Cryonics

Although no one can quantify the probability of cryonics working, I estimate it is at least 90% β€” and certainly nobody can say it is zero. – Arthur C. Clark.

Cryonics is today the purest aspect of life extension in its radically transhumanist sense in that it is the only intervention that works. It is essentially a bet that preserving brain structure through vitrification keeps open the possibility of revival in a future where biomedical science has advanced to such a stage as to enable nanobots to reconstruct a body otherwise incompatible with life or scan the brain and digitally upload it.

I would recommend a cryonics plan if you have the disposable money as the ultimate “insurance policy” against dying before the Singularity.

Cryonics Companies

The major players today include:

  • Tomorrow Bio πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ: The newest and fastest growing cryonics company is Tomorrow Bio, with what I think is the strongest research base. It has expanded to North America, and its cryostorage facilities are located in Switzerland, and managed by the European Biostasis Foundation. (Disclosure: My plan is with them).
  • Alcor πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ: Alcor and the Cryonics Institute are the American companies with the longest and most reliable pedigrees.
  • Cryonics Institute πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
  • Spark Brain Preservation πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ (formerly Oregon Cryonics)
  • Kriorus πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί: Kriorus used to be the only viable European option, but I can no longer recommend them following their internal corporate dispute that resulted in the attempted “kidnapping” of some of the patients. Not a serious way to run any company, let alone a cryonics company, even disregarding Russia’s political/geopolitical risks. I would only still recommend it if you reside in Russia.

Startups

  • Cryopets – startup for whole-body pet cryopreservation (Kai Micah Mills)
  • Until Labs – more “medical” but immediately practical topic of organ cryopreservation (Laura Deming)

Sociology/Psychology of Cryonics

You are probably convinced of the case of cryonics for yourself, but how do you persuade older relatives to sign up? Ralph Merkle: “Don’t bother with “logical” arguments. Go for emotional blackmail! Just think of how much grief you will inflict on me by your absence during my own extremely long lifespan.”
