Cryonics

Although no one can quantify the probability of cryonics working, I estimate it is at least 90% β and certainly nobody can say it is zero. – Arthur C. Clark.
Cryonics is today the purest aspect of life extension in its radically transhumanist sense in that it is the only intervention that works. It is essentially a bet that preserving brain structure through vitrification keeps open the possibility of revival in a future where biomedical science has advanced to such a stage as to enable nanobots to reconstruct a body otherwise incompatible with life or scan the brain and digitally upload it.
I would recommend a cryonics plan if you have the disposable money as the ultimate “insurance policy” against dying before the Singularity.
Cryonics Companies
The major players today include:
- Tomorrow Bio π©πͺ: The newest and fastest growing cryonics company is Tomorrow Bio, with what I think is the strongest research base. It has expanded to North America, and its cryostorage facilities are located in Switzerland, and managed by the European Biostasis Foundation. (Disclosure: My plan is with them).
- Alcor πΊπΈ: Alcor and the Cryonics Institute are the American companies with the longest and most reliable pedigrees.
- Cryonics Institute πΊπΈ
- Spark Brain Preservation πΊπΈ (formerly Oregon Cryonics)
- Kriorus π·πΊ: Kriorus used to be the only viable European option, but I can no longer recommend them following their internal corporate dispute that resulted in the attempted “kidnapping” of some of the patients. Not a serious way to run any company, let alone a cryonics company, even disregarding Russia’s political/geopolitical risks. I would only still recommend it if you reside in Russia.
Startups
- Cryopets – startup for whole-body pet cryopreservation (Kai Micah Mills)
- Until Labs – more “medical” but immediately practical topic of organ cryopreservation (Laura Deming)
Research Organizations
- European Biostasis Foundation – nonprofit basic and translational research in biostasis
- Cryo DAO $CRYO – decentralized science organization that funds research projects within cryonics. (Hydra DAO is closely aligned).

- Tomorrow Bio is really useful – it has a Codex, a blog, and now an active YouTube account.

Sociology/Psychology of Cryonics
You are probably convinced of the case of cryonics for yourself, but how do you persuade older relatives to sign up? Ralph Merkle: “Don’t bother with “logical” arguments. Go for emotional blackmail! Just think of how much grief you will inflict on me by your absence during my own extremely long lifespan.”
Philosophy of Cryonics
Here’s the basic reading list.
- Tomorrow Bio’s Biostasis Codex (ongoing) as the most comprehensive case for cryonics as of today.
- Ralph Merkle: Pascal’s Wager and Cryonics (~2008) – most succinct statement of the argument
- Robert C.W. Ettinger: The Prospect of Immortality (1962) – the foundational work, and the author would go on to found the Cryonics Institute.
