Standstill

FlightRadar24 is a live map that shows all the world’s commercial air flights in real time.

The world is at a standstill, with the major exception of the US. Though I hear that many of these flights are empty or near empty.

Nonetheless, I do wonder when we last saw such a high North American share of all the world’s flight. My guess would be 1955 or 1960.

Eyeballing it looks like there’s more flights over Russia than there over all of Europe. Not sure this has ever happened in world history.

Not that this is a good thing under the present circumstances. Moscow is Russia’s Corona epicenter, and there’s a flow of bodies taking it to Sochi.

Is it jump me or does China have even fewer flights now than it did in mid-February? This did close their borders just the other day.

  2. Is there any reasonable rationale for China maintaining these narrow flight corridors, in the days of cheap spy satellites? Or is the military just hidebound?

  3. What would this coronavirus pandemic be like if this occured in the late 90s, say 1998, and also started in China, even back then, you had fax machines and telephones, and some people had email, so some degree of work from home was possible, back then South East Asian nations had a financial crisis and were not as well resourced 20-odd years ago, and Russia and Eastern Europe were also a lot less well resourced back then, maybe comparable to where Indonesia or Bangladesh is today, although population density is lower, but then 1918 showed that even with early 20th century technology widespread quarantines were still possible.

  12. Is it any wonder that planes tread carefully over Ukrainian territory? The whole world is watching:

  13. Moscow is now at the same level as London was last week. Looks like they’re about two weeks behind the uk in terms of the number of cases pp, though might be slightly better if they are testing more people. 17. Europe Europa says

The root cause of the problem is mass immigration, mainly from China in this case but from all over really, and the problem is only getting worse. I think the problem has been made worse by anti-Muslim civic nationalism, right wingers in Europe now see only Muslim immigration as a problem and have no qualms about having effectively open borders to countries like China and India, and to practically any country that isn’t Muslim.

A lot of right wingers in Britain are hysterical about Muslims flooding into Europe and Britain, yet are totally indifferent to the fact that much larger numbers of Indians and Chinese overall are flooding into the UK totally legally. I think in past decades people were much more aware of the hygiene and eating habits of countries like China and saw mass immigration from China as more of a threat in terms of viruses, etc, but nowadays people have been brainwashed to see Muslims as the exclusive global threat and have become oblivious to all other threats.

What will kill people is the social distancing BS and quarantines. Keeping people as far away from each other is a totalitarian’s wet dream. Bolsonaro sees right through your BS. Full spectrum dominance and raiding the coffers was the agenda from the beginning. Throw in Bill Gates’ exercise 201 in October, 2019, and you might begin to see the whole picture. But I doubt it.

Hope you’re first in line to get the mandatory vaccine that’ll ruin your health.

  22. Philip Owen says

Stage one of herd immunity. Slow things down to match the hospital capacity, high in Russia. Only really quarantine the old and ill.

  23. Moscow should have been sealed by the army a month ago, people prevented from leaving or exiting the city – and imprisonment for any morons leaving the home without full personal protective equipment (which airtight seals the mouth and eyes).

Of course, nothing like this has happened, and soon it is likely there will be many deaths as a result of government’s incompetence.

Still, on the positive side, the situation is better than the UK. Epidemic’s development situation in Russia, is around 2 weeks behind the UK.

    • As for why UK is two weeks more advanced into the epidemic than Russia? Mainly, because the UK has far more per capita interconnectivity with Europe, and particularly with Northern Italy, which was the landing point for coronavirus entry into Europe.

But there is also the “high trust” naivete of British government, and its clown Prime Minister, who it seems now confess they had previously believed Chinese data –

Scientists have warned Johnson that China could have downplayed its number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus “by a factor of 15 to 40 times.” China had reported 81,439 cases at the time of writing…

The newspaper quoted three UK officials, who all reported fury within Johnson’s government.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-boris-johnsons-government-reportedly-furious-with-china-2020-3

Compared to the British government – even the Russian government doesn’t seem like complete idiots. Boris Johnson is this naive who would apparently “buy the Brooklyn bridge”.

  29. Moscow should have been sealed by the army a month ago, people prevented from leaving or exiting the city…

Overreaction (I say this as someone who’s getting called a “doomerist”) that wouldn’t have been accepted back then. I mean, seriously? A month ago, even Italy only had ~1.5k cases.

What Russia should have done is cancel flights to/from Italy or better the EU 1-2 weeks before it did. When it did on March 18, the EU epidemic was already 5x as large as China, when Russia canceled flights with China on Jan 31. A sad reflection of the Kremlin’s, and Russian elites’ in general, lingering Europhilia.

  30. the airspace in China is still 80% military restricted

Seems kind of like a wasteful system, where trains are made competitive with planes.

I don’t know if it really makes sense. I mean, I’ll bet there’s some prison camps, etc. that the CCP wants to hide, but they should be visible on satellite. Any half-credible military threat has nuclear weapons, and knows China has them too. The only way I can rationalize it is that the Chinese military retain a lot economic power and thus political power.

Well, actually come to think of it – I wonder if they would have been able to shoot down the plane that hit the Pentagon. Perhaps, they could justify it on that level.

  31. In St. Petersburg, the idiot who returned from Switzerland was sent to stay at home for two weeks, but this figure did not want to stay at home. For this reason, he was captured and placed in a hotel converted for quarantine. So this asshole jumped through the window and escaped. Now he’s been caught again-it looks like he’s going to be quarantined in prison. It’s amazing what kind of degenerats live in the world

But the Champions are (as always) Ukrainians.
Ukrainians who returned from Vietnam had to undergo temperature screening, as well as sign documents regarding 14-day self-isolation. However, they refused to go for an examination,
The doors at the airport were blocked, but passengers began to push away medics in protective suits, and break through the doors. One man shouted: “Fascists!”. Police and national guard forces arrived at the scene, but they did not help much to contain the crowd. The video footage of the event can be seen as the Ukrainians “with suitcases and backpacks leave the airport
    .”

  32. sudden death says

This is great example where RF has been really ahead of the curve in this situation. The hospital seems to be also quite sturdy, from monolithic blocks whereas Wuhan ones were done mainly from light constructions. Is it intended to be not just temporary one? And whose initiative was that starting this building – federal government or strictly Sobyanin and is it intended to be used only for Moscow patients or from all RF?

  33. Overreaction (I say this as someone who’s getting called a “doomerist”) that wouldn’t have been accepted

However, people would have retrospectively understand. (And besides, public acceptance is not necessary to justify anti-epidemic measures, as it is situation where even John Stuart Mill’s liberty principle would allow the use of force against people, as in this context people damage others by damaging themselves.)

It’s also likely more cost-effective to sacrifice the movement of people in one city for a few months, than accepting an epidemic’s spread, and then set up emergency hospitals everywhere, and then eventually shut down the whole country so the hospitals are not too overflowing.

I think planner are already thinking about the latter nowadays. E.g. As part of supposed exercises and training, Ekaterinburg-EKSPO is now set up like.

    https://www.instagram.com/p/B-U64xtAjYi

EU epidemic was already 5x as large as China, when Russia canceled flights

And majority that I have read reports about are tourists who visited Europe, who came back home, through Moscow.

Preventing movement of civilians and non-essential workers from Moscow (so also shutting down internal flights and transport for non-essential workers), a month ago, would have delayed a spread of the developing epidemic to other cities, – well, not perfectly delayed, but significantly delayed, by some weeks, if not months.

Odessa was sealed by the army, when there were 120 people with cholera in 1970. As a result of such anti-epidemic policy, therefore that epidemic could not progress further into the USSR.

What Russia should have done is cancel flights to/from Italy or better the EU 1-2 weeks before it did.

Also remember how people who had flown from Iran were writing that they couldn’t be tested for coronavirus, even when they went to different doctors offices saying they needed to be tested.

Until maybe early March, people had to be both symptomatic & returning from Italy, Iran or China, to be allowed to be tested.

  34. Europe Europa says

White people used to be acutely aware of the dangers China poses, they used to be referred to as the “Yellow Peril”, but you don’t hear anyone calling them that any more. People have become too trusting of China and I think mass immigration from China to white countries has only increased because of it.

People had forgotten just what bad hygiene and strange eating habits the Chinese have and started to believe that culturally they are no different to whites, and believe that because they too are in a war against Muslims they have the same enemy therefore they are the same as the West.

  35. aleksander says

Funny how influenza deaths just kinda COMPLETELY disappeared, isn’t it. Guess it mutated into Coronavirus. LOL.

  36. Shouts of “fascists” suggests that these are easterners coming home through Kiev. But at any rate it was a dozen or two people.

  37. People had forgotten just what bad hygiene and strange eating habits the Chinese have and started to believe that culturally they are no different to whites

Nerdy American HBDers are the worst China cucks. Their crude reductionism provides a convenient explanation for what is in reality Chinese (and Jewish) nepotism. Australians and Canadians (at least those from British Colombia and Ontario) know the Chinese too well to fall for any of that.

  38. Shouts of “fascists” suggests that these are easterners coming home through Kiev. But at any rate it was a dozen or two people.

In all probability, these are Ukrainians gathered together from different parts of Ukraine (I very much doubt that Eastern and Western Ukrainians are taken out of Vietnam by different planes). The problem with these people (I hope you understand this) not the cry ” fascists”

  39. Philip Owen says

Boris bought Brexit. Stupider than the Brooklyn Bridge which is at least visible.

  40. In all probability, these are Ukrainians gathered together from different parts of Ukraine (I very much doubt that Eastern and Western Ukrainians are taken out of Vietnam by different planes).

Possible, but the troublemakers numbered a dozen or two so they probably would not have been geographically representative of the entire country.

The problem with these people (I hope you understand this) not the cry ” fascists

Sure. I just suspect that people shouting “fascists” are from eastern Ukraine. That’s not a common epithet by others, particularly westerners.

  41. I heard from the friend in Ukraine, that a large proportion of all people where he lives, and also in another city where his parents live, are wearing medical masks now (this is the useless kind for personal protection, but they might reduce airborne infectivity of infected people).

In North Western Europe and Russia, most people are not yet – although there are stories in the media about mass producing these now.

  42. I’ve noticed a number of southern Europeans online seem kind of annoyed that they appear to be doing worse than northern Europe, particularly Germany, almost to the point where they seem like they are privately cheering for disaster in the Netherlands and UK. Of those takes this one from Bruno Macaes is my favourite: Why is Germany doing better than other European countries fighting the virus? Because it received so many refugees. Many doctors, nurses and other personnel – ready to step in

I guess Spain & Italy missed out on the top migrants because Germany took them all.

  43. That situation is changing though with modernization in China, and each generation, and the younger Chinese people are less culturally distant.

A lot of the exotic primitivism of Chinese, is a result of the currently low economic and cultural development level of the country.

But already when you meet the richest, young segment of Chinese people, they start to seem far less exotic and strange.

Moreover, citizens from Taiwan, can already seem like normal people, not much different from Europeans. I remember almost a decade ago, when I studied in classes where there was a girl from Taiwan, and she was one of the most normal, adequate and witty people in our class.

If China continues to develop economically (as Taiwan had a couple of decades earlier – converting from the ones poorest countries in the world in the 1960s, to a developed country in the 1990s), and has some more decades of stability – then we can assume they will become culturally much more similar to European and American peoples.

  44. Overall, the response in Russia is better than in the UK, but not nearly as strict as would be in Soviet times.

Compared to the UK. Russia’s improvement is that the epidemic arrives two weeks later, partly because of more travel restrictions. Also the half-way closing down of cities might be almost two weeks earlier into the epidemic’s development, than in the UK’s epidemic.

There is some similarity with the UK’s response though. E.g. it was discussion whether or not to close the metro in Ekaterinburg, and they choose the same idea as London – reducing the frequency of trains. (In London, this has resulted with more people sharing the same trains ceteris paribus, so it was a bad idea).

I heard from the friend in Ukraine, that a large proportion of all people where he lives, and also in another city where his parents live, are wearing medical masks now ….In North Western Europe and Russia, most people are not yet – although there are stories in the media about mass producing these now.

Not the majority, but a significant part of the population in St. Petersburg right now wears masks. About a third of the passersby I met today were wearing masks

The big problem with masks is that a lot of people buy for stock, buy and don’t wear them

  47. Ms Karlin-Gerard says

Russia reached 50 cases only 4 days after the UK.

You can be assured that in the worst case scenario in 4 days time that Russia wouldn’t be much beyond 4000 cases. UK is currently at 22000……

Where you get “Russia is 2 weeks behind the UK” is a mystery.

I have full confidence in our testing and accuracy – there are 160000 currently under medical observation.

I disagree with what you are saying about connectivity- brits mainly go on holiday to the further south, hotter, coastal parts of Italy. I would be fairly sure that 99% of British people hadnt ever heard of the Lombardy Region before this crisis. Although there are decent numbers of Italians in the UK- Italy is not a mass emigrant to UK/Germany country like Poland- and almost certainly not from the rich, Northern part of Italy.

The truth is that we are doing a very successful job in all aspects of this – look at Kaliningrad compared to any of the Baltics.

  48. Ms Karlin-Gerard says

There is no “lockdown” in Moscow,Moscow region, Kazan, SP or anywhere outside of Chechnya.
Everybody is free to move in and out of Moscow by car, foot or whatever.

Strongly worded recommendations with no punishment system in place whatsoever is not a “lockdown” – any measures are likely to be only “negative reinforcement”( like stopping free metro travel for pensioners, but not stopping them from using it – as has happened with the “ban” on pensioners going outside in Moscow). Putin’s words on this back it up. All are only strongly advised. Anyway, punishments can’t be applied retroactively before they have come into force. Mass media are relaxingly interviewing pensioners outside walking or cycling or shopping.

If there is a “lockdown” can you list me ONE person who has been arrested of fined? (idiots who have been ordered to quarantine upon arrival from abroad, but not followed instruction don’t count)

Liberastic scum are trying to bait the authorities into a lockdown or martial law situation-but the truth is that on every criteria of democracy, number of cases, deaths, system, infrastructure – Russia has done best or near the best in the world on all these categories regarding the coronovirus.

  49. Ms Karlin-Gerard says

Sorry Dmitry–disregard the first 3 paragraphs, total nonsense!

Equally to blame is Karlin and his despicable ban – forcing me to use this small smartphone and make this bad graph reading error.

  50. Ms Karlin-Gerard says

Lol – it just shows how clueless and pathetic you are. There has been about 50 farcical incidents in Banderastan, just on the Coronavirus issue alone.

Because you dont know the country, the language or anything on ukraine- such embarrassments are expected

“two dozen”, well, actually the majority of people on a specially chartered flight from Vietnam to ukropia ( that they have probably been waiting 2 weeks at least, to be organised) breaking the quarantine rules upon entering a country affected by a catastrophic, comically inept handled health situation, compounded by a disastrous economic and social, is not good.

Russia, unlike ukropia is a functioning country with a functioning health system. It would be more common sense to just let Russia run Ukraine health system – or better for Ukraine to let Russia fully take control tof this failed cesspit nation.

As for fascists – it is fascist and brain dead to not relax the idiotic language laws to benefit the huge majority Russian speaking population and elite. A major health crisis demands clarity from officials in their speech and documents- not US /UPA sponsored cretinism

  51. I mean in just simple looking at numbers, the epidemic numbers seem around 2 weeks behind. Just very approximately, without checking – this was how I felt.

(Obviously UK has far smaller population, so this is not a great way to compare).

So checking now if I was accurate – we look at 14 March 2020, in UK. Numbers are not so far from Russia for Sunday.

  52. Ms Karlin-Gerard says

OK- 500 new cases is not good – even worse that I didn’t think it would get much above 450. However it could be an outlier and have to assume that the large majority have been from the 165000 already under controlled, medical observation for over a week.

Infections from transition within Russia is 25 percent. When we were at the 1000 case mark it was 20 pc. 75% of the 500 new cases still Moscow-centric

  53. Because you dont know the country, the language or anything on ukraine

Projection. You are speaking of yourself, and prove it in this post:

the idiotic language laws to benefit the huge majority Russian speaking population

With this statement, you’ve proven that you don’t know anything about “the country, the language or anything on ukraine.”

Ukraine in its current borders is majority Ukrainian-speaking.

When Ukraine still included Donbas and Crimea, it was about 46% Russian and 42% Ukrainian speaking:

    http://www.kiis.com.ua/materials/articles_HVE/16_linguaethnical.pdf

  54. Hopefully increasing proportion of people with medical masks, will reduce airborne infectivity levels (although I am a bit sceptical as they are not air sealed at all).

It’s already starting to be a bit more difficult to buy a protective respirator for shipping in Russia. It was possible to buy UNIX 6100 last week though (this is what Putin is wearing), so I would recommend UNIX (as the respirator company, not operating system).

  55. sudden death says

Given the news coming from RF today, any perfect respirator would be useless, if people themselves won’t alter their own usual behaviour. I mean, before puting that full face gas mask on, Putin himself several days ago was shaking bare hands with guy whom today was diagnosed as infected. And that guy, being proffesional doctor, also was making selfies with confirmed infected patients several weeks ago, while wearing just protective googles and simple halfmask on unshaven protruding beard, which is described as big NO NO in any user manual regarding PPE use…

  56. sudden death says
  57. People in Russia are behaving better than in North West Europe, where this is viewed like a fun holiday and opportunity to walk around for “fresh air” (groups of people walking everywhere without masks).

PPE situation in Russia is not great though. Putin is with the $80 UNIX 6100. But doctors and nurses still seem with medical masks.

  58. Aside from the beard allowing entry of air through the bottom of disposable FFP2 Aura mask, his goggles are not well matching to his face, and they look like he might have bought the wrong kind of goggles – vented safety goggles that allow outside air to circulate inside.

I guess with this lack of safety, it was inevitable that he would become infected. Hopefully he at least quarantines himself and avoids spreading his infection, more carefully than he was “protecting” himself.

  59. sudden death says

btw, even given his relatively youngish (45-50) age, this doctor seems to have slightly more elevated risk than usual, cause he is a bit overweight with noticable belly.

Putin, on the other hand, has way more risk due his age, but at least he can call Trump anytime and request a pack of remdavisir for prophylactic use or at least tell his secret agencies to steal it, if they haven’t done it yet 🙂

  60. PPE situation in Russia is not great though.

At least in St. Petersburg, the situation is changing rapidly. Today in the hypermarket, more than half of the visitors were wearing a mask. Playgrounds abruptly emptied (although the weather might have played a role here). Two days ago it was completely different.
As reported in the news today, volunteers in St. Petersburg distributed masks for free.

  61. At least Putin, in this unlikely scenario he could be infected, he would probably have healthy lungs for his age – does not smoke cigarettes, swims every day, and breathes probably quite clean, unpolluted air at his house (it’s West from pollution in Moscow).

  62. In North-West Europe now – most people do not wear masks.

General atmosphere (with warming weather), seems like a relaxed holiday. Young people running around buying a lot of alcohol in supermarkets, lots of children in the street (because of no school). Not sure such a relaxing “lockdown” will be sufficient for R0 < 1 with this virus.

    it was completely different.
As reported in the news today, volunteers in St. Petersburg distributed masks for free.

Medical mask can hopefully reduce airbone infectivity – of infected people – in Russia.

Still, I think everyone should try to buy something at least basic, cheap, face covering mask like UNIX 6100 (Russia), Moldex 9000 (European Union), 3M 6800 (USA).
