enact that legislation. How convenient. Imagine the possibilities for other transnational issues like lgtb.

“Climate change” was a technical issue to be discussed, analyzed and evaluated by experts and the reading public. The climate crisis is everyone’s concern, nothing to discuss, damn the climate deniers. Spit at meat because it comes from cows. The time for action is now, but national governments are useless, inmoral. “The system must be changed, the power belongs to the people” (her words). Greta is a shift of the Overton window, a cue for population suppression and World Government..

For the past couple of days, I have been trying to point out to a large (200+) number of friends that Greta is a tool, a climate populist, that her mother should be ashamed of risking her mental health, that climate change is not scientifically clear, what are the main questions (is or is not, is man-made, is different from climate crisis, is difficult to administer.

All to no avail. All they see is a passionate, committed activist, that inspires their kids, that is doing the right thing, etc. Even from people that are anti-Chavez, and that routinely denounce demagogues. She has passionate defenders. Women especially are moved, and become protective.

This isn’t about internet tough guys or citizen action groups. The decision to shoot millions of unarmed civilians fleeing some kind of crisis, climate driven or otherwise, will be taken by the state, and they are the only ones with the capacity to act.

So, the question is, does your country have the political will and stomach to make that call? A country like China, for example, probably would, Sweden, probably not. So you’re left worshipping Greta Thunberg and raging helplessly on the internet. If you think the threat is real, move someplace that will be able to deal with the consequences when they happen. Glad to hear of brazil’s Low TFR, for environmental reasons among others.

But I wonder how that TFR breaks down by race in Brazil (understanding both that a far, far higher proportion of Brazilians are a mix of African and white european, in all shades, than in the USA, Canada, and other western countries, and that they accordingly have a different conception of who is “white”).

If we can find TFR stats by state in Brazil, that would help, as the white european population is everywhere but is concentrated in the south. I’ll look.

Something can only be done once the US withdraws from the region, meaning not any time soon, Russians ought to focus on Bulgaria and Romania then on these rascals, we Serbs will have to take care of Crna Gora

Crna Gora (Црна Гора), is Montenegros real name, they use the Italian “Montenegro” because using a literal translation would expose how fake of a country they are, it literally means Black Mountain and an ethnic Montenegrin is a “Black Mountain-er”
Quite an extreme case of a region giving the name to the people

  219. The names of things are often poorly translated to English
Great Rus is the area where the Slavic Rus people lived, today this is the Ukraine, Russia and Belarus trinity which is together refered to as Great Rus

There are several misunderstandings with the naming of things
Rus and Russia are often used interchangably by Anglos even if they aren’t by the Rus-ians themselves
The Russian word for Russia is “Rossiya” which is of Byzantine Greek origin, it was the Greek term for land of the Ros (Rus)
A Latinzed version of land of the Rus is Ruthenia, which is where you get Catholics calling Belarussia (White Russia) White Ruthenia
As for Ukraine, Ukraine consists of several different parts, all of which were part of the old Rus territories
Galicia which fell under Catholic influence and thus always felt distinct from the Orthodox Rus people, the core around Kiev which would be considered Ukraine proper (Sometimes refered to as Malorussia-Little Russia), and the Rus lands which fell to the Ottomans and were later reclaimed by the Russian Empire and titled Novorussia (New Russia)

Now large swathes of the Ukraine (whose name means “the Borderland”) were conquered by the Poles and Lithuanians and then conquered back by Russians, it was essentially the frontier of 2 European Empires and thus constantly torn
It had flirts with independence, usually when some Cossacks sided with an invading force against Russia but all ended in failure until 1991 when the current attempt began after Russia collapsed (again)

  220. My superficial impression of Brazil (not knowing much about it), is that their main problem* are high crime rates.

The eventual aging population (higher median age) that will follow in decades after the decline in fertility rates in Brazil, will be a strong downward pressure on crime rates.

Vast majority of crimes are by people aged 15-30 years.

In Russia, as median age has increased to almost 40, there has been a strong reduction in crime levels (although it is not only because of the higher median age, it is one of the causes for the reduction).

Median age in Brazil is around 32 years now (similar to Russia in the 1990s, although there was a public health crisis in the 1990s which has slowed increase in median age).

That said, aging could eventually have negative effects on Brazil’s economy and increase their dependency ratio, so the positive will also accompany a lot of negative with this issue – as discussed a many times on this forum.

    • Brazilian people also said to me the problem in the country is a terrible infrastructure and transportation level.
  221. terrible infrastructure and transportation level.

I just searched about this now. Apparently, there is even no train between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. (And the proposal for building one is frozen for many years).

So you have to go on a bus or plane if you will move between the cities of Brazil, even the famous ones.

  222. Greens are getting stronger everywhere. The Greta Thunberg publicity stunt orchestrated by the media and her unknown (at least to me) backers seems to be successful. The Green parties will obviously keep converting low emission third worlders into high emission Europeans.

The election results in Austria are truly terrible, much worse than expected.
Wouldn’t surprise me if that slimeball Kurz now enters into a coalition with the Greens. A ban of the identitarians which he already announced during his campaign seems likely now.
It’s really amazing how that astroturfed climate change campaign works on a lot of voters. Something similar happened with post-Fukushima nuclear hysteria in the German state of Baden-Württemberg in 2011 when the Greens got their first minister president. At this rate I think it’s quite possible that after the next federal elections there’ll be a Green chancellor in Germany.

  224. Yes, suddenly lots of climate rallies, people keep talking about it, sharing it on Facebook, etc. Probably even the truly idiotic campaign against the Brazilian forest fires was effective, because people vaguely remember the hysteria, but they have forgotten that the claims made during that campaign all proved false.

Unfortunately this is also a great argument against democracy.

By the way I sometimes feel that these are just test runs of later election engineering efforts by the media/tech/billionaire complex.

Also re-confirms my previous observations of right-wingers as being intellectually less able. Why get into the nitty gritty of climate science when you can just lash out against a 16 year old. Greta is a diversion. The issue of climate change at stake is real and is growing, with her or without her. That’s why Green parties are growing.

  229. OT: Book that has not been (and probably will not be) translated to English

Imperiofobia y leyenda negra: Roma, Rusia, Estados Unidos y el Imperio español by Elvira Roca Barea

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvira_Roca_Barea

The book is an essay, with a preface that declares that the author doesn’t plan on being exhaustive but on putting forward the lesser known information about various empires and their ideological rivals. Roca Barea coins the term “empire-phobia” to refer to a characteristic, repetitive process of demonization through distortion and magnification that all multi-cultural empires suffer by neighboring nations, given certain circumstances, and that follows a consistent pattern. She argues that the Spanish Black Legend is not a unique phenomenon, but a particularly persistent case of this broader phenomenon, which also affected other empires like ancient Rome and Ottoman Turkey, and is now affecting the modern United States, especially in the Islamic world.

In her book she offers a definition of both “empire” and “black legend”. She then shows the common elements and strategies shared by this discourse across nations and times, by deconstructing and exposing the similarities between the anti-American, anti-Russian, anti-Roman and anti-Spanish propaganda produced by their respective contemporaries, as well as the similarities in how the empires responded—or rather, did not respond.[4] This book has seen 18 editions in Spanish but has still to be translated to English.

Peruvian Nobel Prize Winner, Mario Vargas Llosa begins his review of the book (September, 2018) with the following statement:

Can a book of rigorous scholarship be entertained? Rarely, but it is in the case of Imperiophobia and black legend, by María Elvira Roca Barea, which I just finished. It is warlike, deep, controversial and reads without pause, like a police novel in which the reader flies over the pages to know who the murderer is. I confess that I haven’t read such a pleasant and stimulating book in a while.[7]

    According to Llosa,

“Roca Barea’s book is very well written, with elegant prose, pertinent arguments and at times a comical irony that attenuates the seriousness of the issues it deals with.”

  230. Thulean Friend says

Israel’s election came and went. I didn’t follow it too closely because Lieberman basically threw a hissy fit. The political situation has not materially changed. Netanyahu has an AG hearing in October about the bribes and the corruption, among other issues. He wanted to quickly form a government previously so he could exonorate himself. Gantz and Lieberman have both publicly raised the specter of a Likud palace coup to get rid of Netanyahu, which would smoothen the way for a unity government (Likud + B&W, and possibly a few more parties).

Netanyahu being the perennial survivor, has managed to get the first shot at forming a government. In some ways, whether he survives politically or not is not that important in the long run. To me, the most interesting part of the Israeli election was when Netanyahu panicked and proposed to annex large parts of the West Bank. Gantz, who is supposed to be the liberal moderate (or at the very least more liberal than Netanyahu), responded by boasting that Netyanyahu had stolen the idea from him. I seem to recall that Bennett was the one most associated with the idea a few years ago, but who cares about details right?

If Israel decides to annex large parts of the West Bank, it will be faced with a stark choice. Either it offers citizenship to the Palestinian/Arabs living there, further negatively altering the demographic composition of the electorate. Or it keeps them without citizenship but then it will be easier than ever to levy the accusation of Israel being an Apartheid state. The only other option would be a large ethnic cleansing campaign, but I find it doubtful that even a shabbos goyim administration like Trump’s would greenlight that. Still, Israel has had two large waves of ethnic cleansing before (48 and 67). Both of which were initiatived by Labour, supposedly leftist.

Some time ago I showed this chart:

    https://i.imgur.com/KiH3zH9.jpg

It underlines the demographic challenge Israel has. Within Jewry, it is getting far more religious and more fundamentalist. Lieberman’s hissy fit can and should be seen in this context. He is basically asking for a political realignment. The right-wing sector is now completely dependent on the religious parties (Shas and UTJ). Lieberman’s ask is for Likud to ditch them and go with B&W and him. That can perhaps work a few election cycles but demographics is destiny. And the settler vote keeps rising. Sooner or later, the orthodox will simply outbreed the Liebermans and the Russian bloc he represents (plus quite a few non-Russian secular hardliners).

If you are interested in the nitty-gritty, then http://www.knessetjeremy.com is a good resource.

  231. German_reader says

The issue of climate change at stake is real and is growing, with her or without her. That’s why Green parties are growing.

You’re bloody naive if you think this climate change movement is somehow just a natural or organic movement. It would go nowhere without the support of mass media which are constantly running stories of the “If we don’t do something now, the world will end in ten years!” kind, while ridiculing anybody concerned about the continuously escalating mass immigration (“replacement migration” is just a conspiracy theory, start wearing your tinfoil hat etc.). You really think it’s a natural process, when some mentally ill 16-year old and other teenagers supposedly start a movement that gets the attention of all the high and mighty, is invited by heads of state etc.? No, that’s total astroturf. I don’t know exactly what kind of interests are behind this, but it’s clear imo that this is a campaign pushed by powerful lobbies and designed to legitimate a restructuring of our societies along “progressive” lines…the children demand it after all!

Also re-confirms my previous observations of right-wingers as being intellectually less able.

I actually believe climate change is an issue (but that raises the question, what do we do about it, without wrecking industrial society), and have been usually annoyed by right-wingers who completely deny it. But there’s an even dumber kind of right-winger: The one who uncritically buys into the narrative framing set up by his enemies.
If you really need some youthful heroes to root for, donate to the identitarians. Unlike St Greta, they’re actually running real risks.

  232. German_reader says

Are you now in favour of imperialism or why do you recommend this book?

  233. No, but I am realistic about it and we should not deny the beneficial side of imperialism when it comes to spreading culture and civilization. But it depends who is the imperialist. When a higher civilization conquers a lower civilization then the net benefit is positive. Possibly Germany and Eastern Europe would have been in a better shape if they were conquered by Romans. But if a lower culture conquers higher culture (vide Turks and Byzantium or Russia and Baltic States) then the net benefit is negative.

  234. Once I asked an elderly German-Austrian friend of mine which country did he think the Jews disliked the most. He squirmed because he insists on having jewish friends. Then answered: Russia. And then? Germany. And then? Spain.

There are really no Jews in Spain, but they have very recently acquired the right –as reparation, no less– to Spanish nationality. Have not looked it up because it’s too depressing.

  235. Green parties’ results jumped in this election. So regardless the secular uptrend in popularity (which had its bumps), there’s something to be explained here.

I regularly check my Facebook wall and I can assure you that otherwise intelligent and knowledgeable upper middle class people uncritically share pro-Greta content. Greta is a big topic among the constituency of the Green parties, the urban intelligent young or middle aged upper middle class and middle class people.

Oh and lest we forget, Greens are not really about climate change. They are big on converting low emission third worlders into high emission first worlders. They want to shut down nuclear plants, climate change be damned. They want to do lots of questionable things like extinguishing wildfires (does it really help long term? maybe they just make the forests even more vulnerable to future wildfires? or maybe it’s all irrelevant for climate change?) or promoting vegetarianism (ruminants play an ecological role, but never mind), etc.

You must be really dumb if you think voting for the Green parties does any good to the environment.

  236. German_reader says

Possibly Germany and Eastern Europe would have been in a better shape if they were conquered by Romans.

Maybe, I’d agree that views of the Roman empire are often too critical nowadays (I don’t have that positive a view of the Spanish and Russian empires though, and Ottoman empire was absolutely disastrous imo for the Balkans).
I don’t see though why you think that this book wouldn’t be translated into English for ideological reasons, pro-imperial sentiment is quite common among certain proponents of American hegemony. People like Robert Kagan speak openly of an “American empire” and see it as a good thing.

  237. Surprising, but true. It’s successful.

  238. There is a problem in the chart, because it does not include category “Masortim”.

They seem to compress Masortim onto the category of “non-religious” and “religious”.

In reality, “Datim” are only the same numbers as Haredim, and not such large numbers as in the chart.

If you look only at the Jews in Israel, something like this looks more accurate.

  239. Why would more than a small minority of people interested enough about Spain to read such a narrow history book, need a translation to English?

Almost every European origin person interested or knowledgeable about the history of Spain, can easily read Spanish books. And people which don’t read Spanish, would not have resources to assess such historical claims anyway, and be unlikely to be interested in them.

(I can easily read history books in Spanish, if I want, and I just learned the language in a few months as a hobby, and without effort – Spanish is so close to other European languages there is no excuse for people interested in the country’s history, not to learn the language).

  240. Of course, not to mention the very obvious examples of Korea and Japan, two countries that free-market-ideologues/neoliberal-scum love pointing to as shining examples of “capitalism’s” power to lift nations out of poverty. In reality their spectacular initial growth was almost entirely government planned.

  241. Most of the mainstream Right don’t even deserve the appellation of a political compass, they’re simply interested in defending their own money. Hence trash like this are usually the best sort of people they can attract.

  242. Perhaps it would get some votes from “educated” urban moderates who boldly profess themselves to be “fiscally conservative but socially liberal”.

“Hi, I’m a degenerate but I also hate poor people.

  243. The reason it won’t be translated it is because it is contesting the black legend about Spain and the Church that was successfully created and promoted by British to which you have uncritically succumbed. You do not know what we are missing by relegating the Spanish from the dominant Western culture narrative. When Spain is mentioned all you get are jeers, sneers, derisions and satire and jokes about the Spanish Armada. Spanish culture has been amputated from the main body of Western culture and that’s why we are crippled.

Google information about the “Black Legend” – the largescale exaggeration of Spanish crimes, repression and brutality by English writers. Hispanophobia was the Russophobia of the 16th-18th centuries and a lot of those false claims about the Spanish are just taken for granted today.”

    ::::::::::::

Spanish Empire was a remarkable nearly self-contained world. The rest of Europe passed it by but it was beautiful, which matters a lot.

  246. “Have not looked it up because it’s too depressing.” – Indeed, it is very depressing.

  247. “Spanish Empire was a remarkable nearly self-contained world.” – Compare what treatment Lope de Vega gets versus Shakespeare.

Some 3,000 sonnets, 3 novels, 4 novellas, 9 epic poems, and about 500 plays are attributed to him. Although he has been criticised for putting quantity ahead of quality, nevertheless at least 80 of his plays are considered masterpieces.

In spite of some discrepancies in the figures, Lope’s own records indicate that by 1604 he had composed 230 three-act plays (comedias). The figure had risen to 483 by 1609, to 800 by 1618, to 1000 by 1620, and to 1500 by 1632. Montalbán, in his Fama Póstuma (1636) set down the total of Lope’s dramatic productions at 1800 comedias and more than 400 shorter sacramental plays. Of these, 637 plays are known by their titles, but only about 450 are extant. Many of these pieces were printed during Lope’s lifetime, mostly by the playwright himself in the shape of twelve-play volumes, but also by booksellers who surreptitiously bought manuscripts from the actors who performed them.

Lope de Vega is just one example. We practically inherited nothing in their political and legal discourse concerning slavery. They were several centuries ahead of the Anglo-Saxon world. But they have archives and huge libraries in Spain that survived despite of earnest efforts of Republicans to destroy whatever could be destroyed of Spanish heritage during the Civil War. I suspect that German Reader may still have a wet dream of being born too late to join the fabulous International Brigade with commies and Jews given his educational indoctrination in post War Germany.

Wut, Poland didn’t even exist as an independent state when the Ottoman Empire was getting dismantled
The Russian Empire fought a dozen minor and major conflicts with the Ottomans, taking Crimea aswell as large swathes of southern Ukraine, it also emboldened and supported Romania, Serbia and Montenegro in their revolts against the Ottomans and Russian troops fought to liberate Bulgaria and to conquer the Caucasus from the Turks
In fact, Montenegrins were so grateful to the Tsar for sending aid to them that they would later declare war on Japan during the Russo-Japanese war, not signing a peace treaty with them until 2006

The Habsburgs abandoned Russia during the Crimean war and ended up allying with the Ottomans in WW1
If you said “The Habsburgs played a greater role in stopping and containing the Ottomans from taking over more of Europe” then I would’ve agreed

    áspero, tierno, liberal, esquivo,
    alentado, mortal, difunto, vivo,
    leal, traidor, cobarde y animoso.

no hallar fuera del bien centro y reposo,
    mostrarse alegre, triste, humilde, altivo,
    enojado, valiente, fugitivo,
    satisfecho, ofendido, receloso;

huir el rostro al claro desengaño,
    beber veneno por licor suave,
    olvidar el provecho, amar el daño;

creer que un cielo en un infierno cabe,
dar la vida y el alma a un desengaño,
esto es amor: quien lo probó, lo sabe.

This is just one random, untitled love sonnet to a woman. Lope, truly a Renaissance fellow, had a complex personality. Besides being a ladies’ man, he also attempted to be a priest and wrote hauntingly beautiful “sacred love” sonnets to God. And then there are his plays, which recognized the good and the bad in human nature and yet inspired what is most honorable in man. What is most amazing is that Lope was one among many in Spain’s “Golden Century”: Francisco Quevedo, Garcilaso de la Vega, Góngora, Ignacio de Loyola, Teresa de Avila and Juan de la Cruz.

How can one attempt a Lope translation?

    Fainting, daring, being furious,
    rough, tender, liberal, evasive.
    encouraged, mortal, deceased, living,
    loyal, traitor, coward, venturesome.

To find not outside the good center and repose,
Show oneself gay, sad, humble, prideful
    upset, valiant, fugitive,
    satisfied, offended, suspicious.

To flee the face from clear disillusion,
    Drink poison as liqueur dainty,
    Forget profit and love damage;

To believe that a heaven in hell is contained,
Give life and soul to disillusion,
This is love: who has tasted, knows.

Sure, but overall Hapsburg (not only Austria, also Spain – remember Lepanto) and Poland did more to stop and throw back the Ottomans from Europe.

Yet I could learn Spanish quickly and effortlessly, as it was easy (for European language people).

Sadly, after I could learn to speak Spanish effortlessly in a few months, I was a little proud about my “language learning genius”.

So I thought I could learn Hebrew. Yet learning a non-European language is very different, and I still can’t speak Hebrew after 2 years of learning (although I can read Hebrew at a basic level).

Any educated European man has no excuse to not know Spanish, as it is not difficult at all.

There’s a significant enough market in Spanish history in England to sustain popular books; for instance Geoffrey Parker’s books about Philip II and even his grand strategy specifically and Hugh Thomas’ multi-volume history of the Spanish empire. In fact, when I was in Madrid I saw that most of the Spanish books in museum bookshops were English works that had been translated into Spanish.

  278. On the subject of Spanish history, over the summer I read Spain: A Unique History by Stanley Payne (Anglo-American). It’s more historiography – a history of the history of Spain – and a good corrective to the dominant PC propaganda without succumbing to right wing contrarianism.

Also, the six part British (Granada) TV documentary on the Spanish Civil War – free on YouTube – gives a much more balanced account of the war than the couple of more recent continental ones I’ve seen which were hysterically pro-Republican. It probably is good because it came out in the early 1980s before PCness ruined everything.

I’ve read it too, interesting book.
Payne has also written a biography of Franco which seemed quite balanced to me (doesn’t omit the darker aspects like the mass repression during and immediately after the civil war or Franco’s pro-Axis sympathies during much of WW2, but avoids the demonization which seems to be common to many other books about Franco).

Last witch was killed in Protetnat Europe in the 1780s (Switzerland). Not much difference.

Spanish Inquisition had about 6,000 victims in its entire history. It pioneered the use of due process in law, which meant that witchhunts were not a feature of Spanish justice. Those killed for heresy, like the unfortunate unrepentant deist Ripoll, were actual heretics.

In contrast an estimated 40,000-50,000 “witches” were killed in northern Europe.

But seriously, dude, there are other languages besides Spanish to learn (or relearn).

And living, as I do, in a country being colonized by Spanish-speaking dimwits, the language has negative associations for me that it understandably would not have for you.

Blaming Romanians for the predations, stupidity, and sloth of gypsies, an entirely different nation, would be like blaming all Americans for the predations, stupidity, and sloth of an utterly distinct and incompatible group, African-“Americans.”

  286. RadicalCenter says

Good point. Also, a native speaker of English, Italian, or French, who is well versed in his own language, should be able to identify and understand the roots of many Spanish words, consistent thus far with Dmitry’s position. But we cannot quickly and readily tell how they are conjugated (verbs) or declined (nouns).

Learning enough basic Spanish to get by in simple conversations is one thing. I’ve done that just living in this Latino colony called Los Angeles. Learning Spanish well enough to read an article, let alone a novel, is a different proposition even for intelligent people with high knowledge of the common etymology of Romance languages (Latin roots).

  287. RadicalCenter says

Love your “defense” of Spain saying, “yeah, they killed people because of their beliefs, but at leasT they were REALLY heretics.” LOL.

  288. Vigilance against heretics and nipping the problem in the bud prevented something like what Martin Luther did to Germany, which resulted in the deaths of 30% of Germans.

Also, mercy was not an unknown element of the Inquisition. During this process most people tried for heresy repented and were not killed. The ones who were killed were actually unrepentant ones, who chose to die rather than submit. So yes, they really were heretics, and they were those zealous heretics who voluntarily chose death over repentance. Again, compare to what was happening among the English and other Protestants who spread horror stories about the Inquisition – murdering 10,000s of mostly innocent “witches.”

  289. Ahead in what

    Miscegenation?

That was pretty much unavoidable, given the Spanish model of colonization: military conquest of vast territories on several continents, exploitation of their riches and religious conversion of their inhabitants. None of this required female settlers in those distant lands and, in any case, this race mixing didn’t affect the metropolis.

A similar phenomenon happened in territories colonized by British or Dutch that were not very suitable for the settlement of European families, such as the Caribbean.

But a different matter is the way the Spaniards conducted the expulsion of Jews and Moors, based more on religious than ethnic grounds. A number of converts managed to stay on the Iberian peninsula, as shown nowadays by genetic studies: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-018-08272-w

As far as I can see in most international IQ studies, this did not have a very depressing effect on the Spanish average IQ but I have the impression that it did have a long-term effect on some other personality traits. Without any knowledge of DNA, by the end of the 19th Century people in the Basque Country, that was never conquered by the Muslims, realized that the immigrants coming from the South to their incipient industrial centers were of a very different character. Basque nationalism was born at that time and had a very strong racial component, as opposed to its current cultural/linguistic emphasis.

In fact, Spaniards themselves were aware of this problem in the 16th Century. Only persons of proven Christian roots or natives of the Northern regions (“Old Christians”) were allowed to become officers in the imperial army and navy. The rest were relegated to rank and file positions.

  293. reiner Tor says

Well, you can broadly say that reformation eroded the – already to a large extent only nominally existing – central authority down by destroying the power of the Catholic Church, which in previous centuries held it together and prevented protracted civil wars from happening. It also created an ideology which aligned the northern princes with foreign powers against the imperial center.

So I would argue that yes, it was largely responsible for that war. But not a proximate cause, rather like how you can say that Marx’s and Engels’ writings and founding an ideology led to the Russian Civil War and later in the 20th century a few mass murderous forms of government like Stalinism or Maoism.

Also, it’s similar in the sense that you can argue that some similar ideology was due to happen anyway, and so the Thirty Years War or the mass murdering leftist regimes in the 20th century were inevitable anyway. (But that’s just basically saying that if Luther hadn’t written something similar, then someone else would’ve come up with a similar ideology, and the same thing about Marx. Which may or may not be true.)

  294. reiner Tor says

Well, this would mean that intelligent people have no confirmation bias or cannot hold irrational opinions firmly, especially when their peer group holds the same set of opinions. I think it’s just simply not the case. Intelligent people are those who can solve complex problems, but they will still have a religion or pseudo-religion.

In the longer term view all Christian powers are vile as are the Islamic ones.

    So

  309. German_reader says

You’re making the case that it would be a good thing to kill (not even just imprison or fine or whatever, but to burn at the stake) people for spreading ideas critical of your religious orthodoxy (including people like that Spanish deist executed in 1826, so don’t try to justify this stance with referring to the 30-years war, Anabaptists at Münster or whatever), so the comparison with the Iranian system is quite appropriate imo. Your personal beliefs about the truth of Catholicism are completely irrelevant from a non-Catholic perspective, which probably includes most commenters here.

  310. I’ve always been amused by the Catholics who want to draw a moral equivalency between the persecution of Catholics in England and that of Protestants in Spain.

They’ll trip over themselves when talking about the disabilities suffered by English Catholics, which were quite real. So then I ask them about how those compared to the disabilities suffered by Spanish Protestants, and it gets real quiet. There were no Spanish Protestants, they were all dead.

This is not to say, BTW, that the crimes committed by the Spanish Inquisition were not greatly exaggerated. They were.

But trying to compare the evils of Protestantism with the Spanish Inquisition by citing the witch trials doesn’t work. While there were few witch trials in Spain, there were plenty in other Catholic countries and regions. Catholics and Protestants were roughly equal in this area.

  311. The argument isn’t that Catholicism prevented witch trials, it’s that the Inquisition made witch trials very difficult, which argument applies perfectly well to Spain.

  312. Sorry, but you can’t cite witch hunts as “a Protestant thing.” Plenty were killed by Catholics. Killing witches was one of the few things they agreed on.

Also, the killing of witches, while done by Protestants (and Catholics) was rarely a specifically Church activity, as almost all such trials were handled in civil courts.

As opposed to Inquisitions, which were specifically part of the Church.

  313. Maybe a third of people in countries like Colombia say, or will say, they are descended from Medieval Spanish Jews that had converted to Christianity (converso), and emigrated to South America, even as most of them now have more native American ancestry.

In Israel, there are so many brown guest workers (i.e. cleaners and au pair) from South America. I have personally met South Americans in Israel. At the same time, Israel doesn’t give them citizenship.

I’m sure Israel’s justification for not giving conversos citizenship, is not racism against brown Latinos, but because they seem religiously very Christian (which is probably the real motive for why they chose to go to Israel).

In Israel, people who are religiously Christian, can only immigrate through other family members, and are banned from immigrating based on only ancestry.

However, Spain’s criteria for giving citizenship will surely not include any religious criteria (they won’t care about current religion of the immigrant), unlike Israel, so the conversos will have a better chance of attaining the Spanish citizenship, than the Israeli one.

  314. Again, compare to what was happening among the English and other Protestants who spread horror stories about the Inquisition – murdering 10,000s of mostly innocent “witches.”

Reading comprehension? This statement is a true comparison of England with Spain. If you think the author intended it as a comparison of England and Bavaria perhaps you can explain why?

  315. It depends on the type of text.

If you want to read fiction in Spanish – I find the vocabulary is quite unique for Spanish (you can’t infer it from Russian/English/French, etc).

But if you look documentary literature, a large proportion of the words are shared the languages.

If you read every week an article of Vargas Llosa for example, from El Pais – I believe you will understand part of the article without need for study (and with a few weeks or months of study, you could read the majority of it).

    https://elpais.com/elpais/2019/03/15/opinion/1552649482_430368.html

as I do, in a country being colonized by Spanish-speaking dimwits, the language has negative associations

I can’t agree with that view, as I always have a positive experience with Latin American people I ever met.

However, if you live in Los Angeles, well, I can imagine how unfiltered immigration from Latin America (as it would be from any third world continent), is a disaster.

I visited Los Angeles two years ago, and I like the city for a vacation and find it strangely romantic. But it is one of the strangest cities I ever have been to. I had an impression the different races are living in their own areas?

  316. But this is good news for German_Reader! It means he (German_Reader) need not complain about Muslim immigration as it is only a return to historical European norms.

It means not that Catholic Europe is as bad as the mullahs but that the mullahs are as good as the civilization which produced Bach and Velazquez, so once they take over its remnants these glorious things will come back.

  317. (I am aware that Bach was Lutheran.)

  318. It does no such thing. It simply reports what happened.

Of course most people assume this story is the result of the Hebrews wanting to defame the origins of the related Ammonites and Moabites.

  319. The sentence in question is pretty complex, but it appears to be trying to draw a comparison between the Spanish and its Inquisition, which killed relatively few people, and the English, who spread horror stories about the Inquisition but killed a lot more innocents, specifically “witches.”

Unfortunately, the comparison is damaged by sticking “and other Protestants” into the mix.

England was not among the big countries for witch hunts. It is estimated <500 total, which compares quite favorably with those murdered by the Spanish Inquisition. Close to half of those in one area during a short period of the mid-1600s. Scotland was much worse in this regard.

    http://www.capitalpunishmentuk.org/witchcraft.html

My point, however, is that the moral equivalence between Protestants and Catholics based on the idea that Protestants cannot legitimately criticize the Inquisition because Protestants killed witches doesn't work. You see, Catholics also killed witches with great enthusiasm (though to be sure rarely in Spain) and they also ran the Inquisition, which Protestants didn't do. Though they at times had somewhat parallel procedures.

The Spanish Inquistion prevented heresies from spreading and kept Spain free of something like the 30 years’ war, French Revolution, Huguenot wars in France, etc. The fanatic, activist Spanish deist inspired by post-Revolutionary France, who refused to recant and thus chose to be executed, was of the sort who tried to cause such bloody problems, whose death tolls were far higher than those of the Spanish Inquisition. So it was, on balance, a good thing from the perspective of keeping order and preventing worse bloodshed.

Secondly, the system being preserved was a good one. Spanish civilization is not Islamic Iran.

Your personal beliefs about the truth of Catholicism are completely irrelevant from a non-Catholic perspective

Whch is why I don’t even apply them to this argument.

  322. Christianity brought Europeans from savagery to civilization, producing the most beautiful and most advanced civilization in the world.

  323. German_reader says

Whch is why I don’t even apply them to this argument.

    You’re writing things like

Mary killed people in order to save souls

which fails completely as an argument unless one believes that the Catholic church and the sacraments administered by its priests are necessary for salvation.
But we’ve had similar discussions before, and they weren’t constructive in any way, so I’ll stop.

Point taken. However, although Britain didn’t come into existence until 1707, Scotland was under the English king for about a century earlier.

My point, however, is that the moral equivalence between Protestants and Catholics based on the idea that Protestants cannot legitimately criticize the Inquisition because Protestants killed witches doesn’t work. You see, Catholics also killed witches with great enthusiasm (though to be sure rarely in Spain) and they also ran the Inquisition, which Protestants didn’t do.

The Catholic places where the Inquisition was strongest (Spain and Italy) were the ones with the fewest witch-killings. IIRC once the Roman Inquistion took over all witch trials nobody was killed as a witch anymore.

Again, the Inquisition applied due process and required evidence. People accused of witchcraft wanted the Inquistion to handle their case. The Inquisition targetted heretics. It provided them with mercy if they recanted and expressed remorse. The ones killed were mostly fanatics, like that deist guy killed in 1828. It wasn’t some sort of terror organization as anti-Spanish propagandists made it out to be. Having the Inquistion didn’t make Spain or Italy somehow morally “worse” than those countries that did not have it.

  325. This wasn’t the main point in the disucssion, and spoke to humanitarian rather than instrumental motive for the killings, rather than to the specific doctrine. If Elizabeth felt that she was killing people for their own good, to save their eternal souls, they would have been equal.

    The Black Legend
    https://catholicism.org/the-black-legend.html

Here is a more recent definition by a Protestant American historian, Philip Wayne Powell, from his book Tree of Hate: “An image of Spain circulated through late sixteenth century Europe borne by means of political and religious propaganda that blackened the characters of Spaniards and their ruler to such an extent that Spain became the symbol of all forces of repression, brutality, religious and political intolerance and intellectual and artistic backwardness for the next four centuries. Spaniards have termed this process and the image that resulted from it as ‘The Black Legend.’ ”

  331. But — What About the Inquisition?

    from: https://catholicism.org/the-black-legend.html

    • the Inquisition had jurisdiction only over those who claimed to be Christians. It had none over the unbaptized.

    • in the entire sixteenth century, Inquisitorial courts in Spain handed only forty to fifty persons over for execution. Compare that to the blood-lust in post-Reformation England or Revolutionary France where in a single day fifty heads fell via the guillotine!

    • the use of the courts of Inquisition in Spain actually prevented the terrible religious wars that France and Germany endured where thousands of Catholics and Protestants died, the land was laid waste, and Christianity was split asunder. To be Spanish was to be Catholic, and the Inquisition there was the instrument by which this was accomplished.

Jesuit Legacy in the Bolivian Jungle: A Love of Baroque Music
    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/world/americas/bolivia-baroque-music.html

“It was about building a different society, a kind of utopia with education, self-sustainability — and of course, with music, which was the way the Jesuits evangelized,” said the Rev. Piotr Nawrot, a Roman Catholic priest from Poland who lives in Bolivia and was involved in recovering some of the original Baroque manuscripts.

But among the lowland Bolivians, the legacy of Baroque music survived — even centuries after indigenous communities lost the tradition of reading music, learning songs by ear.

To understand just how powerful the tradition remains today, consider Urubichá, a farming village northwest of Concepción on the end of an unpaved dirt road bordering a swamp reached only after crossing 10 bridges through dense jungle.

The town of 8,000 has a music school teaching 500 students, nearly every child there. At lunchtime, children wander the village square toting instrument cases on their backs. They speak Guarayo, the native language

People on the Right (who, in truth, are mostly cowards who recoil from the word “nationalist”) are broadly skeptical of global climate change. The Greens, if they were serious, could offer to cede them everything to save the planet. But they are emotionally incontinent, and their paradigm is to grow their power gradually and call it compromise.

Of course, it is probably a mistake to point to the Machiavellianism of crowds. More likely, they are both serious about it and irrational about it. Maybe, that is the winning formula for the accumulation of power.

  337. I don’t know Malaga, but I would recommend Seville on Friday nights, before semana santa – when there are rehearsals for semana santa (for example, end of February forward) in the street.

At that time of year, there are no many tourists. You can book for the hotel room in the labyrinth streets of the old city easily. (We booked a room when we arrived at 8pm, without knowing anything about what was this city Seville).

On semana santa actual days, then I believe hotels will be booked, with millions of tourists there (from all over Spain). Seats near the procession in Seville cost hundreds of euros each.

But mysterious night procession rehearsals are going through the streets every Friday for weeks before actual semana santa.

  347. Re: The Spanish Inquisition

The Spanish Inquisition is one of the two main pillars of the Spanish Black Legend, the other being the extractive nature of the Spanish conquest of the Americas. It would be fair to say that the Spanish Inquisition is then depicted as bloody, retrograde, and holding back Spanish pursuit of knowledge.

    1) A bloody and retrograde institution.

The Spanish Inquisition was founded to counter the deliberate subversion of the Christian moral order, thus ultimately also the political order. Its purpose then was to retain political and moral order.

The precedents would be the Church’s local fights against the loony cathars (1184) and albingensians (1209), until it created a centralized Inquisition under Dominican rule in 1234. Also, and specifically regarding the converso problem in Spain, one has to take into account that the Church had come to know the contents of the Talmud through the conversion of Jew Nicolas Donin in 1238 and had then started to realize that Jews were not only patiently awaiting the Messiah, but had religious injunctions to mistreat and cheat Christians, and regular prayers against Christians. Since actions follow naturally from ideas,  the Jews had become resentful, abusive and subversive of the Christian order. After Donin, the Church set upon a course of disputations to foster jewish conversion, which produced many true conversions. (The idea had solid precedents, a Church Father already enjoined along the lines of “love thy enemy not because he is your enemy, or because he is right, but that through that love he may convert and become your brother in Christ”). But of course, with conversion came social benefits that were not granted to admitted Jews, and false conversions.

The Jews in Spain were known to have helped the Muslim conquest since the beginning in 711, and during the subsequent centuries. It will surprise no one in the Unz commentariat that they were regarded as a fifth column, and that their ties with converso Jews, powerful through usury and in government, caused suspicion. The loyalty of these Christian conversos to Christ and King was the jurisdiction of the S. Inquisition.

The Inquisition founded in 1478, lived for another 356 years, and had jurisdiction wherever the monarchy had, that is, in all the empire. It executed less than 3,000 persons, or around 9 a year. It kept extensive records, and applied torture to only 1-2% of cases. Torture was legal at the time, yet the Inquisition could not torture to death or risk of death or mutilate, was often done in the presence of a doctor and the proceedings recorded. Later use of torture was abolished. Many of the tortures depicted by John Foxe in his Book of Martyrs were not used by the Inquisition, but by civil governments. The accuser could not be anonymous, and was investigated to see if he would profit by his accusation. The accused was notified, could recuse a judge and bring witnesses to speak for him. He could have his possessions and writing materials in his cell. He could leave to go to Mass and certain pilgrimages. He could recant his heresy and avoid death. A measure of the institution is that  common civil prisoners blasphemed (while in prison) to attempt to be drawn into the Inquisition’s jurisdiction.

Were other civil authorities across Europe as humane? More humane? Did those other authorities a) uphold the existing, legitimate moral order or b) imposed a new one for their own particular benefit (Henry VIII and German princes)?

    2) That the Spanish Inquisition hampered the development of thought and culture of Spain.

The Inquisition started just before the greatest flourishing of Spanish culture. The “Siglo de Oro” under Habsburg rule is commonly dated from 1492, the year of unity and expansion, to the death of Calderon de la Barca (1681). Language and law were codified, as were the philosophical underpinnings of Christian civilization. Close to two centuries of steady production of beauty and thought.

And how to gauge the immense effort of transferring Christian civilization where the monster-gods had reigned? The sheer effort of organizing, of building, of technological transfer, of preserving local knowledge in  a whole continent should count as a clear cultural achievement. An anecdote about Philip II tells how, when interviewing explorers recently returned from the Phillipines, he was told it was a very poor, backwards land with little in the way of resources. “There is nothing there, Majesty.” He countered: “Are there souls?”. The Phillipines are named after him.

To gauge the Inquisition, look at the 300 years of peace in Spain (peninsular and American) from 1521 to 1821. Unity was the precursor to order, growth and flourishing.

  348. The State of Zacatecas is nowadays a poor part of Mexico, but its capital of the same name is a rather beautiful town, built when it was part of Spain, in the local rose-colored stone. During Semana Santa, they do a Procession of Silence, that narrates the Christ’s Passion. Local parishes have these brotherhoods, who organize and fund the event.

I assisted once, and was surprised at how very moving I found it. The videos are rather amateurish, but from minute 8, you catch glimpses of the Cathedral.

  358. Here are Wikipedia’s statistics for witchcraft executions:

    British Isles: 1,500-2,000
    Holy Roman Empire: 25,000-30,000
    France: 1,000
    Scandinavia: 1,700-2,000
Central & Eastern Europe(Poland-Lithuania, Hungary and Russia): 2,000
Southern Europe (Spain, Portugal and Italy): 1,000

Also according to Wikipedia, the amount of people killed by the Spanish Inquisition was between 3,000-5,000.

As can be seen from these numbers(if they are correct), lumping all of Northern Europe in with the Holy Roman Empire and then comparing them to Southern Europe, is highly misleading.

Even if we credit Southern Europe’s subjection to the Inquisition as the cause of its lower numbers of people killed as witches, that difference is more than made up for by the peope killed by the Inquisition. I would also suggest that the distinction between witches and heretics is mostly not a real one. Therefore there would be more justification in combining the deaths from witchcraft trials and from Inquisition trials together than would be putting all of Northern Europe into one bucket(or, in case it needs to be said, putting all of Protestant Europe into one bucket).

If we do that, and adjust for population, we would find that France is the most moderate, not Spain, Portugal, Italy. We would also conclude that places with more religious divisions look worst in this comparison(Holy Roman Empire). It’s a smaller effect, but we would also observe that more backwards places among the areas of comparison(Scandinavia and Scotland) may have had more witches killed per head. But I fail to see any evidence for the glories of the Spanish Inquistion with regards to witchcraft trials.

  359. Even if we credit Southern Europe’s subjection to the Inquisition as the cause of its lower numbers of people killed as witches, that difference is more than made up for by the peope killed by the Inquisition.

Inquisition served other purposes (see the excellent comment #367). A peripheral but beneficial side-effect was far fewer witch killings.

If you are going to include Inquisition to witch-killings for southern Europe, then you can add various political executions meant to try to maintain order (a main purpose of the Inquisition) for northern Europe. Henry VIII alone executed 10,00os of people. You may also consider the millions of deaths caused by various religious wars in northern Europe, that were probably prevented by the Inquisition rooting out and snuffing out heretics and troublemakers before they could cause serious harm.

  360. TheTotallyAnonymous says

St Bartholomew’s Massacre though? Huguenots in France and Catherine Medici?

  361. Your claim that the Inquisition was done to “maintain order” is probably not one many of the executors of the Inquisition actually believed. I see no reason in arguing against your own imaginings, especially since you will just come up with another premise anyway.

Let us also remember it was you who wanted to compare witch trials and the Inquisition, and went further and said this: “The Catholic places where the Inquisition was strongest (Spain and Italy) were the ones with the fewest witch-killings.” The data I presented makes this claim questionable. Your response is that we should compare even more things. Since I never bought the premise of your argument in the first place, I see no need to do this.

The idea that religious wars would have occurred in southern Europe if not for the Inquisition is speculative, and not very interesting. Logically speaking, the argument that the Inquisition was good because it might have prevented these wars says very little. One could argue with as much validity that if the Catholics in northern Europe had just converted to Protestantism, there would have been no wars either! Or maybe if everyone in Europe had just stayed pagan, none of the religious wars would have happened. One could even make arguments about the superiority of Orthodox Christianity from this perspective.

Many of your claims could be responded to in this way. You blame Martin Luther for wars that occurred later. One could just as well blame the Catholic Church for responding so negatively to what were originally Catholic reformers. Of course if you start from the premise that Roman Catholic Church = good, you can make up all sorts of reasons to justify this. But logically, none of what you presented has any advantages over alternatives.

Though, once created, and with the help of bots and sock puppet accounts, they will be readily believed and shared by lots of dumb people. But, see, none of these people would have created the memes themselves.

Sounds like a scientific theory. In a Hungarian article I even read about what the most useful methods of spreading disinformation was – the journalist learned it from the game itself. Pretty scientific.

Your response is that we should compare even more things.

You started to compare even more things when you added the people killed by Inquisition (for any reason) to those killed for witchcraft.

So if we limit it to witch-killings, without adding even mor things aas you wanted to do (but changed yor mind when shown that doing so inflated the killing in Protestant lands even more) we see 1,000 total for Spain, Italy, etc. that had the Inquisition.

    Compared to:

    British Isles: 1,500-2,000
    Holy Roman Empire: 25,000-30,000
    France: 1,000
    Scandinavia: 1,700-2,000

I wanted to make money betting she’d win the Dem nom, which I could use to fund my escape to safety in Bashkortostan. Given the massive psychological engineering which Cattle-Americans have been subjected to, it seemed to me that a pseudo-black woman, who was objectively fairly smart, and skilled at climbing status hierarchies, should easily take the nomination. All she had to do was campaign hard, mouth saccharine platitudes, and deflect criticism by claiming to be black (the progressive Master Race). I bought Harris heavily on predictIt, while also shorting Biden in roughly equal amounts.

Harris campaign has all but failed of course, and her probability on predictIt is now something like 5%, lower than Crooked Hillary, who’s not even officially running. Why did Harris fall apart? A lack of insider support? Some social dynamic among normie Dem voters I don’t understand? Is she not seen as black enough? Is a “black” woman lawyer somehow less appealing than a “black” man lawyer (Barry)? Are the effects not additive?

I get that Gabbard BTFOed Harris in a debate, but that isn’t much of an explanation. A fundamentally strong candidate would have weathered that, the way Sleepy Joe weathered all that press of him getting handsie. Biden is essentially openly criminal, yet he’s still #2. I think that a lot of us fail to grasp some key dynamics at work here. On paper Harris should be almost unbeatable in this field, according to progressive axioms, but she’s a paper tiger. Best guess is she failed to win Media favor, but I suspect there’s something more to it. (Only smart people answer please)

You’re supposed to hide in a conference room, and literally cower on your knees or in a deep squat, with your hands over your head. Presumably the shooter won’t have done the training and know this. The best way to get out of this enormous indignity is to claim to have suddenly been struct by severe diarrhea and then sit on the john while everyone else is cowering. Really, quite a thing to see 50 year old men on the floors, covering their heads like it’s a bloody 1950s kindergarten class ducking and covering. It’s both humiliation and compliance ritual. Never do these, be fired before you let them turn the workplace entirely into a elementary school.

Makes me think that the downsides of remote work and gradually being outweight be the impracticalities of meshing Wokeism, Longhouseism and MeTooism with a functioning business environment.
