Virgin Starving IQ Researcher vs. Chad Nepotistic Fund Director

IQ researcher Richard Lynn, the initiator of research into national differences in IQ and co-inventor of the FLynn Effect, has just released his autobiography, Memoirs of a Dissident Psychologist.

I have yet to read most of it, though I can already highly recommend it for those with an interest in the subject.

But one point has already been highlighted by Emil Kirkegaard – Lynn going public on what has long been an open secret in that community involving J. Philippe Rushton, and the sad history of the Pioneer Fund:

On his death, Phil left the control of the Charles Darwin Research Institute in the hands of his son Stephen. The history of this bequest is that Harry Weyher had run the Pioneer Fund for many years until his death in 2002 when he designated Phil as the president, and his own wife and me as directors. During the next years, Phil ran the Pioneer Fund and on 13 Feb, 2010, he transferred $900,000 from the Pioneer Fund to the Charles Darwin Research Institute of which he was the president and his son Stephen was a trustee. Stephen was an associate professor of education at the University of Southern Florida.

On 14 August, 2012, Phil transferred a further $1 million from the Pioneer Fund to the Charles Darwin Research Institute. At the same time he resigned as president of the Pioneer Fund and handed it over to me with what was left of its funds, about $1 million. Phil explained to me that his intention was that I would use the Pioneer Fund funds to support research on race differences and such other projects as I chose, and he would use the Charles Darwin Research Institute to support research on life history, heritability and his other interests.

Shortly after Stephen Rushton acquired control of the Charles Darwin Research Institute he changed its name to the JSP Education Foundation (JSP stands for John Stephen Philippe). It seems that his intention was to dissociate it from the evolutionary psychology his father intended should be supported. He has written to a correspondent: “The JSP Foundation is an entity completely outside of Pioneer Fund. I established a scholarship program here at the University of Southern Florida ”. The JSP Educational Foundation’s 990 return in 2012 gives the mission statement as follows: “The charity has expanded its charitable purposes to include educational opportunities for all youths and underprivileged children through programs that use sailing activities to teach teamwork, responsibility, reasoning, critical thinking and general life skills. The charity will also use its resources to support other exempt organizations including educational institutions with similar goals to help youths of all cultural backgrounds”.

This is a sad story. We would have hoped and expected that Phil would have left the Charles Darwin Research Institute funds in the hands of people in whom he could have had confidence that they would use these to further the causes in which he believed and for which they were donated. So, in the end, Phil let us all down and betrayed the trust placed in him. Phil also appointed Stephen as his literary executor and left his autobiography for him to publish. As of December, 2019, he has not got round to doing so.

Funnily enough, given the context of the father’s work, the case of Stephen Rushton is one of those cases where the apple fell far from the tree, at least ideologically. Chances of getting that money back are basically zero.

This is why I laughed at hit pieces claiming some crimethinker or other had received money from the Pioneer Fund. The Chad Rushton – a brilliant man, but also a fast life strategist with an unfortunate propensity for nepotism – had long reduced it to penury.

I do question Lynn’s research, because he consistently claims that majority non-white USA has an average IQ of 100, while claims that various majority or even 100% white European countries have an average IQ of around 90 or lower.

I’m surprised Lynn is so popular on the right, because his research is basically arguing implicitly that Anglicised Hispanics and blacks are just as intelligent as various European ethnicities if not more so.

The first time I saw a clip of J. Philippe Rushton, I was impressed with how soft-spoken he could be in the face of angry Bioleninists. But wasn’t he something of a cad himself? Didn’t he have a negro-mistress or something?

Immigration boosts American IQ because they get the cream of the crop

  5. artichoke says

We get the cream of the crop from China and India, good graduates of their top universities where admission is more insanely competitive than the most competitive in the USA.

We get the lower half of the barrel from Central America and Mexico, where their professional class would never think of sneaking in illegally. Why should they leave their nice lifestyles in their home countries to do such a thing? They are not sending their best, but perhaps their most energetic.

  6. That Would Be Telling says

We get the cream of the crop from China and India, good graduates of their top universities where admission is more insanely competitive than the most competitive in the USA.

A few of the Chinese in IT I’ve worked with were zeros, enough to doubt the above claim. I also note a lot of them get their degrees in the US, where they cheat like crazy.

Your claim is flatly wrong for India, if for no other reason that the country has effectively no top universities if you factor in its huge population. Most of the very few ones who get into the ITTs don’t get computer science slots, and spin their wheels in another engineering major until they graduate and can switch to the IT sector. The ITTs are said to be mostly OK to a bit subpar in instruction and equipment, their great value comes from collecting a group of the very smartest in the nation, something you also see in some of our truly top universities, some of which also care about undergraduate education.

Mostly, the Indians we get aren’t smart, nor well educated, and plenty of the smart ones are bitter about losing out on the exam lottery, having to attend low ranked and quality state schools, or even worse private ones. We do get some very good although not as conscientious by Western standards ones that I’ve been happy to work with, but they’re far outnumbered by those who are effectively scamming the system. We also import their caste system along with the wonderful food.

  7. Is there a single example of an NGO that has been around that long and hasn’t cucked?

The Ford Foundation probably makes Henry Ford turn in his grave.

  8. The Pioneer Fund is currently run by Richard Lynn and Gerhard Meisenberg, who are both – so far as I can tell – honest people (both intellectually and, unlike Rushton, in terms of personal probity).

Meisenberg was himself “canceled” from the editorial board of the journal Intelligence and has to do his research from a Dominican university.

  9. Guess I would count the transference as “having cucked once.”

Not sure about Meisenberg, but Richard Lynn is quite old (90!), and I guess that invites the question about who will succeed him. Perhaps, there are other researchers on tap…

  10. SIMP simp says

Lynn’s research on national IQ is garbage. The first time I saw his data about Romania he was claiming a 10 IQ points gap between romanian men and women.
A romanian study showed it was bullshit:
    https://sci-hub.tw/https://doi.org/10.1016/j.intell.2016.06.007

The current paper investigated mean and variance sex differences
for six cognitive ability measures across six nationally representative
samples from Romania (between 1101 and 4000 for each measure, totaling 15,327 participants). The results show that fewer than 10% of
the comparisons exhibit mean sex differences. Even when mean differences were observed, the effect sizes were mostly small and they were
not replicated across measures. A very similar pattern emerged when
    examining sex differences in variance.
The random and non-replicable pattern of differences observed in
the current research seems to support the conclusion that any sex
mean or variance differences are likely spurious and the result of sampling or measurement errors than substantive and stable effects. This
conclusion is supported for both general intelligence and second-level
(more specific) abilities (e.g. performance vs. reasoning, verbal vs. performance, fluid vs. crystallized).

Cream is highly contentious given diploma mills are rife in those places plus both groups have different moral standards compared to your average person of European descent.

    So… he’s bought himself a yacht?

  15. prime noticer says

ok, but if Lynn had just invested that money in Amazon stock in August 2012, it would be worth 10 million dollars today. this stuff is not hard at all, either. any of the tech stocks would have at least tripled the money by now.

unfortunately, these IQ guys just aren’t that smart. how you run out of money in this decade is beyond me. once the Obama people decided to go all in on printing, you couldn’t possibly miss.

any organization that is having money troubles is run by people who are just not that smart, period. never in history has it been easier to make money than it is right now. the guys who manage the endowments of the big universities are running up obscene numbers now.

hell, i would volunteer to run the finances of these small time groups myself, if it wasn’t so extremely dangerous now to be associated with them in any way.

i manage millions in family assets and i just laugh at how not smart some of the professional money managers are that my family has employed over the years. WTF are they even talking about, i wondered sometimes in meetings. any money manager over 50 should probably be ignored, since they come from what is effectively a different time period and they have really BAD ideas about generating and creating wealth. mutual funds? fucking bonds? seriously?

  16. prime noticer says

“Chances of getting that money back are basically zero.”

they could make the money back easily in this market, the real offense is this Stephen guy who is just another totally useless Education professor. give him the million? helping kids by teaching them how to sail? yeah ok. you might as well just burn the money.

it’s mind boggling how much cash these Education people can waste. they’re giving africans a run for their money in the negative ROI on wealth transfer gauntlet.

  17. Astuteobservor II says

Hate to burst your bubble. The students we get from China these days are the one who can’t get into the top unis in China.

The AI researchers (who are done with school) we get from China on the hand could very well be top class. Silicon valley is still very attractive to them. The chinese has even talked about how alot of their graduates ends up in silicon valley and they should do something to stop the brain drain.

These efforts to teach urban youths boating, swimming, and teamwork will surely backfire when society collapses – it will make them good pirates.

  20. Daniel Chieh says

More chad than we even knew.

  21. Your judgement of Chinese and Indians needs to be corrected for the fact that 100 IQ is not very high. So 100 IQ people may look dumb to you but they still bring up the average. Overall I would say high IQ foreigners are a detriment because they game the system and make ethnic politics with their high IQ.

  22. artichoke says

I don’t like bringing in IQ 120 and 130 foreigners. They are taking positions directly from America’s potential middle class. We should bring in laborers on fixed-term seasonal working permits (don’t bring family), or O1-visa folks who are really exceptional, and giving them EB1-1 green cards. The great mass of H1B’s should stay home and make their own countries great.
