Unresearch

The #BLM witch hunts have spawned what is probably the most intense orgy of “unpersonings” to date.

As of the time of writing, two names that many of my readers being familiar with, MSU’s Steve Hsu (genomics of IQ) and now GMU’s Robin Hanson (libertarian economist/transhumanist), now in the SJW limelight.

However, what I am finding even more remarkable is a quiet move to retract problematic articles that are at odds with the reining with the reigning Blank Slate ideology:

Peter Frost has blogged about how a 2012 article by the late J. Philippe Rushton is being retracted:

Rushton, J. Philippe, and Donald I. Templer. 2012. “Do Pigmentation and the Melanocortin System Modulate Aggression and Sexuality in Humans as They Do in Other Animals?Personality and Individual Differences 53 (1): 4–8.

Is its methodology perfect? I don’t know, not having read it. But at least it is, at a minimum, at the very least loosely based on facts:

On this note, a reminder that we live in a society where papers with titles like “The Perilous Whiteness of Pumpkins” and “Glaciers, Gender, and Science” get published. I do not see them getting retracted.

So long as that is the case the onus should not be on us to minutely defend every last detail and claim in already peer-reviewed HBD/psychometrics papers that fall afoul of SJW hysterics. (Reminder that intelligence research is the only part of psychology not subject to a replication crisis).

Meanwhile, some “career-oriented” (putting it diplomatically) researchers have taken the initiative in withdrawing their old papers themselves. I am sure that the timing is a pure coincidence.

Watch this space: They are going to start doing mass retractions of psychometrics papers.

The RationalWiki characterization of IQ research as pseudoscience to become literally true, at least in the West. No matter that its inventors also essentially founded modern statistics.

But they were also dead white men who supported eugenics so well past time to unperson them, as UCL has just done, renaming buildings named after Francis Galton and Karl Pearson.

(Fun fact: Svante Arrhenius, the creator of the first global warming models as well as a eugenicist, Pearson was also a socialist.)

If you are interested in doing non-ideological social sciences, you should start thinking about becoming independently wealthy – though its an open question how long even that remains possible.

Alternatively, think about rebasing outside the West. Because the Neo-Lysenkoism is here to stay.

  4. No wonder the vanguard of woke universities are also scrapping standardized tests. Measurement is now a sin and so they will break all the rulers.

  5. Dacian Julien Soros says

First, it’s silly to demonize someone using a Russian name, if you are a Russian. Americans, who fostered some of the most impressive mass murderers and fraudsters, do not do so.

It’s doubly silly when you take into account that Lysenko was the Mendel of epigenetics. Yes, he might have had quasireligious beliefs in his theories, he might have been clueless about molecular mechanisms, and he might have massaged the numbers, but so did Mendel. It is a fact that the grandsons of the Dutch survivors of the 1945 hunger have DNA alterations inherited from their grandparents. Lysenko did nothing wrong.

Third, when the tide goes out, you see who is an attention whore and who is a transhumanist. You’ll find soon that there are essentially no transhumanists in America. Not sure what will it say about you though, being left without any lard mount to worship.

You mean, proclaiming that genetics is a “bourgeois pseudo-science” and directing repressive state apparatus against all geneticists is “nothing wrong”? What is wrong, then? Saying that 2×2=4?

Many years ago some blogger, I forget who, maintained a list of people who had been fired or otherwise ostracized for failing to heed leftist pieties regarding blacks and other sacred groups–e.g. Heritage giving the boot to Jason Richwine, National Review ejecting John Derbyshire. The list covered many years and included maybe a hundred people. Fast forward to June 2020 and a single week probably yields a list of “canceled” people that is equally long. The witch-hunters are casting their nets ever wider, with kids getting college admission offers rescinded over what they wrote at 14 and everyone from veteran journalists to leftist data wonks and liberal priests losing jobs for expressing the slightest skepticism about the BLM agenda. It’s just amazing how bad it has got, how difficult it has become to publicly maintain an independence of mind.

Just read on twitter that Steve Hsu has been booted from his vice president position at MSU.

  17. Dacian Julien Soros says

Sometimes you have to break the eggs in order to make an omelette, or to create the field of epigenetics. Just because Einstein was not supported by a murderous dictator and was generally polite, it doesn’t mean he didn’t describe Newton as childish and naive. According to Einstein, Newton only cared about observables, while Einstein was also interested in the fruit of his imagination.

“Imagination is more important than knowledge”, Einstein said verbatim. I think you are an experimentalist, so you would freak out when someone less exalted (me, or your students) would say such crap. So why not allow Lysenko some imagination? Why not cut hm some slack?

We live in a world of Einstein worshippers, although most of us rarely care about mass defects or bodies moving at speeds near that of light. You just learn in school that Einstein was a revolutionary who essentially destroyed Newton. One day, I hope, we will acknowledge Lysenko as the one who went one step ahead of Morgan and Avery. Yes, inherited genetic changes are a rare scenario, but I don’t care more or less about epigenetics than I care about the speed of gravitational fields changes. Why not worship another student of the exception?

I am only half pulling your leg. It’s all a game of power. Einsteinlatry is the product of Americans winning WWII. Einsteinlatry, much like Freudlatry, seem, post factum, mere obedience experiments. It’s not like they were the only smart people in their field, or that they were infallible. I hope that Putler, upon winning WWIII, will use Lysenko as his totem. It’s more credible than Freud, probably just as god in term of healthcare outcomes, and far suited to a winner compared to, say, a saddo like Solzhenitsyn.

  21. Don’t really know much about Steve Hsu’s scientific accomplishments, but he never seemed to me to be cut out for administration, especially at a Big Ten school.

2017 is a bit late to be interviewing with Steven Molyneux; and Dr. Hsu did have some inflammatory takes on gorillas and all that. Hsu should be a lesson to all Chinese academics out there.
You gotta learn to appreciate rap music. Start with Eminem as intro if you have to.

  22. Blinky Bill says
  23. Hsu struck me as a quite talented administrator; he had vision, recognized new and important problems and areas for growth, and had energy and practical know-how. I always thought he would make a good university president.

I really do feel like we’re living through an inflection point in American history, one that has sent this country on a downwards trajectory that I can’t see us ever recovering from. There’s so much discontent and anger, so much destructive energy with nothing to hold it back. How do we un-woke ourselves? The bourgeoisie have worked the masses into a frenzy with a view towards destabilizing the Trump presidency and the Republican party; can’t they see how dangerous this all is? The Blue Tribers tell the mob to demand Hsu’s head; did they ever consider that the next head the mob asks for might be theirs?

When I was in college I took a course on the French Revolution. I remember the professor explaining that nobody really knew the origins of the French nobility (most likely some ancient military campaign) but that nonetheless this small segment of the population lorded its privilege over the rest of the population for centuries. I always wondered how 1% of the population–based solely on some cheesy birthright–could exert so much control over the masses. I couldn’t understand how it worked. I understand now. A confident, energetic and ruthless minority can pretty easily take control of a much larger group, provided that larger group lacks identity or any semblance of class consciousness. History is made by determined minorities (no pun intended).

Holy shit. This opened my eyes.

  26. I think it was back in 2015 or so, Hsu had a post about the over-sensitivity of gorillas and that gorillas are strong and dangerous, will hit you hard, if you aren’t careful around them etc. Bet, he’s taken that down. A post, btw, that Sailer aped. (How much time does Sailer have as voice on the net?) But, clearly Hsu didn’t mind pressing some buttons and Trump’s win probaby got him a bit loose. He was kinda cocky to begin with.

But, yeah, I’ve said this before. Whites, Asians, Hispanics, Blacks all exploit each other. Blacks especially seem to get used as spear tip. The new thing is blacks have more ability to push back than ever. Not the end of the world. In fact, I think it’s only fair.

  27. One of the things that surprised and dismayed me about Asia was how popular and prevalent rap and hip hop was in clubs and bars.

In NYC you can find lots of bars and clubs that play good music, but in much of Asia they just love rap. Too bad.

But my theory is that as a civilization gets more upright and repressive, it is more and more attracted to the primitive – and in extreme cases, the ugly, obnoxious, aggressive, primitive, if the civilization is too represive.

And places like China or Seoul are unusually repressive, so they particularly enjoy rap.

  28. You should read Nassim Taleb about kosher food, and libertarian public choice theory to understand what is happening.

It is always in the self interest of the powers that be to please a ruthless minority. In doing so, they plant the seeds of their own destruction. Works like clockwork.

As for how to unwoke, wait for reaction. French ended up with Napoleon. Sad news we got Trump, not quite the same level. Worse news we will get Biden next, his handlers only care about empire, so they will likely allow this institutional rot to spread, even though it would be to their detriment.

I have always said US can afford to be an empire or a country, but not both. We will see what choice we make.

  29. The thing is, to operate, society requires a certain degree of competence. For various reasons, blacks do not have that and their handlers are preoccupied elsewhere, and will not provide it.

And yes, blacks do have legitimate complaints about mistreatment and abuse. But being a victim does not automatically guarantee successful results. Blacks had legitimate complaints in 1968 Detroit. What followed didn’t help Detroit or the blacks. We are now trying to roll this out nationwide. Our only hope is to try and get the handlers’ attention back. Or replace the handlers.

  38. The Hard Life of Homo Erectus says

Haven’t spent enough time in other parts of East Asia to comment, but the nightlife in China cannot be compared to that in the West. The very concept of “club” and “bar” is a direct copy of a Western phenomenon rather than an organic manifestation of Chinese culture and thus appeals to a very small subset of the Chinese population. In Shanghai where I lived something like 30-60% of the clientele in popular clubs and bars consisted of Western expats. Going to a club was something most reputable Chinese girls would not be caught dead doing, which of course also limited the participation of Chinese young males as well. All of which is to say, extrapolating the music played in Chinese clubs as a reflection of modern Chinese culture isn’t very representative. You’d be better served going to a KTV (karaoke type establishment) if your goal was to get a feel for the type of music young Chinese enjoy, as they are much more popular as a nightlife option than clubs and bars are.

  39. Traditional Chinese religions would most probably take a dim view of transhumanism, since you can not transfer your spiritual essence into a machine, and you will basically be a Necron, nonheretical Christianity and Islam should also prohibit it, so your option is the Antarctic? So maybe the transhumanists are the C’tan? With their false promises of immortality?

  40. Which is weird, because traditionally conquering elites like the Jurchen, the Mongols, and the Khitans tried to co-opt talented members of the majority to work for them, in an effort to legitimize their rule. Like how the Yuan Dynasty relied on Han Chinese civil servants to run the government.

    The Neanderthal Problem

The NYTimes magazine describes efforts to resurrect extinct species such as mammoths. Let’s suppose this is possible. Perhaps it will even be possible with Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo Erectus and other pre-modern human types.

Consider the following thought experiment. Imagine thousands of Neanderthals on some privately held land in Siberia, perhaps the secret project of a reclusive billionaire oligarch.

It’s very likely these Neanderthals, although able to interbreed with humans, and probably capable of speech, will be on average considerably less intelligent than humans. If I had to guess I would suppose their average adult IQ to be about 70, or -2 SD relative to modern humans. You might wonder how they could have survived for 300k+ years with such modest intelligence, but based on my experiences with 5-10 year old kids I don’t think that a sub-adult level of maximum intelligence precludes the ability to form societies and function as hunter-gatherers. (Apes survive with even less cognitive ability.) I just don’t think that higher developments (e.g., invention of writing) are likely for such a population. What Homo Sapiens accomplished in 50-100k years far outstrips Neanderthal accomplishments over a much longer period of time.

Modern humans differ from each other at about 1 in 1000 places in the genome, whereas a Neanderthal and a human differ at a few per 1000 places. Some subset of these additional differences cause them to be broader, more powerfully muscled, and, most likely, less intelligent. (See Neanderthals dumb?)

Now to the problem: how should we integrate these Neanderthals into modern society?

Perhaps we should not integrate them — better to leave them alone on protected lands, to live their ”natural” (= nasty, brutish and short?) lives. But what if some Neanderthals express the wish to join our society? How should we best help them?

I think it’s likely that no amount of special education or training will allow average Neanderthals to be successful in cognitively demanding jobs. They might face significant discrimination, given their appearance.

However, let us suppose that in this future the technology exists to modify the genes which cause the cognitive gap between moderns and Neanderthals. Suppose it is possible, through genetic engineering, to modify the genomes of Neanderthal embryos, causing their brains to develop as ours do. Would it not be our moral duty to make this modification available to Neanderthal parents who want it?

    Extra credit questions:

    1) Is it “racist” to make the assumptions used in our hypothetical?

    2) Is it also our moral duty to make similar modifications available to human parents who happen to be well below average in cognitive ability?

These fuckwads might impose neo-Lysenkoism, but their children will probably inadvertently impose “hard” HBD as they stop giving a fuck about feelzies because they’re in total power, and the previously useful minorities become a nuisance to them.

  47. One big problem with IQ theory is there a need to select for high IQ or moderately high IQ among females? I mean if the assigned role of women is to stay at the house and take care of the children, cook, clean the house, do laundry, and sex on demand, why is IQ that is above low average necessary at all, there seems to be no need for an IQ above low average if women have been designed to stay in the house only and take care of the house and children.

The “literally wrong in every way and requires no effort or thought” spiel is just a bugman’s instinctive reaction against thoughtcrime and cognitive dissonance, nothing more.

    Anyways, back to the topic.

Dacian is right. In the Lysenko vs Vavilov scandal, Lysenko was on the right side of history and science.

Lysenko played dirty and pandered to the bad guys in power, this is true. However:

    a) His understanding of genetics and heritability was broadly correct, and was proved as such later. Vavilov’s wasn’t.

    b) He had real-life accomplishments to prove his theories, accomplishments that helped, e.g., the Soviets win WWII. Vavilov never really achieved anything of actual importance as far as I know. (As to be expected from the school of science that thought cross-breeding men with apes would be a brilliant idea.)

Lysenko is demonized because he was a peasant who came from nowhere, while Vavilov was a ‘citizen of the world’ who spent most of his time traveling around the world and making connections with important Anglos.

  55. Maybe IQ research on difference between races can be limited in the interest of maintaining social harmony in an ethnically diverse society? Like I am sure Singapore discourages IQ research on differences in IQ between Malays and Chinese, or why Malays are genetically lazier than Indians and China, China also I am sure suppresses IQ research on IQ score differences between Tibetians and Han Chinese, in the interest of maintaining peace and stability, or between Uyghurs and Han Chinese, and Japanese research institutions will also not really publicize studies that show that Rkukyuans have IQ scores that are a few points lower than mainland Japs.

Hopefully Dr Hsu will be able to find a position with a genetics company that has the fortitude to conduct itself in a scientific manner…seeking and speaking the truth. I am afraid Dr. Hsu’s desire to continue as a professor of physics at MSU, in peace,…is a pipe dream.

But this is irrelevant. Lothrop Stoddard laid out the real reason Europeans fought and Asians fight now, and so it will be for Americans:

In practical politics the vital thing is not what men really are, but what they think they are. This simple truth, so often overlooked, is actually of tremendous import. It gives the key to many a riddle otherwise insoluble.

The European war is a striking case in point. That war is very generally regarded as being one of “race.” The idea certainly lends to the struggle much of its bitterness and uncompromising fury. And yet, from the genuine racial standpoint, it is nothing of the kind. Ethnologists have proved conclusively that, apart from certain palaeolithic survivals and a few historically recent Asiatic intruders, Europe is inhabited by only three stocks: (1) the blond, long-headed “Nordic” race, (2) the brown, round-headed “Alpine” race, (3) the brunet, long-headed “Mediterranean” race. These races are so dispersed and intermingled that every European nation is built on at least two of these stocks, while most are compounded of all three.
Strictly speaking, therefore, the present European war is not a race-war at all, but a domestic struggle between closely knit blood-relatives.

Now all this is known to most well-educated Europeans. And yet it has not made the slightest difference. The reason is that, in spite of everything, the Europeans believe that they fit into an entirely different race-category. They think they belong to the “Teutonic” race, the “Latin” race, the “Slav” race, or the “Anglo-Saxon” race. The fact that these so-called “races” simply do not exist but are really historical differentiations, based on language and culture, which cut sublimely athwart genuine race-lines, — all that is quite beside the point. Your European may apprehend this intellectually, but it will have no effect upon his conduct. In his heart of hearts he will still believe himself a Latin, a Teuton, an Anglo-Saxon, or a Slav.

For his blood-race he will not stir: for his thought-race he will die. For the glory of the dolichocephalic “Nordic” or the brachicephalic “Alpine” he will not prick his finger or wager a groat; for the triumph of the “Teuton” or the “Slav” he will give his last farthing and shed his heart’s blood. In other words:
“Not what men really are, but what they think they are!”

  58. Still, if I were him, I’d be looking for options elsewhere. My guess is he will next come under attack by crazed SJW professors and spend his time playing bureaucratic defense, much like Linda Gottfredson.

That is exactly what I posted on his web site. See my comment #61 here.

  59. No matter what you do in life…the more intelligent the better.

  60. I think a 110 IQ or above white woman will be bored out of her skull under White Shariah, but ymmv.

  61. No, his post isn’t literally wrong in “every way”. Even if you disagree with his interpretation of history, he used correct punctuation, spelled all the names right and committed no anachronisms.

If you are going to be pedantic, I did not use the word “literally.”

So here you are, being wrong as usual.

Obviously I wasn’t referring to spelling or grammar lol.

The “literally wrong in every way and requires no effort or thought” spiel

Again, I didn’t use that word. So you are wrong again.

is just a bugman’s instinctive reaction against thoughtcrime and cognitive dissonance

“bugman” (wrong) ” instinctive reaction” (wrong) “against thoughtcrime and cognitive dissonance” (wrong – reaction to stupid and factually incorrect claims)

    Dacian is right.

    Wrong.

In the Lysenko vs Vavilov scandal, Lysenko was on the right side of history and science.

    Wrong and wrong.

Lysenko played dirty and pandered to the bad guys in power, this is true.

    Correct.

His understanding of genetics and heritability was broadly correct, and was proved as such later. Vavilov’s wasn’t.

    Wrong, wrong, and wrong.

Lysenkoism, for those who are curious:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism

    Russian wiki is more detailed:

    https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9B%D1%8B%D1%81%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%BA%D0%BE,_%D0%A2%D1%80%D0%BE%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BC_%D0%94%D0%B5%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%81%D0%BE%D0%B2%D0%B8%D1%87

So out of 12 of your statements, 11 have been wrong.

Lysenko was a Ukrainian peasant from Poltava.

I wonder if Lysenko’s career is some sort of elaborate and perfectly executed (no pun intended) trolling revenge upon Russians and the USSR.

  62. What will happen to you in Singapore if you say that Malays are inherently lazier and stupider than Chinese and Indians and should not be given the same civil and political rights?

  63. And you say it in public, like with a megaphone in the middle of Orchard Road?

  64. Maybe IQ research on difference between races can be limited in the interest of maintaining social harmony in an ethnically diverse society?

No intelligent human gives a fuck about social harmony. The truth shall set you free. Truth trumps all.
A true scientist seeks and speaks the truth.

To my knowledge the only intelligent words spoken by Gloria Steinem was The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.

Of course the context is important.

  66. But this is irrelevant. Lothrop Stoddard laid out the real reason Europeans fought and Asians fight now, and so it will be for Americans

Yes, Stoddard had certainly deserved his place as one of America’s most prominent public intellectuals, and although he was purged over 80 years ago, his books are certainly well worth reading.

For example, his analysis of the various contending European countries in the early years of WWI was the best I’ve ever read:

    https://www.unz.com/book/lothrop_stoddard__present-day-europe/

  67. What did happen to Steve Hsu claims? Few years ago he was very gung-ho about GWAS. He claimed that with large enough samples the missing heritability problem would be solved. He had some of his minions finding the polygenic score based on 50,000 or more SNPs to model IQ and the educational attainment using the Lasso method (or as he called it the compressed sensing method). But the missing heritability problem is where it was. Only 9% of variance in IQ (educational attainment) data could be explained. He wrote another paper outlying the approach with the nonlinear (quadratic) polygenic score but then went silent w/o producing any results? Why did they stop? Did they solve the problem and found the Holy Grail of IQism only to have their research silenced and appropriated by DARPA or did they realize that it is all bunk and no more than 9%-11% of variance can be explained with genes? That 9%-11% is due to data stratification. Did he come to realization that the biological IQism is dead?

  68. Mr. Lothrop Stoddard address on his peace mission to Bloods and Crips: Your genetic distances is too small to fight against each other. Even the spectral distance of 3000 angstroms between the colors red and blue of your tennis shoes does not justify the gang war.

Materialist reductionism makes people really stupid. The HBDists are really funny.

BLM in the UK have been trying hard to unperson Churchill and Rhodes, although their campaign to do this has lost momentum because they underestimated just how little the rest of the world cares about or is even aware of British historical figures.

They tried to make toppling Churchill their “topple George Washington” moment, but it just never caught on.

That advocates of various statistical tools have over promised on what those tools can accomplish, doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with biological IQism. You are misdiagnosing the problem.

  71. EldnahYm says

I am convinced the positives universities contribute are outweighed by the negatives. Therefore, I don’t want to see a mere reform of universities, a clearing of the monasteries is more appropriate. The more enemies created by the university system, the greater the chances of destroying them.

There are too many people going to universities, too much money invested in them, too many worthless publications, too many administrators, too many destructive ideas generated there and influencing the larger society, too many lies about how “education” makes people’s lives better etc.

I never paid much attention to Peter Turchin’s “elite overproduction” theories, but they seem like a useful framework here. Right now useful people like hereditarian and other politically incorrect researchers are being targeted, but ultimately the SJWs will turn on each other as they squabble over the smaller numbers of positions.

Unlike many other institutions, we can get by alright without most of the universities, even in the short term. I see no reason not to cheer on the destruction of universities, especially in the U.S. where the system is important international as well domestically. This is a case where the costs of accelerationism may not even be that great.

I don’t mind the starting intention as long as data is true, not made up.

Problem is, in any large dataset you can select the data supporting any idea you happen to like. Each piece of data would be true, but your picture won’t be the whole truth. It can lead to totally untrue conclusions, based on carefully cherry-picked true data. That’s what the “social science” mostly does: cherry-picking. When you can do that, you don’t even need to make up data to support a lie.

  88. Ron, one of the most startling (in a good way) aspects of UR is the revival of racial/eugenics folks, which I interpret as a way to modulate our current “race talk”, which seems to me a rhetorical one-way street. Folks such as Stoddard get slagged for their “scientific racism”, sure, but our “juridical/administrative racism” (imposed on White and Asian innocents, e. g.) needs some serious pushback.

  89. Dacian Julien Soros says

My first proper job in America was in science. My boss was also of Eastern European origins, but they tried hard to integrate. They was watching ball sports and Hollywood crap, so that they would discuss with the natural-citizen faculty, at lunch time.

Worse, they was smitten with all the sciency fads. For example, they was stans for Craig Venter and James Lovelock. Neither did something that I can relate to, be it penicillin or a new device to beat your wife in an ergonomic manner. Back in those days, it was even more obvious that fanbois cared about Gay-Ass hypothesis, whereas I had to pay a rent.

It was a disaster, in more immediate way. I nearly broke my wrists trying to build on a famous “discovery” of a wanker I still see giving TED talks – and I was hired as a programmer! The only grad student dropped out. Several undergrads wasted their time and got no publication. I learned quite a lot about neurons, but I never made a penny out of that. The boss did not renew their grant, and moved to a company.

I concluded they was an idiot because I honestly believed in Putin’s election, while they thought Benford law proved otherwise. I’m like, how come Benfird wasn’t used next day after the 2000 presidential elections in Florida, in a court of law? It’s obvious Benford doesn’t carry any weight IRL, so why do you worship it when it comes to demonization of our part of the world?

But I got cured of scientism. The more famous the “innovator”, the less likely his shit will replicate, and the more likely it’s just another Ivy or Oxbrige narc. If he died a while ago, and people still accept his ideas, it MAY be true.

As a corollary, since I stopped reading science journals, I only hear about scientists from the Daily Mail. It’s obvious to anyone that if a scientist is suitable for Daily Mail, that scientist is most likely a POS. Fauci? Likely sciopath, and a presidents’ sycophant in his spare time. That long-haired chloroquine user? Grandiose psychosis nutcase.

Now, transhumanism is a field of science that failed to innovate anything, but there’s quite a few transhumanists in the Daily Mail. In theory, it’s a whole field of dickheads, but, in a pinch, I can only name George Church and the Jew who wanted to lose weight in exercise-orthogonal manner.

They were fat by my standards. I don’t look up new pictures of them after dieting, so who cares if they lost weight? It’s still an easy way to make fun of them.

    Is it clear now?

  90. Daniel Chieh says

You realize that our kind host is a transhumanist, yes?

  91. Mr. Hack says

Of course he does. So what? Can you name any tranhumanists that have truly innovated anything new? Something really worthwhile that has benefited mankind? Maybe there is, but they certainly aren’t household names…

  92. There are people who invented all those amazing prosthetic limbs. They may not view themselves as transhumanists, but their technology really helps injured people. It is a very simple logic to follow – as we strive to help the injured and the sick, we must do all we can to make them function better and better. If we follow this path, it is only a matter of time before we will get better function out of tech that we build over what we get in an ordinary way.

And people will always want to get better. I mean, if you are getting breast implants anyway, why not get the ones with built in battery pack so you can charge your iPhone on the go? 🙂

  93. Daniel Chieh says

Ray Kurzweil developed modern OCR. You experience what a transhumanist has invented every time you touch a modern ATM. Andrew Ng also is a huge contributor to the Google Brain project, including much of modern machine learning.

Although not quite the same thing as transhumanism, quite a bit of fitness science originated from “bro science” as well, some which was validated later on.

  94. Mr. Hack says

For many male connoisseurs of female body shapes and functions, bigger boobs have always held a sacrosanct position.

Me, on the other hand, a lifelong admirer of the female body form have always faithfully adhered to a useful old adage:

Anything over a handful is a waste.

Even if the transhumanists were ever to design a better and less expensive cryonic capsule (the Volkswagen model for the “volk”), I wouldn’t be interested – it’s all just over hyped nonsense.

Give me a wooden box, an Orthodox priest and a good amount of wafting incense, followed by a good luncheon with a bottle or two for my final well wishers, and I’ll be quite satisfied. 🙂

  96. Apparently if you have fire extinguisher ready, not much. Synthetic skin is also making considerable progress as i understand.

You and Mr. Hack talk about cryonics, but i think it is less interesting area of research and may not be very popular in general public.

Regardless of whether people call themselves transhumanists or not, as long as the following technology gets developed, im happy.

    1. Artificial wombs. We need to decouple reproduction from female breeding habits. Childbirth is also very stressful and potentially dangerous for women. Women’s health matters.
    2. Radiation resistance, bone mass growth (or at least loss prevention), and immune system improvement.

    3. Organ regeneration, tumor growth control, or superior electromechanical augmentation.

    4. Intelligence augmentation, either genetic or electromechanical, ideally both. Perhaps a long shot, but would be nice to see in designer babies.

If those get done by people calling themselves “not-transhumanists”, i would still be happy. I think most of those are possible in the near future, with the exception of intelligence.

  97. Mr. Hack says

If not intelligence per se, but keeping what you already have working at optimum condition even as you age, a lot depends on how good your blood flows to your brain. Of course good blood flow is necessary for all of the organs of your body to operate optimally. There’s been a lot of research done on the efficacy of L-Carnitine (for the heart) and Acetyl L-Carnitine(for the brain) + Ubiquinol that points to positive results. With little to no downside, and relatively low daily costs, what’s there not to like? I’ve been using these supplements for several years, and nearing retirement age, & feel great.

  98. another anon says

You and Mr. Hack talk about cryonics, but i think it is less interesting area of research and may not be very popular in general public.

Yea, cryonics is complete failure. After 55 years, it is going nowhere at all.

    https://timelines.issarice.com/images/b/bb/Number_of_members_2019-01.png

This is shame – this idea had great potential.
The main mistake was targeting the wrong audience.
Cryonics is being sold mainly to computer geek and nerd types.
These people do not have much money and are not prestigious at all.
Cryonic business shall target Hollywood celebrities and oligarchs with big piles of money and even bigger egos.

“Sir, you are very succesful man. You have everything – big houses, big cars, private plane, private yacht, but there is something you do not have! ETERNAL LIFE!”
“No, I do not want to preach to you! Call back the bodyguards, we are not a religion, we are business!
Our offer of eternal life is 100% scientific.”
“Yes, really! You can live forever only for $100,000, mere pocket change for someone like you.
You spent more for new Lamborghini for your dog, why not pay for chance to LIVE FOREVER?”
“Yes it is really so cheap! Of course, if you pay more, your cryogenic tank where you will wait for resurrection could be made of gold and decorated with diamonds, as fitting for such VIP like you!”

Regardless of whether people call themselves transhumanists or not, as long as the following technology gets developed, im happy.

Then, the best way to speed up trashumanism would be to abolish and dissolve the transhumanist movement. They do no research, no science, no engineering of any value.
Only thing they are good for is discrediting actual science with cryonics and other failed scams, and retarded stuff like this.

  99. A question must be posed: why do the powers that be destroy their own instruments (western countries)? It seems impossible for elites that run the West not to know the score when it comes to race and intelligence. The Western countries are.their home market and cannon fodder for world politics. It is an instrument, a valuable one, fully controlled. How will a broken US and EU (broken by continual civil unrest caused by mass immigration, blank state egalitarianism, PC culture) be able to stand up to China? How will the elites that run the West be able to contain China if their countries (instruments of containment) will be destroyed? Why do they destroy their own instrument? How will they make world politics with broken instruments? How will Israel fare without western protection, and how can the West protect it if it is destroyed day by day? I would be grateful if someone could enlighten me on this ( I reject a priori the theses that the elites are fellow blank slatists, just like their servants in academia and civil society; those who run the whole show cant be stupid, otherwise they would not run it).

  100. Considering just explicit devotees of the Machine God:

    • Ray Kurzweil is a prolific inventor.
    • Aubrey de Grey, apart from his theoretical work on ageing, has proven a mathematical theorem. So, definitely not a dunce.

    • Marvin Minsky, accomplished computer scientist.

    • Randal Koene, who I am acquainted with, plays a major scientific role in Elon Musk’s Neuralink.

    • Practical business accomplishments: Thiel (Paypal and other things), Jaan Tallinn (Skype).

This, again, is just off the top of my head.
